Written to G.S.V. at Nice. His father well and had taken a prominent part in dinner at Rhaeadr to celebrate Lewis Lloyd's son's coming-of-age. Fanny Bradshaw, Lady Hereford's daughter, died in childbirth. He and Mary been staying at Harpton Court with Sir George and Lady Cornewall Lewis. Among the guests N. Senior and Mrs Grote, who knew George. Election of Chief Constable caused trouble and many journeys. Has advertised for a curate. Some family news. Very wet weather and roads badly broken up. Written just before leaving for Quarter Sessions at Presteign before Judge Truro. He uncertain about Judge's family connections. Many serious cases this time. Writing articles for Saturday Review suits G.S.V. better than for Times. Disraeli's plan of selecting £10 voters of five towns for Indian patronage is absurd. Has looked at Pemberton's house and others but all unsuitable. Mr J. Williams of Rhaeadr has enquired whether Llysdinam is to be let. Asks for an advance of money until [his father's] affairs settled, details of financial position. Has ordered Cardinal Wiseman's book. Lewis and Walsh two members of deputation of Welsh MPs to remonstrate with Home Sec. about new assize scheme.
