Letter from Shuja al-Daulah Safdarjang to Clive.

In my previous letters I gave you an account of the troubles created in this area by the wretched Qasim with the instigation of the Rohillas. I also sent you letters of Hafiz Rahmat Khan and Mukarram Khan which would have given you further details of the troubles created by him. As he regards my English friends and I as one and the same thing he is planning to invade Bengal after he has taken over this area.

Letter from Shuja al-Daulah, Safdarjang to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter of the 12th of Rabi al-Avval, delivered to me by Captain Dokaral [Douglas?] on the 28th of Rabi al-Avval, regreting the delay in my arrival in Allahabad and also informing me that you are intending to return to England; perhaps you would consider delaying your departure. As the company officials had appointed you to lead all the expeditions we are wondering who will be appointed to replace you. If it is Colonel Barker who takes over we know that he would come to my help whenever I need him. General Carnic John Bahadur [Carnac] is leaving as well but he would also be able to come to my resecue if I needed him. -- I have already replied to you about some of the issues mentioned in your letter. The delay in reaching Allahabad was because of a physical condition and I was unable to undertake this journey.

I am sure you are very well acquainted with the true character of Khadim Husain Khan. For reasons which are connected with you it is advisable that he comes to Murshidabad. As you will soon be travelling from Murshidabad towards this side it may be a good idea that he come and see you when you are staying near Bhagalpur and Kundiyah. Navab Nasir al-Mulk and Amir Beg Khan should also be briefed about this meeting. Please let me know if you agree with these proposals.

Letter from Shuja al-Mulk Bahadur to Clive.

Thank you very much for your letter informing me that your vakil, Shaikh Muhammad Anis, will be staying at Calcutta to attend to certain important tasks and that you have appointed Bhayyah Ram in his place and that all business with the Company should be referred to Mr Hastings for approval. Bhayyah Ram is known to us and we will contact him when he is needed.

Letter from Shuja al-Mulk to Clive.

I reached here on the 14th of Rabi al-Avval and found that Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur was ready to march towards Calcutta. When I asked him the purpose of his visit he replied that he was coming to see you. I am therefore warning you of his impending visit. I advised him that if he was coming to pay a courtesy visit he would be most welcome to do so hundreds of time but not if he was marching to admonish the Dutch. Earlier I had offered to negotiate between the two and had assured him that whatever was agreed would also be acceptable to you. In order to achieve this I came to Hoogli and after settling the affairs and after giving him a Khillat I had sent the details of our negotiations to Mr Hastings. I had also sent him the same information verbally. I am sure that he would have, by now, informed you about this. I am not sure in what way the Dutch have broken their pledges now that he has decided to march with his army. He has not informed me of any such acts by them. If he does not have the intention of conducting a war why is marching from Hoogli?

Letter from Siraj al-Daulah to Clive.

I had appointed Shaikh Amar Allah to the post of Faujdari at Chaklah Hoogli but I now realise that he would not be able to perform his duties without the assistance of Fakhr al-tajjar. I am therefore sending him there and advise you that all relevant cases should now be referred to him at that place. I hope this will not interfere in the affairs of the company.
