Inventories and catalogues,

Various inventories and catalogues, comprising an inventory of household goods at Wynnstay and Llangedwyn, 1749; catalogue of plans and elevations at Wynnstay [c. 1789]; inventory of Wynnstay theatre [1789]; inventory of household furniture and linen at Wynnstay, 1790-1810; London cellar book, 1836-1839, catalogue of the Sandby exhibition at Nottingham, 1884; and Wynnstay cellar book, 1924-1946.

Indexes to vouchers

From 1889 onwards, the vouchers are bound according to the estate, i.e. Home, Wynnstay, Glan-llyn, Llanbryn-mair, Llangedwyn, Llanforda, Llwydiarth. The indexes to vouchers after 1889 are likewise bound according to the estate. Thus, for example, VIF1 (1890) is an index to the Llanforda Estate Vouchers V54 (1890). Each index is arranged alphabetically according to the name on the voucher to whom payment is made, together with the number of the page on which the voucher is to be found in the appropriate bound volume of vouchers.

Illegible documents and fragments,

Fragments of documents relating to Caernarfonshire, 1589-[19th cent.]; illegible documents, 1641 (other dates illegible); old wrappers, [c. 1673]-[c. 1789]; and seals, [16th-17th cent].

Household and tour account books,

Household account books of Wynnstay and the London town houses occupied by the Williams Wynn family, eleven in total. Nine of them contain accounts compiled by Samuel Sidebotham, steward to the fourth baronet, 1768-1777; the tenth appears in a different hand, 1779-1781, and the eleventh is of later date, 1843-1857. The first volume records the expenses of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s grand tour through France and Italy, 1768-1769; the second includes the expenses of Sir Watkin Williams’ Wynn’s coming of age party, 1770; the next seven volumes contain general household accounts, systematically organised into sections for sundry disbursements, pictures, Master Williams Wynn, charities, music, house rent, taxes and repairs, cellar, stable, servants’ livery, servants’ bills and travelling expenses, servant’s wages, housekeeper, kitchens, cash receipts and balance. From 1775, the house in St James’s Square is added and there are other variations in the tenth volume; the eleventh volume has a different layout. These account books reveal the fourth baronet’s interests and lavish lifestyle, listing payments to artists, craftsmen, entertainments, musicians, societies, and charities. The sundry disbursements include monuments and a font for Ruabon church. Recurrent payments to individuals include the artist Paul Sandby, 1770-1773, sculptor Joseph Nollekens, 1772-1774, various music sellers, the musicians Charles Linton, 1771-1773, David Parry, 1770-1777, [Richard] Hay, 1773-1780, and [Stephen] Paxton, 1770-1777, Jeremiah and William Parkinson, 1774-1780, theatre scene painter George Wilkinson, 1774-1777, potters Wedgwood and Bentley, 1771-1775, and others.

Hope and Mold, title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in the parishes of Hope and Mold, with files for Argoed, 1568-1580; Mold, 1584; and Bryn y Mynyll, Erow Tu ar Rhyd and Erow yn Rhyd y Deved in Hersedd and Hope Owen, 1626-1707.

Hirnant, title deeds,

Title deeds of properties in the parish of Hirnant, Montgomeryshire, and the township of Trefedw, usually called Cwm y Vedw in the original deeds. Most of them were acquisitions of the Vaughan family of Llangedwyn and Llwydiarth and Sir William Williams of Glascoed in the seventeenth century, augmented by purchases by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn between 1811 and 1831. The files describe miscellaneous properties in Trefedw, 1531-1732, 1811; miscellaneous properties in Hirnant, 1573-1734; Cae yr Braich, Werglodd y Dyar y Ty, etc., Trefedw, 1598-1687; Tyddyn y Ty Croes and a sheepwalk, Hirnant, 1617-1637, 1711; Llwyn Pale Bychan and Y Rhos Gough Leia, Trefedw, 1635-1638; ffriths in Kefn Hir y Mynydd, Trefedw, 1667-1687; Ty’n y Celyn and Cae David Bevan, 1759-1828; and Nant y Brithell, Hirnant, 1789-1831.

Gwydir estate

The Gwydir estate proper did not become part of the Wynnstay estate, but passed to the Dukes of Ancaster through the marriage of Robert, Lord Willoughby of Eresby, duke of Ancaster, and Mary, sole daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Wynn, 4th bart (dec. 1674). However, a rental for 1680 of the Gwydir estate and two rentals for 1671 of Gwydir property in co. Mer. are found amongst the general rentals of the Wynnstay estate. The rentals comprise property in p's [Aber] (t. Y Wig), Betws-y-coed and Llandudno, co. Caern; p's Llanrwst, Llanddoged, Gwytherin, Llanfair Talhaearn, Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch and Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, co. Denb.; p's Llangar, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Gwyddelwern, Llanfor and Llandderfel, co. Mer.; and p's Isleworth, Heston, co. Mddx. L1311 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel and Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, co. Mer. R4/6 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel, Gwyddelwern, Llangar and Llanfor, co. Mer. Glasinfryn and Gwydir estates

The Glasinfryn estate comprised property in p's Llanfechell and [Llangwyllog] (hamlet of Tresgawen), co. Ang, and in p's Conwy (t. Y Gyffin), Treflys, Pwllheli, Clynnog and Llanberis, co. Caern. R8/1 (1678) and R8/6 (1680) contain the Glasinfryn estate only. From 1683 (L1301) it is combined with property which formed part of the Gwydir estate, in p's [Waunfawr formerly Llanbeblig] (t. Treflan), Llanfair-is-gaer, Llandeiniolen, Llanrug and Bangor, and Caernarfon town, all co. Caern, p. Llysfaen in co. Denb., and p. Llanfrothen in co. Mer. From 1691 (R8/9) property in [p. Conway] (t. Y Gyffin) purchased from William Robinson, esq. is added. From 1684 (L1301) to 1737 (R24/6) one property in Ruthin is added. From 1697 (R9/6a) property in co. Ang. is omitted. In 1741 (R26/1) p. Llanfrothen is transferred to the manor of Valle Crucis collection. Glascoed, Llanforda and Plas-y-ward estates B/1-3

