Autobiographical notes

The file contains manuscript drafts of miscellaneous autobiographical writings which appear to have been written at different times for different purposes, with also two complete typescript biographical notes (ff. 40-42) dated June 1950 and October 1953.

Autobiography for Jim Ede

The file contains typescript autobiographical notes written by David Jones at the request of Jim Ede in 1935, which are dated 5 September 1935 at Rock, Northumberland. There are four different versions, and also carbon copies or photostats of these with manuscript annotations. Folios 1-8 is the earliest typescript with many corrections by David Jones, some dated 1966. There are notes by Harman Grisewood on the different versions.

The file comprises letters to David Jones from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, New York, relating to the Russell Loines memorial fund awarded for The Anathemata, 1954, with a draft copy of his response; a letter from Henry Rago, of 'Poetry' relating to the Harriet Monroe Memorial Prize, 1956, and letters relating to the Gold Medal award in fine arts at the National Eisteddfod, 1964 with draft replies.

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink and pencil, numbered pages 9 (f-g, l-t) in red by David Jones. These pages correspond to pages 66-68, 73-75, 77-82 of The Anathemata, which are missing in A6.

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink, numbered pages 9 (a-v) in red by David Jones. These pages correspond to pages 61-82 of The Anathemata, which are missing in A6. From this was typed '9A-9 Omega' of the typescript, therefore it must have been written after the first typescript had been made.

AZ

The file comprises a manuscript in black ink and pencil with some typed sheets, numbered pages 24, 25 (a-k) and 28 by David Jones. These pages correspond to pages 97-113 of The Anathemata, which are missing in A6. The typescript sheets have been typed on a machine other than either of the two used in making the typescript text of The Anathemata, perhaps by David Jones himself. At some time subsequent to his receiving the typescript of A6 David Jones set about revising and expanding the material on pages 24, 25, 26 and 28.

Ballad and fragments

The file comprises three manuscript items, not in David Jones's hand, comprising a fragment of Latin prose (possibly an extract from the vita of a saint), a ballad 'The Unquiret [sic] Grave' (see F. J. Child, The English and Scottish Popular Ballad, part III (Cambridge, Mass., 1885), pp. 234-8) and what appear to be notes for a lecture entitled 'David Jones, Himself at the Cave-Mouth (cf. William Blisset, 'David Jones : Himself at the Cave-Mouth', University of Toronto Quarterly, vol. XXXVI (1966-7), pp. 259-273).
