Barddoniaeth Gymraeg,

A small volume of Welsh poetry ('cerddi', 'englynion', 'tribanau') by various authors, c. 1728-47. Only the initials of the poets are given. These represented are W. R. Llancarfan [= Wiliam Robert o'r Ydwal], EW (one poem by him is dated 'Cârllydd Corphenaf y 22fed 1731'), J. L., and W. T. [?Wiliam Tomos]. There are also some anonymous pieces.
The following note occurs on p. 17: '[Bum] ynghwysanaeth Mrs White o ... oat o Fawrth yr 28fed 1726 hyd ei marwolaeth hydraf yr al 1727. Mrs Pickard o Theobalds o Chwefror y 17fed 1729 hyd Ebrill y 9fed [1]731. Mr Penrose o Ebrill y 10fed 1731 hyd ei farwolaeth ef, a blwyddyn gyda'i fam hyd Ebrill y 10fed 1745'. Two of the WR poems have been printed in Llên Cymru, III, i, pp. 47-52.

A small notebook containing poetry by Rhys Morgan, David Nicholas, Lewys Hopkin, Edward Evan and James John, including 'Englynion a ganwyd i'r angau yn yr Eisteddfod a gynaliwyd yn y Cymer ymorganwg yn y flwyddyn 1735 ar ddydd gwyl ddewi'. On the outside cover is written 'Prydyddiaeth. John Jones o Aberdâr.' There is also a list of payments or receipts in the Aberdare district.

