Somerset deeds,

Two mediaeval deeds concerning lands in Wick, Carswell and Wroxhale [Wraxhall] in Somerset. The first [late 12 x early 13 cent] is a grant by the Beket family pertaining to land at Wick, containing specific boundary clauses and details of the payment made partly in money and partly in high-status goods. The second, a quitclaim dated 1307, may be part of a settlement involving families located ‘atte Wike’ and Clopton, relating to lands at Carswell and Wroxhale [Wraxhall].

St Martin’s (Weston Rhyn), title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the township of Weston Rhyn and parish of St Martin’s. Many of the deeds relate to the Trehowell estate of Richard ap Robert, which was sold to Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed in 1656. The files describe Cae Meddyg, Mays Weston, etc., 1456-1597; Tir y Maip, Mays Weston, Bryn Coch, etc., 1601-1613; Gwerglodd Sarne y Cwtta, Gweirglodd y Kay Newydd, etc., 1619-1640; purchase of Trehowell by Watkin Kyffin, 1647-1663; Morton, 1648-1701; and a messuage in Trehowel and Erwe, 1767-1809.

Stanwardine collection

Property in Stanwardine, [p. Baschurch], co. Shrop., and p. Holt, co. Denb. From R10/1 (1707) onwards, property in p's Wrexham and Broughton is added; from R10/9 (1712) onwards, property in p. Is-y-Coed, previously contained in the Wynnstay Home Rents Collection, is also added. R9/6a and R9/6b contain property in Holt only. Collectors: Thomas Hanmer (1707-1709), Allen Pidgeon (1735), Randle Jones (1736-1746 and 1772), and Thomas Jones (1748-1770). For the continuation of this collection post 1772, see Collection II.

Stray bonds,

Bonds, recognizances in the nature of a statute merchant or statute staple, etc. separated from other documents with which they once belonged. They relate mainly to payments of debts, appearances in court, covenants in title deeds or obedience to arbitration awards. A large proportion of them concerns the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward. They are listed as "a bundle of old bonds", 1489-1669; miscellaneous bonds, 1518-1613; bonds for payment, recognizances, etc., 1520-1682; a parcel of "old bonds", 1554-1687; bonds for performance of covenants, 1614-1698; bonds of Sir Richard Wynn and Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, 1619-1638. and bonds for payments for Caernarfonshire rectories, 1624-1631.

Tithe apportionments and other tithe papers, Wynnstay and Vale of Clwyd,

Papers deriving from the ownership and apportionment of tithes concerning the Wynnstay and Vale of Clwyd estate, comprising lists of tithes in the Manor of Valle Crucis, Wrexham, Stansty, etc., [pre-1719]; a tithe apportionment for Llangollen, 1841; tithe apportionment for Erbistock, 1843; tithe apportionment for Erlas, Gresford, (Watermark 1849); table and list of tithe rent charge, Plas Issa and Tatham farms, Ruabon, (Watermark 1859)-1873; and particulars of tithe rent charges due to the owners of Plas Madoc, 1890.

Tithe rentals, co. Mont.

Tithe rents in p. Llangurig (t's Cefn (yr) hafodau, Glyngynwydd, Glynhafren, Glynbrochan, Llanifyny, Llaniwaered), p. Llanidloes (t's Cilmachallt, Brithdir, Treflyn), p. Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Glyntrefnant, Dolgwden, Faerdref), and p. Llanfair Caereinion (t's Rhosaflo, Brynelen, Cil-yr-ych, Rhiwhiriarth, Llanloddian, Bryn-glas, Dol-ged, Llanfair, Gwenynog and Pen-tyrch), all in co. Mont. With regard to the dates in this series, R47/3, for example, would contain a rental for the year 1779 (not necessarily collected in 1779). Collectors: Edward Devereux 1780, 1783-4. R51/3 (1787) contains a rental of Llanfair Caereinion tithe corn for 1787, while the remaining rentals only contain the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys. After R63/16 (1807), the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys are contained in the Arwystli collection, while rentals of p. Llanfair Caereinion tithes are contained in a separate collection.

Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals

This collection comprises the following: (i) Wynnstay fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Erbistock, Llangollen, Llandisilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Erbistock is omitted from 1880, Llansanffraid from 1888, and Llanarmon from 1917. Wynnstay fee farm rents, 1860-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (Ii) Ruthin fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaiadr yng Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm, and Ruthin. Llanfair is omitted from 1877, and Llanrhaiadr from 1880. Ruthin fee farm rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. (iii) Cynllaith Owain chief rents, comprising property in p. Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas). Estynallan and Sycharth are omitted from 1880, Moelfre from 1886, Rhiwlas from 1889, and Priddbwll from 1915. Cynllaith Owen chief rents, 1808-1896, are also contained in the series of general rentals, and also in the Llangedwyn estate rentals. (iv) Arwystli chief rents, comprising property in p's Llandinam, Llanidloes forming the Berthlwyd estate, and property in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Maes-mawr, Llandinam, Trewyddan, Carnedd, Gwerneirin, Hengynwydd, Deddenydd), Carno, Llanwnnog (t's Uwchlaw'r-coed, Surnant, Esgob, Wig, Ystradfaelog, Caer-sws), Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Bodaeoch, Maestregymer, Dolgwden, Glyntrefnant), Llanidloes (t's Manledd, Brithdir, Glynhafren Iscoed, Ystradhunod, Cefncroesllwybr, Morfodion, Treflyn, Rhydfaes), town of Llanidloes, p. (v) Cyfeiliog chief rents, comprising property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Machynlleth, Machynlleth town. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents, 1808-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vi) Llangurig parish tithes. Tithes for p. Llangurig (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vii) Llanidloes parish tithes, comprising property in t's Brithdir, Cilmachallt, Hengynwydd, Treflyn. Tithes for p. Llanidloes (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (viii) Trefeglwys parish tithes, comprising property in t's Glyntrefnant and Esgeiredd, together with p. Llanbryn-mair. Tithes for p. Trefeglwys (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1866 (RB4) the Glan-llyn chief rents, collected at Michaelmas, are added, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel-y-traethau, and boats on Bala Lake. Boats on Bala Lake are omitted from 1874, property in Trawsfynydd and Llanfihangel-y-traethau are omitted from 1880, and in Llangywer from 1914. Glan-llyn chief rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1890-1892 (RB14) Plas Madoc tithes, collected on 1 Jan., are added, comprising property in p. Ruabon (t. Cristionydd Cynrig). From RB17 (1899-1901) to RB21 (1911-13) the Cynllaith Owain chief rents are omitted. With regard to the covering dates in this series, the fee farm and chief rents were collected at Michaelmas and the tithes were collected on 1 Jan. The rental dated, for example 1893-1895, includes collection sheets for chief rents due Michaelmas 1892-1894 and tithe rents due 1 Jan. 1893-1895.

Tramway and railway agreements

Agreements and other associated papers concerning the construction of tramways and railways on land belonging to Wynnstay or otherwise affecting the estate, 1878-1891. The files relate to the Glyn Valley Tramway, 1878, Pant Glas Tramway at Eglwyseg, 1878-1884, the Great Western Railway at Ruabon, 1882, and The Shropshire Railways Company in Denbighshire, 1891. Some papers in the file for Pant Glas Tramway relate to the erection of fences in the manor of Llanegwest.

Trefarclawdd and Overley Hall Colliery payments

Contained in these payments are details relating to amounts of money paid to colliers, labourers, etc., at Trefarclawdd (in p. Oswestry, Shropshire) and Overley Hall collieries. Collectors: E. Pickering, 1809-1817, and John Howell, 1819-1822. For other accounts pertaining to these collieries, see Wynnstay MSS 104-109, and RA22.

Trefeglwys and Arwystli misc. deeds,

Title deeds for Llwyn y Goke, Ty yn y Glynn, a fulling mill and various properties in the parish of Trefeglwys, 1540-1797; and miscellaneous deeds which appear relevant to the Arwystli estates, 1728-[c. 1780].

