A mutilated notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a list of early Welsh books ('The first Welsh books'), 1546-1646, and an incomplete transcript of the introduction to William Salesbury, Oll Synnwyr Pen Kembero Ygyd [1547].

Pregethau Robert Thomas, Llidiardau,

A notebook, completed 20 October 1873, containing transcripts and extracts, from another manuscript, of sermons and sermon notes by Robert Thomas (1796-1866) of Llidiardau, Merioneth, Calvinistic Methodist preacher and 'character'. Some of the sermons are dated within the period 1823-72 and there are occasional annotations such as 'old', 'see cofiant' [i.e. Owen Jones, Hanes Bywyd Robert Tomos, Llidiardau (Wrexham, 1869)], 'good', 'later', etc. There are references to 'Cyfarfod Bibliau y Bala' (p. 74), 1847, 'Amser gwneyd Bethesda [i.e. Calvinistic Methodist chapel, Blaenau Ffestiniog] (p. 122), and to Cynll[w]yd [in Llanuwchllyn] and to Cwmtirmynach and Penmaen [in Llanfor] (p. 145). At the beginning of the volume is an index of texts which is almost complete.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing brief notes on the contents of some manuscripts in the Welsh School and Cymmrodorion Society Collections in the British Museum.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a short list of Welsh books and books of Welsh interest, 1573-1760. Tipped in at the end are additional titles written on the dorse of a letter from Owen Jones, Esgerwenfach, Mydroilyn to J. H. Davies, [19]16 (the completion of an agricultural form).

Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a revised address by him to a society or meeting of London Welshmen, c. May 1905, on 'Y Llyfrgell Genedlaethol, ei chynnwys a'i Lleoliad', i.e. on the nature and scope of the proposed national library for Wales and on the reasons in favour of siting it at Aberystwyth. Inset are two forms of resolutions, the one worded for the Society ('Y Gymdeithas hon') and the other for the meeting ('y cyfarfod hwn'), in support of the claim of Aberystwyth.

A scribbling tablet in the hand of J. H. Davies containing annotated lists of: (A) letters, 1748-68, of Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu o Fôn'; 1701-65) in the possession of his great-grandson, Sir Lewis Morris (1833-1907) ('Received the above letters from Sept. 6 1756 inclusive. T. V. Roberts'; 'Received all the above letters from T. V. Roberts on Sept. 30th 1903. J. H. Davies') and (B) letters, 1728-64, of the Morris brothers and of their nephew John Owen and others, in the possession of J. H. Davies ('obtained from D. Silvan Evans Coll[ectio]n and originally from Rev. J. Blackwell thro Mr Kirkham, Llanbrynmair'); and some miscellaneous biographical notes.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an annotated list of printed Welsh ballads in the J. D. Lewis (Llandysul) collection (John David Lewis; 1859-1914).

Letters written to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry,

Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. Silvan Evans from W[illia]m Price, Llanffwyst, Abergavenny, 1869 (an addition to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry), [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys', Bangor, [18]78 (the title of Llyfer Plygain, 1618, transcribed by the writer from a volume examined at the Pengwern [Mostyn] sale in 1874), W[illiam] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), Machynlleth, 1862-4 (4) (additions and corrections to [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymru], with references to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), to [Jane] Davies, Penmaen, to W. F. Skene, etc., a request by a local printer to be allowed to print the recipient's edition of the works of [Walter Davies] Gwallter Mechain', the writer's removal from the manse to another house in Machynlleth and subsequently to Oswestry, the reported cataloguing of 'Llyfrfa Coleg Dewi' [the library of St. David's College, Lampeter], the illness and voyage to Australia of the writer's son), and from W[illiam] Spurrell, Carmarthen to [William] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') at Brynmawr, 1851-2 (2) (the writer's copy of Sion Dafydd Rhys's Welsh Grammar, biography of John Daniel, printer of Carmarthen). Some of the unbound titles are in the hand of Richard Williams (1835-1906), Celynog, Newtown and there is some later and additional material in the hand of J. H. Davies.

