Leases, tenancy agreements, etc.

Leases, agreements and various other papers relating to tenancies mainly on the Wynnstay estate, comprising a distraint on the tenant of Allt Goch in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1815-1823, miscellaneous leases and agreements, 1842-1892, and a lease to Cefn Mawr and Rhosymedre Gas Company Limited, 1865.

Liverpool Corporation water supply petition and Act

Papers relating to the scheme by Liverpool Corporation to obtain a water supply from the rivers Vyrnwy, Marchnant and Conwy in Montgomeryshire, and the effect of the scheme on the estates of Llwydiarth and Llanforda belonging to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn of Wynnstay, 1880-1893. They comprise a petition against the bill, amendments to the Act of Parliament, together with relevant maps and correspondence.

Settled Land Acts estate improvement applications

Papers relating to applications between 1887 and 1905 by Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams Wynn, Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn and the trustees of the Wynnstay settlement of 1884, under the provisions of the Settled Land Acts, 1882-1890, for improvements on the Glan-llyn estate in the parish of Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth, Llwynymaen and Llanforda near Oswestry, Salop, the Llangedwyn estate in Llansilin, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Denbighshire, the Llanbryn-mair and Cyfeiliog estate, Montgomeryshire, and parts of the main Wynnstay estate in Bangor Is-coed and Wrexham. Typically the file contents comprise official application forms for the approval by the Board of Agriculture of a surveyor or engineer nominated by the Wynnstay trustees, orders issued by the High Court of Justice Chancery Division, building estimates, specifications, surveyors’ reports and certificates, accounts, agents’ receipts and relevant correspondence. Some files contain plans and elevations.

Loose letters and associated Wynnstay papers

Loose letters and other associated papers accumulated by the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1777-1948. The letters, mostly incoming, are from the Wynnstay estate agents, other solicitors, land agents and valuers, vendors and purchasers, tenants, members of the Williams Wynn family and the trustees. The contents reflect the routine work of the solicitors’ practice, referring to Wynnstay estate sales and purchases; property leases; mining and mineral rights; financial management under the Wynnstay family trusts; and sporting rights. Some files relate to particular topics such as Rhosllanerchrugog coal mines, 1785, 1859-1879; the sale of the manor of Stanwardine and purchase of Plas Ucha, 1805-1818; West Wye Valley Mine, etc. 1858-1914; crown rents, 1860-1881; the life policy of Sarah Sealy, 1868; clay extraction at Gwersyllt 1883-1884; letters of W.W. Wynne to Rev. George Williams, 1901; and the estate of Arthur Watkin Williams Wynn, deceased, 1948.

Papers relating to Wynnstay lawsuits

Papers from the office of Longueville and Co., drawn up in the preparation of lawsuits mainly involving members of the Williams Wynn family of Wynnstay, [c. 1817]-1904. The most substantial of these is a case brought by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn against Robert Edwards of Gronwen, Oswestry, and Thomas Roberts, concerning trespass and a dispute over land at Moelfre Pool in the manor of Cynllaith Owain, 1883-1884. Others include an alleged case of trepass by Richard Tyrwhitt on lands in Llansanffraid Glynceiriog and Llandysilio, Denbighshire, [c. 1817]-1820; the recovery of royalties from William Farr of Plas Llysyn, Montgomeryshire, 1833-1839; possession of a cottage at Commins Coch, Cemais, Montgomeryshire, 1873-1878; and several separate cases relating to tenancy and arrears of rent, 1874-1904. The files typically include cases and counsels’ opinions, notices, the complaint or statement of claim, court summons, affidavits, court orders, attorneys’ bills of costs, correspondence, counterparts and copies of relevant deeds, and maps and plans.

Collection IV

From 1783 onwards, Collection IV is divided into three as follows: (1) Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward A and B, Denbighshire; Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward B, Denbighshire; Lordship of Cynllaith Owain chief rents; and Llwydiarth estate (Llangedwyn collection); (2) Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward A, Shropshire; and (3) Manor of Much Wenlock.