From 1739 (R 24/15) the collection is divided into three: B1: property in cos Denb. and Mont., and p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch), co. Mer. B2: property in co. Mer. except p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch). B3: property in co. Caern. Division B was re-organised in 1772 as follows: property in co. Denb., in Collection IV; property in co. Mer. in collection I; property in co. Mont. in Collections I and III; and property in co. Caern., in Collection V.

From 1716 onwards the combined collections of Glascoed, Llanforda, and Plas-y-ward are divided into two, A and B. Collection A comprises property in co. Denb.: p's Llansilin (t's Sycharth, Rhiwlas), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Trefeilw, Banhadla, Tre-wern, Henfachau, Prys, Gartheryr), Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, (Maen Gwynedd), [Glyntraean] (t. Hafodgynfor), Llangollen (t. Glascoed and Llanforda estates

The Glascoed estate was acquired by Sir William Williams (d. 1700) through his marriage with Margaret, daughter and coheiress of Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed, and the Llanforda estate was purchased by Sir William from Edward Lloyd of Llanforda in 1676. They comprise property in p's Llansilin (t's Moelfre, Bodlith, Priddbwll, Lloran, Sycharth, Lledrod, Estynallan, Rhiwlas), Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, [Llangadwaladr] (t. Tregeiriog), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Henfachau, Prys Fechan), [Glyntraean formerly part of Llangollen] (t's Grogeniddon, Hafodgynfor), [Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog] (t. Llywarch), [Llangollen] (t. RA6 (? early 17th cent) contains only property in Shropshire: p's [Llansilin] (t. Sychdyn), [Oswestry] (t's Llanforda, Pentre-gaer, Cynhinion). From RA13 (1702) onwards property in cos Mont. and Mer. is resumed. Collector: Matthew Jones ?1700-15. From R12-R13 (1704-15) onwards the Glascoed and Llanforda Collections are combined with the Plas-y-ward Collection. From 1704 onwards, property in p's [Llandderfel] (t. Betws-y-coed, Nanffreuar), [Llanycil] (t. Streflyn) is added.

Glan-llyn estate

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1749) acquired the Glan-llyn estate with the Llwydiarth estate. The estate comprised property in p's Llanuwchllyn (t's Penaran, Cynllwyd, Pennant-lliw, Tre Castell), Llanycil (Bala Town, t. Streflyn), Llangywer, Llanfor, Llandderfel and Corwen, all co. Mer. From R26/6 (1741?), property in [p. Llanuwchllyn] (Caergai) is added, and between 1744 and 1748 (R27/9-R29/6) and in 1750 (R30/5) the chief rents of the manor of Pennant-lliw are also included. Collectors: David Morgan, 1626, John Evans, 1701-1706 and 1714-1728, Randle Jones, 1736-1751, and Thomas Jones 1752-1772. After 1772, this collection continues in Collection I.

Glan-llyn estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llandderfel, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (including t. Branas), Llanfor, Gwyddelwern, Bettws Gwerfil-Goch, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llanymawddwy, Mallwyd (transferred to the Cyfeiliog estate), Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfrothen and Llanfachreth, all in co. Mer., and in p's Penmachno, Clynnog and Llanbeblig (including properties in Caernarfon), co. Caern. This collection also contains the chief rents for some of the above parishes, including Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel, Llanbeblig and Trawsfynydd; also, a statement of account of almshouses in Llanuwchllyn, R79-R121; election expenses in co. Mont. (1830s); and details of boats (and their owners) on Bala Lake; R83/7e (1828) contains a rental of estates had in exchange from Viscount Clive, consisting of property in p's Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont. By 1861, some of the above-named places have been gradually omitted from this collection, and only the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llandderfel, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfor, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau; and from R118/2 to R135/1i chief rents are contained for the following parishes in co. Mer. only: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangower, Llanycil, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau. Collectors: Griffith Richards, 1809-1821, Samuel Hughes, 1824-1834, Pryce Jones, 1835-1839, John Williams, 1839-1864, John Williams (executor of the first named John Williams), 1865-1866, William Jones, 1867-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. R122/1b (1867) contains rents only for p's Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer., while R122/1h (1867) contains chief rents as specified above; R123/1g (1867) and all succeeding volumes contain the chief rents only, while the other rents of the Glan-llyn estate have been transferred (see R123/1a) to the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. By R135/1i (1879), only the chief rents for the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llandrillo. General bills and receipts,

General bills and receipts, comprising clothing bills 1639-1675, followed by files of bills, receipts and occasional correspondence kept by Samuel Sidebotham resulting from the routine domestic management, landscaping and extravagant personal expenditure of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 4th Baronet. Recurrent expenses include travelling and accommodation, labour, taxes, insurance, ground rent and public services in London, works of art, fabrics, foodstuffs, drink, clothing, jewellery, silver plate, furnishings, books, plays, and susbcriptions to charities and clubs. Another file concerns exclusively the renovations of the town house in St James’s Square. The contents reflect the baronet’s indulgence of his cultural interests at Wynnstay and in London, and include bills from high-quality artists, craftsmen, musicians and London tradesmen. Fishing and shooting papers