Gwaith 'Manod Wyllt',

A collection of notebooks and unbound leaves and fragments containing poetry in strict and free metres and prose writings by and largely in the hand of Rhys Williams ('Manod Wyllt'; 1841-67), of Hendre, Blaenpennal, Cardiganshire. Such of the compostions as are dated belong to the period 1857-65. Some of the verses are covered by letters to [Richard Davies] 'Mynyddog', 1864, [Hugh Parry] 'Hywel Glan Cefni', 1864, [John Lewis] 'Ioan Mynyw', undated, etc., and others are annotated in the hand of Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd'), who anonymously edited Caniadau Manod Wyllt, gyda Chofiant o'r Awdur (Aberystwyth, 1867). The prose writings consist of essays, lectures and expository notes on scripture and among the titles are 'Meddwdod a'i Effeithiau', 'Dylanwad Cymdeithas ar Fasnach a Chelfyddyd', 'Darlith ar Nodweddiad Cynulleidfaol y Cymru', 'Santeiddhad a Ffrwythau' ('Un o Destynau Cyfarfod dau fisol yr ysgolion yn Ysbytti, Mawrth 20 1861'), 'Darlith ar y Myglys', 'Anniweirdeb', 'Na chymer enw Duw yn ofer', 'Cariad', 'Meddwl', etc. One volume was originally an account book, 1845-65, of ?a local (Blaenpennal area) Women's Friendly Society and was subsequently used as a scrap book for cuttings from Baner ac Amserau Cymru, 20 September 1865, recording proceedings at the Aberystwyth National Eisteddfod of that year. Among a few related items in the collection is a holograph list of literary prizes entitled 'Cofrestr o'r Gwobryon a Enillais', 1862-3.

Yny lhyvyr hwnn,

A notebook and unbound leaves in the hand of J. H. Davies containing material assembled towards his edition of Yny lhyvyr hwnn (Bangor, London, 1902).

Mynegion i farddoniaeth,

Five files of unbound leaves containing titles and first lines of poems by mediaeval Welsh strict metre bards. The bards are arranged in alphabetical order of names and, in their present order, Cwrtmawr MSS 726-7 and Cwrtmawr MSS 728-30 appear to comprise two separate indexes. The compiler - inferentially working on manuscripts in the British Museum - has not recorded the shelf and page numbers of their source material; however, there are some such references and other insets and additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

Tipyn o Bobpeth,

A volume lettered on the spine 'Tipyn o Bobpeth', being a scrap-book of press cuttings compiled c. 1900-02 by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). On two occasions only has the compiler recorded his sources, i. e. Y Cerddor and Y Drych, but inferentially there are many cuttings from the latter. A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing an incomplete bibliography of books in Welsh or of Welsh interest classified under the following titles and sub titles:-. I Theology:. 1. A scrap book compiled by ?John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing undated cuttings from Welsh and Welsh American newspapers, among those (identified on internal evidence) being Y Gweithiwr, Y Celt and Y Drych. Titles include 'Y Flwyddyn' (being an account of Welsh customs associated with feast days) partly signed by 'M.M.', 'Nodiadau Henafiaethol' by O[wen] Morgan ('Morien'), Pontypridd, 'Hynafiaeth Llanilltyd Fawr' by [David Watkin Jones] 'Dafydd Morganwg', 'Hynafiaethau Ceredigion' by John Rowlands ('Giraldus'), Cardiff , 'Yr Eisteddfod' by [Lewis Williams Lewis] 'Llew Llwyfo', 'Gwyddoniaeth, Moesoldeb a Chrefydd' by R. C. Roberts, Deerfield, N. Y., 'Llydaw a'r Llydawiaid' (being a report of a lecture delivered [in Liverpool] by E[dward] Thomas ('Cochfarf'), Cardiff), 'Beirniadaethau Eisteddfod Utica, N. Y.' Afonydd Cymru,

A scrap book lettered 'Afonydd Cymru' compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). It contains press cuttings entitled 'Afonydd Cymru' (from Yr Haul, 1870-1, passim), 'Yr Afon Wynion' by 'Glan Wynion', Dolgellau and by 'E' [from Y Cymro], 'Llenyddiaeth yr Afonydd' by 'Idnerth', Buth y Bardd, 'Taith ar hyd Glan yr Afon Ceri, Ceredigion' (incomplete), 'Prif afonydd swyddi Caer yn Arfon a Meirion' by 'Peris'' (from Y Gwyliedydd, May 1833), 'Rhestr o brif lynoedd Cymru', 'Llynoedd Sir Gaernarfon', etc., with annotations and additions in the hand of the compiler.

An imperfect interleaved copy of W. Owen Pughe, Geiriadur Cenhedlaethol Cymraeg a Saesneg. A National Dictionary of the Welsh Language [3rd ed., by Robert John Pryse, Denbigh, 1866], with copious annotations and additions, mainly in the hand of Robert Roberts ('Y Sgolor Mawr') and occasionally in the hand of D. Silvan Evans.

A file of imperfect sections and final proof sheets (pp. 1-208) of J. H. Davies, The National Library of Wales. Catalogue of Manuscripts. Volume I. A manuscript in the hand of J. H. Davies recounting the activities of Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu o Fôn') in Cardiganshire (with particular reference to the incidents at Esgair-mwyn lead mine in 1751-3 which led to his imprisonment); and a typescript article by [J. H. Davies] entitled 'Morysiaid Môn a'u lle yn Hanes Cymru'.
