A composite volume comprising two notebooks originally used by the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837) for personal and family memoranda and accounts (mainly 1821-37) of debts, wages paid to female servants, tithes, provisions, payments of interest and repayments of debts. It also includes accounts, 1816-24, between H. L. Eddes Gwynne and the Reverend Thomas Richards relating to Hirnant rents. The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen to record transcripts of letters, mainly between various members of the Richards family but including also letters from R. A minute book of the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys (established 6 October 1819), 1819-1820, together with a list of members, 1819-1822. The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen, and, to a lesser extent, by Thomas R. Williams, Bryn Tanad, Llanerfyl, to record transcripts of a list of British kings to George III ('Tabl o holl Frenhinodd Prydain or dechreiad Cyntaf hyd ein Brenin George y IIII) from the Almanac of Thomas Jones, Shrewsbury, 1709; poetry in strict and free metres by E[dward] J[ones] (Periglor Caer Einion) (1875), [Hugh Parry] (Cefni) (Utica, N.Y.) A volume in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans (1818-1903) containing annotated extracts from manuscripts in the Llanover Collection, taken at Llanover during the period 1881-2; a vocabulary of the dialect of Lleyn; etc. Among the insets and pastedowns is a holograph letter from B[enjamin] Wil[liams] ['Gwynionydd'], Cwmdwr to [D. Silvan Evans], 1882 (a contribution by the writer to Yr Haul, personal).

A short grammar of the English language written in Welsh by 'Glasryw'. The title is wanting but the second part is described as 'Byr Rammadeg o'r Iaith Saesoneg. Yn fwy enwedig lle y gwahana hi oddiwrth Yr Iaith Gymreig'. There are sections dealing in turn with phonology, accidence, and syntax. The work was intended for competition and opens with an explanatory address to the adjudicators ('At y Barnwyr'). Beginning at the end, in the hand of Daniel Silvan Evans, is an alphabetical list of Welsh synonyms ('Cyfystyron yr Iaith Gymraeg') and the names of subscribers to the writer's proposed A Dictionary of the Welsh Language [Carmarthen, 1887-1906].

A volume containing two texts of 'The Travels of Charlemagne To Jerusalem and Constantinople', the one in French and the other in Welsh. The latter is from the Red Book of Hergest (Jesus College MS 1, col. 605 ff.) and is said to 'have been 'Transcribed from a copy made by Mr John Rhys, and collated with the original MS by Mr Llywarch Reynolds, March 8th 1870, and recopied from the transcript of Mr Reynolds, by Thomas Stephens', 22 July 1872.

An incomplete annotated transcript by Daniel Silvan Evans of 'Ystoria de Carolo Magno' from a transcript made by Ll[ywarch] Reynolds, Jesus College, Oxford, June 16, 1870, from the Red Book of Hergest (Jesus College MS 1, col. 381 ff.). A composite volume almost entirely in the hand of the Reverend Robert Williams (1810-81), Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry. It contains a list of contents and a complete transcript of Peniarth MS 152 ('cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Gutto'r Glynn, etc.), completed at Rhydycroesau, 21 December 1870; a transcript from Brogyntyn MS 2, with an English translation, of a 'cywydd' by Tudur Penllyn transcribed 2 February 1871; two copies of a 'cywydd' by Sion Kain transcribed from Peniarth MS [116], 14 November 1876, with relevant marginal pedigrees, poetry in strict and free metres by Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] from 'Cydymeth Ifiengtid; sef Cerddi Cowyddau, ag Englynion tra dewisol na buant yn Argraffedig yr rioed hyd eitha fy ngwibodheth, sef Gwaith amriw rai o brydyddion cymru wedi gasglu gan Dafydd Evans, Llanfihangel, 1785'; 'Cywyddau Cywilyddus o [ffug-]waith Gweyrful Mechain', a 'cywydd' by Tydur Penllyn and 'englynion' by Iorwerth Vynglwyd, from 'Llyfr Hir Llywarch Reynolds' (NLW MS 970) and Llanstephan MS 35; and an incomplete list of contents of Cwrtmawr MS 242. Silvan Evans containing copious transcripts of prose and poetry texts and extracts from several manuscripts in the Llanover collection, e.g. 'Dafydd ab Gwilym', 'Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug', 'Pennillion diarhebol Iolo Morganwg', 'Pennillion Serch Gwasgar Iolo Morganwg', 'Dyriau Gwasgar', 'Darnau Defnyddion Doethineb Teuluaidd', 'Gwersi Doethineb', 'Gwasgaredd Doethineb', 'Silurian Phrases' 'Cyngor i Feirdd a Dysgedigion Cymru', 'Ffermyddiaeth', 'Arferion Morganwg', 'Trioedd y Llafurwr', 'Tywyddolion', etc. The transcripts of manuscripts at Llanover were made during the period 1880-2 but some annotations by the scribe are dated to 1892. According to a note at the end of the transcript, one transcript by H[ugh[ B[rython] H[ughes] was sent for publication in Yr Haul in 1874 (see Yr Haul, 1874, pp. 427-8). A note on page 406 refers to a transcript made by Thomas Miles ('Gwas Arglwyddes Llanover') for D. Silvan Evans in September 1882. The spine of each volume is lettered 'Manion Cof a Chadw', with the appropriate volume number.