Manor of Cyfeiliog: Mathafarn estate, Rhiwsaeson estate and Tirymynych estate

The Manor of Cyfeiliog collection comprises the following: (i) Mathafarn estate, comprising property in p's Llanwrin, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Mallwyd, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Cemais, all in co. Mont.; (ii) Rhiwsaeson estate, comprising property in p's Llanbryn-mair, Darowen and Llanwrin, co. Mont.;. (Iii) Tirymynych estate, comprising property in p's Penegoes, Machynlleth, Llanbryn-mair, Cemais and Llanwrin, co. Mont. Collectors: Rice Hughes, 1772, Francis Chambre, 1773-1790, and Rev. John Davies 1790-1809. For details of this collection after 1809, see Manor of Cyfeiliog rents.

Arwystli chief rents

Property on the Berthlwyd estate (p's Llanidloes and Llandinam), and in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam, Carno, Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, all in co. Mont. Also cottage rents in p's Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llandinam and Penystrywaid up to 1828 (see also the Arwystli collection). Collectors: From 1808, the same as the Arwystli collection [William Jones, 1808-1816, William Johnes, 1817-1836, David Jones, 1837-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes 1871]. Glan-llyn estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llandderfel, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (including t. Branas), Llanfor, Gwyddelwern, Bettws Gwerfil-Goch, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llanymawddwy, Mallwyd (transferred to the Cyfeiliog estate), Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfrothen and Llanfachreth, all in co. Mer., and in p's Penmachno, Clynnog and Llanbeblig (including properties in Caernarfon), co. Caern. This collection also contains the chief rents for some of the above parishes, including Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel, Llanbeblig and Trawsfynydd; also, a statement of account of almshouses in Llanuwchllyn, R79-R121; election expenses in co. Mont. (1830s); and details of boats (and their owners) on Bala Lake; R83/7e (1828) contains a rental of estates had in exchange from Viscount Clive, consisting of property in p's Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont. By 1861, some of the above-named places have been gradually omitted from this collection, and only the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llandderfel, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfor, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau; and from R118/2 to R135/1i chief rents are contained for the following parishes in co. Mer. only: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangower, Llanycil, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau. Collectors: Griffith Richards, 1809-1821, Samuel Hughes, 1824-1834, Pryce Jones, 1835-1839, John Williams, 1839-1864, John Williams (executor of the first named John Williams), 1865-1866, William Jones, 1867-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. R122/1b (1867) contains rents only for p's Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer., while R122/1h (1867) contains chief rents as specified above; R123/1g (1867) and all succeeding volumes contain the chief rents only, while the other rents of the Glan-llyn estate have been transferred (see R123/1a) to the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. By R135/1i (1879), only the chief rents for the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llandrillo. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents

The chief rents are on property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair and Machynlleth (including t's Isygarreg and Uwchygarreg), all in co. Mont. Most of the chief rents were collected at Michaelmas (the date of collection is not always given in the rentals), so that R32/2 contains rents due at Michaelmas 1754, not Lady Day 1754. The collectors are not named.

Lordship of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The collection comprises property in p's Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas) and [Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog] (t. Llywarch), all in co. Denb. Collectors: John Humphreys, 1719, Peter Lloyd, 1725-1726, Randle Jones, 1736-1738, and Thomas Jones, 1739-1772. For the continuation of this collection post-1772, see Collection IV.

Purchased estate (1768)

The estate comprises property in p's Ruabon, Llangedwyn, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llansilin and Wrexham, co. Denb, in p's Llangurig, Llanbryn-mair and Pennant, co. Mont., and in p's Llanuwchllyn and Llandderfel, co. Mer. Collector: Thomas Jones, 1768-1772. For the continuation of this estate post-1772, see Collections I and II.

'Rental, freehold property'

A single, separate volume containing a rental which includes tenants from the following places: p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Erbistock, Gwersyllt, Marchwiail, Bryneglwys, Holt, Llandysilio[-yn-Iâl] and Llanarmon [-yn-Iâl], co. Denb., and p's Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint. Collectors: D. Parry, 1813, and E. Pickering 1814-1821.

Farm and cottage rents

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 6th bart, died on 9 May 1885, and from 1885 (R141/1a) onwards, the properties in the preceding series are arranged as follows: (i) The estates of which Lady Williams Wynn is seised for life with remainder in tail male, consisting of property in Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Bangor Is-coed, Tilston, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llansilin, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant [i.e. Llangedwyn estate]. (ii) The estates of which Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams-Wynn is seised for life with remainder in tail male, consisting of property in Erbistock, Bangor Is-coed, Ruabon, Wrexham, Gresford, Marchwiail, Overton, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanfwrog, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanynys, Ruthin, Llanhychan, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanfyllin, Hirnant, Pennant, Llanwddyn, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl, Garthbeibio, Cemais, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Carno, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes, Llangurig, Llanbadarn, and the Glan-llyn estate, consisting of property in Pennal, Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, and details re boats on Bala lake [i.e. Wynnstay and Ruthin estate, Llwydiarth estate, Cyfeiliog/Llanbryn-mair estate, and the Glan-llyn estate]. From 1890 (R145/1a) onwards, property in p. Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, co. Card., is included. The rentals for 1897 and 1898 (R152/1a and R153/1a) contain only the estates of which Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams is seised for life with remainder in tail male, together with property in p. Llangollen, co. Denb.

Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents collection comprises property in p. Llansilin, co. Denb., including t's Llansilin, Lloran, Moelfre, Estynllan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas and Bodlith. From R64 to R92, 1808-1835, some cottage and enclosure rents are included with the chief rents, but chief rents only appear in the rentals from R94 to R151, 1837-1896. The rents are collected at Michaelmas, not Lady Day. Collectors: Samuel Lovett, 1808-1835, John Croxon, 1841-1842, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. Glasinfryn and Gwydir estates

The Glasinfryn estate comprised property in p's Llanfechell and [Llangwyllog] (hamlet of Tresgawen), co. Ang, and in p's Conwy (t. Y Gyffin), Treflys, Pwllheli, Clynnog and Llanberis, co. Caern. R8/1 (1678) and R8/6 (1680) contain the Glasinfryn estate only. From 1683 (L1301) it is combined with property which formed part of the Gwydir estate, in p's [Waunfawr formerly Llanbeblig] (t. Treflan), Llanfair-is-gaer, Llandeiniolen, Llanrug and Bangor, and Caernarfon town, all co. Caern, p. Llysfaen in co. Denb., and p. Llanfrothen in co. Mer. From 1691 (R8/9) property in [p. Conway] (t. Y Gyffin) purchased from William Robinson, esq. is added. From 1684 (L1301) to 1737 (R24/6) one property in Ruthin is added. From 1697 (R9/6a) property in co. Ang. is omitted. In 1741 (R26/1) p. Llanfrothen is transferred to the manor of Valle Crucis collection. Glascoed and Llanforda estates

The Glascoed estate was acquired by Sir William Williams (d. 1700) through his marriage with Margaret, daughter and coheiress of Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed, and the Llanforda estate was purchased by Sir William from Edward Lloyd of Llanforda in 1676. They comprise property in p's Llansilin (t's Moelfre, Bodlith, Priddbwll, Lloran, Sycharth, Lledrod, Estynallan, Rhiwlas), Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, [Llangadwaladr] (t. Tregeiriog), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Henfachau, Prys Fechan), [Glyntraean formerly part of Llangollen] (t's Grogeniddon, Hafodgynfor), [Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog] (t. Llywarch), [Llangollen] (t. Dinbren), [Ruabon] (t. Cristionydd Fechan), Llanynys and Derwen, all co. Denb. The following property has been added at various times:. The Glantant estate in p's Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Trefeilw, Tre-wern, Henfachau, Prys, Gartheryr), [Llangedwyn] (t. Property in Llangynwy (t. Mathrafal) appears only for the years 1690-1. Property in co. Flint is omitted from 1684 onwards. R21/11 (1723) includes 'Dog walks in Hugh Davies Collection'. RA6 (? early 17th cent) contains only property in Shropshire: p's [Llansilin] (t. Sychdyn), [Oswestry] (t's Llanforda, Pentre-gaer, Cynhinion). From RA13 (1702) onwards property in cos Mont. and Mer. is resumed. Collector: Matthew Jones ?1700-15. From R12-R13 (1704-15) onwards the Glascoed and Llanforda Collections are combined with the Plas-y-ward Collection. From 1704 onwards, property in p's [Llandderfel] (t. Betws-y-coed, Nanffreuar), [Llanycil] (t. Streflyn) is added.

Glascoed, Llanforda and Plas-y-ward estates B/1-3

From 1739 (R 24/15) the collection is divided into three: B1: property in cos Denb. and Mont., and p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch), co. Mer. B2: property in co. Mer. except p. Llanymawddwy (t. Cywarch). B3: property in co. Caern. Division B was re-organised in 1772 as follows: property in co. Denb., in Collection IV; property in co. Mer. in collection I; property in co. Mont. in Collections I and III; and property in co. Caern., in Collection V.
