Black folder

The file comprises a black folder which David Jones used when he was writing The Anathemata. The folder now contains a miscellany of manuscript drafts, including pages numbered 46H, 62, 2 (dated 1941), 46B, 44, 96, 4, 21E, 16, 50, 10, 59A, 126C, 126F, 7A and 3D. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood (f. 1).

The file comprises a black folder which David Jones used when he was writing The Anathemata, entitled 'AN C text for revision and incorp[orate]'. The folder now contains a miscellany of manuscript drafts, including wrappers entitled 'Green folder A', 'Manuscript B', and 'Manuscript C'. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood on David Jones' use of the folder, and a note by Daniel Huws, NLW, on the original contents of the folder (ff. 1-2).

Bollingen foundation

The file comprises papers relating to payments to David Jones from the Bollingen foundation, including a copy of a letter from Stephen Spender, 1959, backing his application, copies of letters from Sir Herbert Read, 1962, and T. S. Eliot, 1963, to support remission of income tax, and a few letters from Ethel Watts, David Jones' accountant. Documents arising from an appeal against a tax payment include a copy of the Bollinger application form with information provided by David Jones about his own personal history, academic background, membership of societies, awards received, and a description of his intended project.

The file comprises letters to David Jones, from Alfred Longden, Lilian Somerville, Peter Orr and others from the British Council relating to exhibitions at the Tate Gallery and Paris (1945), Prague, (1946), Buffalo, USA (1946), Paris (1946), Cairo (1946), Europe (1947), South Africa (1947), Paris (1949), Brooklyn (1952), and also relating to an exhibition on 'painting since 1939' (1947), to a facsimile of 'Chapel in the park' and to sound recordings, 1964-1965.

The file contains the first typescript sheet of 'The Fatigue' of what became the duplicated copy from which David Jones read 'The Fatigue' on 10 March 1965 for the BBC Third Programme produced by Douglas Cleverdon.

The file contains typescript text of 'The Fatigue'. This text was originally a broadcast script (for another copy of this script see LS4/7), but it has been corrected by David Jones and prepared by him for use as printer's copy. The poem 'Gwanwyn yn y Llwyn' has been added by him in manuscript. This appears to be the text printed by Will and Sebastian Carter in 1965. David Jones has dated his alterations 'Sep. 13th'.

The file comprises material relating to a broadcast of The Anathemata by the BBC in 1953 and 1954, produced by Douglas Cleverdon: a letter from Douglas Cleverdon to David Jones about the broadcast of The Anathemata, dated March 1953, with a printed notice of the BBC Third programme Coronation week schedule (ff. 1-2); manuscript notes by David Jones for Douglas Cleverdon on a proposed broadcast version of parts of The Anathemata (ff. 3-9, 10-31); and an insertion to the broadcast script recorded 17 Nov 1954 with a letter, dated 18 Nov 1954, from Douglas Cleverdon explaining the changes (fols. 32-40).

The file contains a script of a reading by David Jones (introduced by Aneirin Talfan Davies) of 'Two Fragments of a Work in Progress' ('The Wall' and 'The Tutelar of the Place') recorded by the BBC on 9 November 1956, and broadcast on 18 December 1956. There is also a letter from Aneirin Talfan Davies and a newspaper cutting relating to the broadcast.

The file comprises two scripts of a reading by David Jones of 'The Hunt' recorded by the BBC on 8 March 1958. Both scripts have been corrected and one has what appears to be instructions by David Jones to a printer.

It includes a script of the introduction by David Jones and some marginal notes by him, and a draft billing slip. The cast list includes Dylan Thomas as Pte. Dai Evans.