(I) A home-made notebook of Morris Davies of Bangor (1796-1876), author, hymnologist and musician, containing material towards a biography of the Reverend Peter Williams (1723-96) and draft resolutions of a committee of Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church, Bangor, 1851-2 (with a reference to the proposed erection of 'Capel Upper Bangor' i.e. Twr-gwyn Chapel). The volume is made up of a variety of printed and manuscript sheets, including an undated printed appeal for subscriptions towards the presentation of his own portrait to Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), an undated printed prospectus of E. Williams, milliner and dress maker, High Street, Bangor; a notice of a meeting of the Provisional Directors of the Rhiw Bach Slate Quarries Company, 1853; a letter from the Reverend John Hughes, Liverpool to M[orris] Davies, 1848 (enclosing books, the possible re-publication of a book of hymns); a printed prospectus of Samuel Roberts, Bangor Agency, China Tea Company, 1852; a letter from Ebenezer M. Roberts, Pwllheli to [Morris Davies], 1853 (the debt still remaining on Penymount Chapel) (with a draft reply); a printed prospectus of [J.] Russell's Menai Bathing Machines, Gored-y-Gyd, Bangor, 1853; and letters from Morris Davies to [ ], undated (an appointment), Croxon, Jones, C[o.], [bankers], Oswestry to John Jones, currier, Llanfyllin, 1838 (a payment), and Thomas Gee, Denbigh to [Morris Davies], 1850 (an allocation to the recipient from the proceeds of Y Traethodydd for 1849). (Ii) A small notebook containing a copy of a letter written in response to a letter published in Y Gwyliedydd, XI (1834), pp. 296-8, relating to the Reverend Peter Williams.

A manuscript in the hand of William John Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') containing two 'awdlau' on 'Pwlpud Cymru' by 'Gweledydd' and 'Hefin ab Gwyndaf' respectively, which were submitted for competition at Pontypridd National Eisteddfod, 1893, and an ?'incomplete adjudication on the 'hir a thoddeidiau' on 'Toriad y Dydd' at the same eisteddfod. 'Gwilym Cowlyd' was one of the adjudicators in both competitions. The prize for the 'awdl' was awarded to 'Obed-Edom (the Reverend J. Ceulanydd Williams, Maesteg) and for the 'hir a thoddaid' to 'Glan Gweryddon' (William Roberts, 'Gwilym Eryri').

A notebook in the hand of Morris Davies, Bangor containing 'Select Extracts' from printed sources (e.g. the introduction to W. Williams: Caniadau y rhai sydd ar y Môr o Wydr (3ydd arg., 1764); poetry in strict and free metres by [John Jones] 'Tegid', [Daniel Evans] 'Daniel Ddu o Geredigion', Huw Morus, [Thomas Edwards] 'Caerfallwch', Rice Jones [o'r Blaenau] and [David Richards] 'Dafydd Ionawr'; an account of 'The Musical Idiot' in the Salpêtrière at Paris; extracts from William Owen-Pughe: Coll-Gwynfa (Llundain, 1819); and metrical proverbs by 'Richard (Risiart) Dlawd'.

Miscellaneous papers, including a catechism entitled 'Sylwadau ar y Ddeddf foesol'; 'Gwlad ffynnonau dyfroedd', being a description of the Llanwrtyd district; bibliographical memoranda in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'); English verses in the hand of Angharad Llwyd; an 'englyn' by [David Richards] '[Dewi] Silin'; an 'awdl' entitled 'Y Pregethwr Politicaidd' (Ar y pedwar mesur ar hugain) by 'Pechadur' in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'); etc. The papers are contained within the cover of an account book of Evan Evans, c. 1854.

'Trysorfa'r Bardd', being a holograph collection of poetry in strict and free metres, almost entirely in Welsh, by David Saunders, otherwise Dafydd ab Domos Saunders, otherwise 'Dafydd Glan Teifi' (1769-1840), Baptist minister successively at Aberdyar, Carmarthenshire and Merthyr Tudful, Glamorganshire. At the beginning is an incomplete address to the reader ('Llythr at y Darllenydd') and a list of contents ('Tabl Cynnwyssiad y Llyfr'). The volume was begun at the author's home at Undergrove [Lampeter, Cardiganshire], Christmas day 1798, and was completed about 1822.

Four notebooks containing Welsh sermons preached during the period 1829-77, partly by Peter Bailey Williams (1763-1836), at Llanrug, Llanberis, Llanfair [? Isgaer], Bettws [Garmon], Carnarvon Gaol, Clynnog, Cwmyglo and Waenfawr, Caernarvonshire.

An early nineteenth century manuscript containing two Unitarian tracts entitled respectively 'Cyfarchiad At Aelodau yr Eglwys Sefydledig ac at Drindodiaid Protestanaidd yn gyffredinol Lle yr annogir ac y cynghorir hwynt I droi oddi wrth Gau-addoliad tri o Bersonau I addoli Yr Unig Wir Dduw' and 'Ail Gyfarchiad At Aelodau yr Eglwys Sefydledig ac at Addolwyr tri Pherson ac un Duw, O Bob Enw'.

A notebook in three hands containing English translations of poetry by Alphonse de Lamartine, among them being versifications by G. Hughes, Oakley Lodge, Gloucestershire, and translations by Amédé Louis Joseph Guidez; 'englynion' by [Daniel Evans] 'Daniel Ddu [o Geredigion]' and [John Jones] 'Ioan Tegid', 1828, and English translations and imitations of poetry of 'Ioan Tegid' by T. S. A. and T. J., 1832-6; and an extract from Francois René, vicomte de Chateaubriand: Les Martyrs, ou Le Triomphe de la Religion Chrétienne, together with a corresponding Latin translation by M. Guidez. Although the fly-leaf bears the name of Alcwyn C. Evans, Carmarthen none of the text is in his hand.