Trusts involving Sir John Wynn,

Trusts involving Sir John Wynn of Gwydir and Watstay, concerning payment to Thomas and Sarah Povey, 1665-1673, payment of his own debts, 1681, the will of Robert Lord Viscount Cholmondeley, 1682, and the will of Sir Robert Owen, 1696-1698.

Trusts involving Sir Richard Wynn,

Trusts involving Sir Richard Wynn, concerning payment of alimony to the Fildinge family, 1630, administration of John Bodvell’s estate, 1632, performance of covenants in a mortgage of the Rhiwlas estate, 1651-1658, and the trusteeship of Sir Richard Wynn’s own estate, 1656.

Trusts involving Sir William Williams and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn,

Trusts involving Sir William Williams and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, concerning the will of Florence Bold, 1670-1671; Margaret Thelwall’s jointure lands, 1688; the marriage settlement of David Pennant and Arabella Mytton, 1724; a settlement of Plas Coch and Bathafarn estates, 1725; the estate of Edward Rogers, Sychdyn, Salop, 1733; the will of Ralph Kynaston, 1732-1746; payment of the debts of Edward Williams of Ystum-colwyn, 1734; and the estate of bankrupt John Howell of Trefarclawdd, 1786.

Vale of Clwyd/Plas y Ward, misc. title deeds,

Title deeds which do not fit readily into the previous categories, mainly because they name several parishes in a single transaction or they include properties which appear not to have belonged to Wynnstay. The files describe miscellaneous Thelwall deeds relating to Ruthin and Dyffryn Clwyd, 1543-1623; mortgages of the Thelwall family, 1598-1672; and the will of Robert Jones of Cuddington, Buckinghamshire, devising property in Denbighshire, 1754.

Vale of Clwyd/Ruthin estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanelidan, Derwen, Llanfwrog, Ruthin, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Gyffylliog, Llandyrnog, Denbigh, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Llangwm, and Llanhychan, co. Denb. RA28 includes a survey, late 1850s-early 1860s of the above collection (giving field names, details of acreages, and annual rent due), together with a plan of part of Plas-y-ward farm sold to the Denbigh, Ruthin & Corwen Railway Co., 1860. Collectors: John Williams, 1809-1829, William Turnor, 1830-1832, Thomas Turnor, 1833, Thomas and Walter Turnor, 1834-1837, Walter Turnor, 1838-1839, Thomas Turnor, 1840-1858, Nathan Burlinson, 1859-1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. From R116/3f (1860) onwards, only property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain. Ruthin estate fee farm rents as specified below are also contained in the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals. Property in p. Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd and in Ruthin will also be found in R116/3d and R117/2c (being rentals of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in Llanfwrog, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd and Llanhychan will not be found in the rentals described below, but in R116/3d and R117/2c, then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. See also the series of Farm and Cottage Receiving Rentals (Wynnstay and Ruthin rents). In 1879 (R135/1e) only property in p's Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remains; in 1880 (R136/1e) only property in p's Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain; and from 1881 (R137/1e) onwards only property in p's Denbigh and Llangwm remains. Vaughan family of Llwydiarth, miscellaneous legal cases,

Papers deriving from miscellaneous legal cases involving several members of the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth, 1600-1664. They concern the inheritance of Owen Vaughan, 1600-1616; the title to lands in Montgomeryshire, previously belonging to the dissolved abbey of Ystrad Marchell, 1606; peaceful possession of lands in Cefn-llys, Kyffin, Farchoel, etc., 1608; and the title to lands and grazing in Penllyn, 1652, and Pennant-lliw, Caergai, Maestran and Penaran, 1664.

Vouchers

The general series of vouchers consists of vouchers relating to accounts found in the general series of rentals R119-R153 (1864-1899) and account books Ai 1-2 (1900-1902). Indexes to the vouchers for the period 1878-1919 are available in series Vig. The vouchers are bound in volumes. These volumes may be as much as 12" thick and one may weigh perhaps 20lb.
