Nik Alderson letters

Original bundle of letters from Raymond 'Nik' Alderson to Geoffrey Woolley, 19 Jan. 1939-3 May 1941. Many of the letters are undated, or with the date Woolley noted on them. Raymond Alderson was a lieutenant in the Friends' Ambulance Unit, attached to the 1st Div. Free French Forces, when he was killed at Tobruk, Libya, 14 Feb. 1942, having served in Syrian and the Western Desert. The letters include an appreciation by Ian Scott-Kilvert, copies of letters of condolence to his parents, and letters from 'Sandy' to Woolley, usually on Friends' Ambulance Unit paper and usually only dated with month and date, but including 18 Dec. 1941-17 Aug. 1947.

Newspaper cuttings on subjects of interest to Woolley, including athletics reports, Nov. 1936; James Thurber on contemporary writers in the current atmosphere of distrust, 1952; Robert Yoakum comparing the letters pages of the Times and the New York Times, 1971; and Neil Sinclair (Spectator), Ray Connolly (Sunday Times), Ann Jones (South Wales Argus) and William Rees-Mogg (Times) on Woolley, 1976, 1980 (x2) and 2005 respectively. Also articles by Woolley, including 'I mock a whim on the mystery dunes of Kenfig', Western Mail, May 1939.

Myfanwy Thomas letters

Original bundle of letters and cards from Myfanwy Thomas, usually from Eastbury, co. Berks., to Geoffrey Woolley, 29 Nov. 1968-12 Dec. 1995, including asking about the W. H. Hudson letters (C 1, above) (4 Oct. 1981), of which Myfanwy later typed copies (22 March 1983); also news of Cherry Watson (d. 27 Jan. 1986), widow of Rowland L. Watson ('Watty', d. 15 Nov. 1968). Includes at least two letters from Watty (12 and 19 April 1967), one card from Cherry Watson (20 June 1981), and papers of the Edward and Helen Thomas Memorial Fund and the Edward Thomas Centenary Memorial Fund.

Miscellaneous writings

Manuscript and typescript prose, including a draft play, 'The guest of the absolute', [n.d.] (32 pp.), and an essay, 'A choice of books', about the books taken into active service, [n.d.] (4 pp.). Also a reporter's notebook, mainly relating to speeches by US politicians, 1937-1940.

Original bundle of letters, and two cards, from Jean-Claude Gardin, 1 Feb. 1948-29 Dec. 1965, mainly 1948-1954, although many of the letters are incompletely dated. At least one of the letters was written from Beirut, and his address in Sept. 1953 was Villa Racurie, 76 rue de Sèvres, Paris 7.

K. Marshall, Sept. 1939-Nov.1942. The letters include several replies to letters of condolence from Woolley. Also a letter from Jack Jones of Rhiwbina, discussing his 'The man David' and 'Me and mine', "my publisher thinks it is a better book than my 'Unfinished journey' and he is going to publish it as soon as paper supplies will enable him to", and the state of Welsh theatre, "moribund ... London's dead donkeys follow each other on to the stage", Oct. 1944. Also some other papers, including a report on the occupation of installations NE of Leese [Kampfstoffabrik Leese chemical manufacturing plant], April 1945. This file mostly comprises a bundle originally labelled 'Wartime letters', although it also included some dating to his school and university days.

Memorandum book

Loose leaf binder containing lists of contents, recipients and receipts for CARE and other food parcels ordered in the USA by Geoffrey Woolley, April-Aug. 1948, a copy of Woolley's will, Nov. 1944, list of bequests, Aug. 1948, diary entries, copies of letters received and sent, accounts, and lists of names [?letters received and to be answered]. The diary entries include Pershing's lying-in-state, 18 July.

Log of Jamboree

Diary entries entitled 'Log of Jamboree, August 1933', describing a visit to London, including "Got to Marble Arch. Anti-War demonstration. Something vast. A. Bevan M.P., Tom Mann, Beverley Nichols, etc. speaking. Colossal procession. Queer speciments of humanity. Bought programme (3d.). Movietone Van in attendance" (30 July); boat crossing Dover-Ostend; train journey to Kőln, Germany, including meeting Arthur Short, assistant commissioner for Wales, "an amazing meeting - 1/3000 chance! Talking to Nazis - ever so nice" (31 July). The journey was probably to the 4th World Scout Jamboree at Gödöllő, Hungary, 2-13 Aug. 1933.

Letters from Robert Moore

Original bundle of letters from Robert Moore, 11 June 1951-1956. The writer only dates the letters, when dated at all, with the day of the week; the only dates are those on postmarks, or Woolley's note of receiving a letter. Also a letter from Woolley to Peter Storrs, that if he die Robert Moore is to have all his possessions 'here', and any credit at Riggs Bank.