Leaves from various manuscripts: (i) A photostat facsimile (positive and negative) of a folio which was previously wanting in BM Add. MS 14967 after p. 72 (See Report on Manuscripts in the Welsh Language, Vol. II, Part IV, p. 1001, footnote). The actual folio, numbered xxxviii in the original pagination, has now been sent to the British Museum, with the donor's permission, to be restored to its proper place in the manuscript. It contains the following poems: (a) The last six lines of the 'cywydd' by Gutun Owain beginning 'Y vun uchel o fonedd.' The first line here is 'devwell oedd gennyf gellwair'; (b) A complete 'cywydd' by Gutun Owain beginning, 'Y lloer hael a lliwr heli'; (c) A 'cywydd' by Gruffudd Gryg beginning 'O nenn ffraingk i nann ffrangkon'; (d) A 'cywydd' by Iolo Goch beginning 'Ierwerth drvan ddioerwas.'; (ii) A single folio (?34) from a seventeenth century manuscript [?NLW MS 13078E, 'Llyfr Thomas Bona'], containing a complete copy of the 'cywydd' beginning 'Y ferch or fynachlog fayn', attributed here to Dafydd ap Gwilym, and an almost complete copy of 'Doy royddwn dan orevddail' ending at 'ynghred y byddvt ynghrog' (1.54). The remaining four lines have been supplied in the margin in a later hand (?that of Iolo Morganwg); (iii) A poem by WW beginning 'Herold wy ne gennad siwr' (22 stanzas). The copy is in a seventeenth century hand and seems to be a leaf (?f. 106) from some manuscript. Damaged; (iv) (a) A leaf (pp. 81-82) from an early seventeenth century manuscript containing pedigrees ('llyma ffordh i raeth merched gr: ap Llewelyn voythys', etc.) and a copy of a poem by Dafydd Nanmor beginning 'Nag ymddiried y gaffo bedydh'; (v) Two folios (153-154) from an early seventeenth century manuscript, containing: (a) 'Araith Ieuan Brydydh hir o lanyllted' [ym Morganwg R.V.] beginning, 'Llawer o bethav gwrthwyneb ysoweth y sudh i serchowgrwydh'. Above Iolo Morganwg has written 'Copied'; (b) 'Y Gredo ney/r/ffudh gatholig mewn Mityr Cyffredin', beginning, 'Rwyf yn Credy yn enw y tad' [Ieuan Brydydd hir ai Cant]. Alongside in the margin are two 'englynion' beginning 'Pedwar gwyn llafar ywch llifion - moroedh'; (c) 'Dvhvddiad Elffin, pan gavad Taliessin yngored wydhno goronir, i dad', beginning 'Elffin deg taw ath wylo'. 'Taliessin ae dywawt'; (d) 'Prif fardh wy i elffin, mi elwir Taliessin'. 'Taliessin ai cant'. The handwriting of items (iv) and (v) is very similar; (vi) Three folios from an eighteenth century manuscript containing: (a) The last 44 lines of the 'cywydd' by Dafydd Llwyd beginning 'Mae gwr llwyd yma rhag llaw'. The first line here is 'Nid r[----]dd ym nid rhwydd yma'; (b) [Cow]ydd Treial Tho: Johns, beginning, 'Cry out stand up crier'. 'Incerti Autoris'; (c) 'Cowydd y Cerddorion sef Grüffydd Evans a Sion Davies bencerddwyr deheubarth, 1706,' by Dafydd Manuel, beginning 'Daüwr sydd od eir i sôn'. Fragile; (vii) Seven folios from an eighteenth century manuscript containing: (a) A 'cywydd' by Howel dd ap Iefan ap Rees beginning, 'Y groeg droedog drydoll' [sic]; (b) A 'cywydd' by Iolo Goch beginning 'Saint y Caint a saint Cutus'; (c) 'Cywydd y Llwynog' beginning 'Tydi'r Llwynog or Ogof'; (d) A poem in free metre beginning, '[Po]b rhyw Gymro pur natturiol gwrandewch hanes wir rhyfeddol'...; (e) 'Englynion' by Richard Thomas, 1726, beginning, 'O fy Nuw da clyw er Clôd - ith enw'; (f) Verses beginning 'Gwr onest wi beunydd clyw gwrando fy ffrynd'... 'Ci Enwog di Enw gorchmynwch o mynwch ai Cant, 1723'; (g) 'Englynion' (3) beginning, 'Serchog dda ddoniog o ddyn - Iawn chwiliwch'...; (h) 'Englynion' (4) beginning, 'Dwg fannerch trwy serch Shion - doeth Rhydderch'...; (i) 'Englynion (?) Sion Rhydderch am y ddaear gryn mis Gorphenaf 1727' beginning, 'Cryn ddaear o fâr pwy ddyfala - wr'....; (j) 'Englynion' (3) by Richard Thomas, 1727, beginning 'Duw Nêr duw aurner duw arnon - edrych'; (k) 'Englynion' (4) by Richard Thomas, beginning 'Saith Arch Angel syw al sydd - yn injon'; (l) 'Englynion' by Shion Rhydderch, 1720, 'Ar Eistedd(fod) y Beurdd yn Estrad Owain arferol ei gynnal Mai yr 28', beginning 'Och na bawn o ddawn ddynol - Trwy gennad'...; (m) 'Ynglynion ei wythnos y dioddefaint', beginning 'Ai rhwng Iddewon wyr hu - drygonys'; (n) An 'englyn' by Richard Thomas beginning '[Y] mae Pasc ar dasc yn dod - ymbiliwn'; (o) A prose narrative beginning 'Ag yno y danfonodd Ysbessianys lythyr at Deitys ei fab i'r India ...'; (p) 'Cywydd proffwydoliaeth Sion y Cent' beginning 'Och Gymru fynych gamraint'. There is also a copy of the form of the oath against simony; (viii) A leaf from a seventeenth century manuscript containing the last couplet only of a 'cywydd' by Siôn Phylip, 1613, and lines 1-44 of a 'cywydd' entitled 'marwnad am Domas ab Elis' beginning, 'Dvg brvtvs hwylvs helynt'. (The next folio would begin 'os i glera'...). The couplet by Siôn Phylip belongs to 'Cefais i ond cofus oedd'... . Mr W. Gerallt Harries states that this is the hand of Thomas Evans, Hendreforfudd (cf. NLW MSS 253 and 1553-54); (ix) A leaf from a seventeenth century manuscript, containing 'englynion' by Rhys Kain, Sion Philip, Huw Pennant, Tho: James, and Morgan ap Hugh Lewis, in the hand of William Bodwrda. (?) In the margin Iolo Morganwg has written 'Copied into Brith y coed'; (x) A leaf from a late sixteenth or early seventeenth century manuscript containing the first 38 lines of a 'cowydd' beginning 'kywirder vab howder hedd' by [Huw Arwystl]. The last line here is 'a chwi o waed ychaf oll'. In the margin Iolo Morganwg has written 'Llaw Sion Tudur honn, meddai Twm o'r Nant', but this appears doubtful; (xi) One folio, numbered 56 and 59, from a manuscript written c. 1600, containing a series of 'englynion' ['I'r Eos'] beginning 'Mvssic inn koedwic mewn Kevdawd - llwyn', an 'englyn' beginning 'y Kybydd a vydd ar i vael - yn gwilio', a few Welsh proverbs, and 'englynion' by S. Vaughan and John tudur, etc. The couplet 'Ysbys i dengys pob dyn ... 8 appears to be in the hand of William Salesbury. In the margin is an 'englyn' by Edward Moris beginning, 'Pulpud wraig coed wraig cauad rôs-glasliw', written in an eighteenth century hand.; (xii) A leaf of 'englynion' in the autograph of William Salesbury (cf. Cwrtmawr MS 3, to which it may have belonged). A copy of two of the four 'englynion' on the one side ('Mi welais wr yngwm twrch' and 'Er dyw dauydd loywrydd lafn') may be found in Panton MS 10,100. On the reverse side are five 'englynion', the first of which begins 'Porth thomas porth pigas p[?ic]. Damaged. Fragile; (xiii) Two fragments containing vaticinations attributed to Myrddin, Taliesin, and Adda Fras, and an 'Englyn i gael y pasc byth', etc., written in a seventeenth century hand, cf. NLW MS 13169B; (xiv) 'Tribanau' (3) 'at Llewelyn ab Iefan' by Edward Gamage, Periglor Plwyf St Athans, beginning, 'Pe bysswn drôll o Brydydd'. ... On the reverse side are some medical recipes and a paragraph beginning, 'That there is a God may be proved not only from'.. &c.; (xv) Verses by Lewis Price beginning, 'Er gwario honai yn ofer o amser i amser '..... and six verses 'Ar dryban' beginning 'beth a wneir a ha heb aya'...; (xvi) 'Tri Englyn o waith Tri ô Brydyddion i'r ysbaddan anwydog (yr hon ydoedd ar fynnydd Llanllyfni) pan ddoethont i ochel Cafod fawr o wlad dani', beginning, 'Tew-grys to dyrys ty aderyn - gwyll', in the autograph of Michael Prichard, Llanllyfni. Beneath Iolo Morganwg has written, 'Copied into Brith y Coed'; (xvii) Seven leaves (very fragile) from a seventeenth century manuscript, containing 'cywyddau' by Ieuan Dyyfi, Gruffudd Hiraethog, and Syr Ifan, written in a hand similar to parts of Cwrtmawr MS 5.; (xviii) A fragment (two leaves, mutilated) from a seventeenth century manuscript containing vaticinations by [?Taliesin] and Rhys Nanmor, in the same sequence as they are to be found in Llanstephan MS 136, 61e - 63b. The hand resembles that of (xiii) above; (xix) Verses entitled 'The Welsh Bachelour's Wish, being an Allusion to the English Doctor's. Beneath is an 'englyn' (mutilated) 'I fam y Meibion cyn Priodi', beginning, 'Rhodded Duw fy syw im'Siân - Fôn hyddy[---].' On the reverse side are some more English verses. Damaged; (xx) A leaf (?originally pp. 17-18 of some manuscript volume) containing on the one side 'Gweddiol Gan tros Blwyfe sir Gaernarfon', stanzas 19-26, and on the reverse side 'Gweddiol Gan tros Blwyfe sir Feirionydd', dated 3 Jan. 1765, stanzas 1-7.

