Copies, in the hand of Betha Johnes, of over two hundred letters, dated 1867-74, from Bishop Connop Thirlwall to herself. They are prepared for publication and accompanied by indexes, corrections, a memoir and a dedication. The letters, edited by A.P. Stanley, were first published in 1881. A new edition, published by Bentley & Son, appeared in 1882 in a volume entitled Letters to a Friend. At the same time, another volume of letters from Thirlwall, entitled Letters, Literary & Theological, was published by Daldy, and edited by Dr Perowne and Louis Stokes. There was some discussion as to whether both these volumes should have appeared conjointly. The original letters are in the Thirlwall Collection, deposited at NLW, and described in NLW Annual Report 1971-2, p.84. This collection also contains replies from Miss Johnes. Several of the letters described in this schedule of Dolaucothy correspondence are about the Bishop's letters and their publication.
