These 53 letters are concerned with a dispute between H. Hussey Vivian and W. Graham Vivian as to how much of the company's profits they should, respectively, receive. Hussey Vivian argues that he should receive two thirds of the money, claiming he has every right to do so under their father's will. Graham Vivian, on the other hand, considers the money should be equally shared, as suggested by their father's will. A statement of Hussey's case in 1868 is among his papers (C3238-51). The first few letters, between Hussey Vivian and his father, J. H. Vivian, involved Hussey's argument that he should be better paid for all the work he did for the company. In letter C1494, dated April 1856, the two brothers decided to appeal for a decision on the matter to the two referees appointed in their father's will - Wm Jones Loyd and W. Gibson Craig. In letter C1538, however, Hussey continues to say he will not allow any modification of his proposals. There are some duplicate letters (C1457-1463 and C1464-5; C1467 and C1468; C1478-81 and C1482-3; C1486-88 and C1489-91; C1494 and C1495; C1499-1500 and C1502-3; C1518 and C1519; C1521-22 and C1523-24; C1528 and C1531-32). A more legible copy of C1457-63 may be found in A399.

Vivian, from Coulthurst and Van Sommer, about payment of legacy duties. Letters C1558-1559 have a valuation of the properties of Thistleboon and Park Wern, and various insurance policies held by the family. Letters C1562-63 and C1566 are concerned with J. H. Vivian's shares in the Swansea Coal Company. Letters C1566, C1569-1574 concern the formation of a partnership between the four brothers as A. P. Vivian and R. Glynn Vivian come of age. Letter C1567 discusses the inheritance of Miss Lalage Vivian, daughter of R. H. Vivian. No. C1576 summarises payments from the Hafod Ledger to S. Vivian from 1855 to 1862.