A small collection of 'cywyddau', etc., by Morgan Powel, Llewelyn Sion o Langewydd, Thomas Llewelyn, Dio Lliwel, Gryffydd Grug, Siôn Tudur, Rhys ap Harri, Sion y Cent, Thomas Sion Catti, Rhisiart Thomas 'o ben y bont', and Rhydderch Sion Llewelyn.
Also included are 'Rheolau i wybod pa wedd y molir pob peth a ddylid ei foli' and a draft invitation or summons to an Eisteddfod to be held at Llantrisant, Glamorgan, in 1771, [?possibly in the hand of Iolo Morganwg]. The final two 'englynion' on p. 14 are in the hand of Iolo Morganwg.

Carchariad Tomos Glyn Cothi,

Papers, mainly in the autograph of Iolo Morganwg, relating to the case of the Rev. Thomas Evans (Tomos Glyn Cothi), who was imprisoned in 1801 for sedition (16 items). Some of these papers have been described by Prof. G. J. Williams in Llên Cymru, 3 (1954-6), 120-122.

Castles in the Air,

'Castles in the Air, By a Journey-man Mason', being a collection of English verse by Iolo Morganwg, in two volumes. The poems are not in their final form, and alternatives are often given above or below the original words. The pages in the first volume are numbered 1-140; the second volume is a continuation to p. 191, followed by 59 unnumbered pages. The first volume contains an index as far as p. 169.

Cerddoriaeth (IAW 145)

Bundles of music manuscripts mostly in the hand of Iolo Morganwg, including a file of traditional music, previously 'IAW 145' (E1/1); manuscripts of a few further traditional tunes (E1/2); bundles of miscellaneous music manuscripts, including salmau, traditional music, English tunes, etc. (E1/3-5); and loose leaves originally belonging to a single tune book (E1/6).
The contents of E1/1 have been published in Alawon Gwerin Iolo Morganwg, ed. by Leila Salisbury (Aberystwyth, 2012), together with six further tunes (Nos. 4, 5, 17, 28, 40, 50) designated 'IAW 145 (uncat.)', all now to be found in E1/2.

Commonplace book,

A Commonplace Book which belonged to William Roberts of St Athans, containing poetry (including some verses in Welsh), grammatical notes, personal memoranda, dreams, etc. Most of the dated entries range from 1743 to 1760, but there are a few earlier ones, e.g. verses 'writ at Kellyire in Carmarthinshire near Golden Grove May 1713' (if these are by William Roberts). The writer refers to his sons Christopher (Kitt or Kitty) and Jack, and to the death of his wife, Hannah, in Dec. 1760 (a Hannah Roberts was buried at St Athans on 10 Dec. 1760).
