Cardiganshire extracts,

A volume in the hand of J. H. Davies containing extracts from manuscript and printed sources and from public records largely relating to Cardiganshire (e.g. family pedigrees, with references to the life and work of Dafydd ap Gwilym; ministers' accounts, with lists of officers of commotes; rentals and surveys, court rolls, inquisitions post mortem, etc.).

A scrap-book of press cuttings of Cardiganshire interest. The titles include 'Y Parch. Phiup [sic] Pugh a'i Amserau' (attributed in the hand of J. H. Davies to D. Worthington, with the comment that 'This article is wrong in nearly every detail'), 'Some Old Records of Cardiganshire', 'Cymru Fu' ('Grand Jurors for 1732', 'An old Revenue Conflict in Cardiganshire', 'Old Welsh Ballads', 'Extracts from Gaol Files', 'The First Press in Wales', and 'The Manor of Perfedd...'), 'Glimpses of Aberystwyth in Shakespeare's Time' by E. A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing four entries of death of members of the family of Rowland of Wenallt, parish of Llangeitho, 1845-54; transcripts of two memorial inscriptions from [the parish churchyard of] Llanbadarn [Odwyn], 1709-55; and copious extracts from indexes in the Diocesan Probate Registry, Carmarthen (now in the National Library of Wales) of testators, 1600-1792 (but almost entirely 1600-95) in the parishes of Llan[ddewi] Brevy, Llangeitho, Caron, Bettws Bled[rws], Llan[badarn] Od[w]yn, Nantcwnlle, Gwnnws, Trevilan, etc.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing memoranda of public records (16th to 19th century) of Cardiganshire interest; an annotated list of signatories alphabetically extracted from A Word for God (1655); etc.

Carolau duwiol,

A late seventeenth century manuscript of anonymous 'carolau', etc. The volume is written in two hands and is lettered 'Carolau Duwiol'.

Transcripts by Mary Richards, Darowen of carols, hymns, etc. by [Robert Roberts] 'Robin Meirion' (1827), Thomas Edwards ['Twm o'r Nant'], Rowlan[d] Hugh ('r cryenin'), Arthur Jones, Hugh Jones (Maesglasau), Dafydd Harris and D. Silvan Evans ('Hirlas'), and anonymous compositions. The scribe's name on the fly-leaf is dated 1873. Beginning from the end, in another hand, are undated measurements of a house and farm buildings, etc.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an annotated list of printed Welsh ballads in the J. D. Lewis (Llandysul) collection (John David Lewis; 1859-1914).

Casgliad o Gerddi a Charolau ...,

A collection of poetry almost entirely in free metres entitled 'Casgliad o Gerddi a Charolau ar amryw Destynau O waith amriw Feirdd Cymru'. The manuscript is in the hand of David Ellis, Cricieth, and was written around 1790-1. The poets represented are Arthur Jones ('Clochydd Llan Gadwaladr yn swydd Ddinbych') (1743-56), Morys Roberts (Bala), Huw Thomas (Llandderfel) (1729, 1752), David Ellis (1757-91), Huw Morys, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), William Wynne ('Person Llangynhafal') (1745), Richard Parry ('Athraw Ysgol yn Niwbwrch'), Ellis Cadwaladr (Edeirnion) (1718), Ellis ab Ellis ('Gweinidog Eglwys Rhos a Llan Dudno') (1683), Iolo ap Ieuan, Edward Morris, Edward Jones (Bodffari), Rhys Ellis ('o'r Waun'), David Jones otherwise 'Dafydd hir o Lanfair Talhaiarn', Griffith Edward, Morgan Llwyd (Maentwrog), Edward Samuel ('Person Llangarw gwyn'), and Evan Herbert ('Gweinidog Llan Illtud a Llan Fachreth'). At the end of the volume is a table of contents ('Cynwysiad y Caniadau') and an index of poets ('Enwau'r Prydyddion ...'). The spine is lettered 'David Ellis MS'.

A collection entitled 'Casgliad o hên Gerddi difyr a digri', being transcripts, with annotations, by J. H. Davies from manuscript and printed sources, notably NLW Add. MS 9 in the hand of David Jones ('Dewi Fardd'), Trefriw, of 'cerddi', 'carolau', and a few cywyddau, by Robt. Humphreys alias Ragad, Angharad James, Rees Ellis, Morus Rhobert, Cadwaladr Morris, Richard Thomas, Hugh ab Evan, William Phylip, William Pyrs Dafydd, Edward Roberts ('o'r Yspytty'), Beuno Ben-noeth ('o Sir Gaer helbul'), Lewis Cynllwyd, Maurice Evans, Rowland Vaughan, Salbri Powel, Richard Phylip ('Philip Bach pan oedd Sawdwr'), Huwcyn Sion, John Edwards ('o Gae-môr'), Morgan Llwyd ('o Faentwrog'), Dafydd Evans ('o Lansilin'), Wm. The volume also contains anonymous poems and a list of 'Cerddi'r Te' or ballads based on the general introduction of tea-drinking into Wales. At the end there are an index of first lines of the poems included in the volume, an index of authors and a calendar of the contents of NLW Add. MS 9. The collection was compiled approximately during February - July 1902.

Casgliad o Salmau a hymnau ...,

A volume containing what appears to be the original manuscript of Casgliad o Salmau a hymnau at wasanaeth yr addoliad cyhoedd, ac ymarger neilltuedig ... gan Morris Davies, Llanfyllin (Bala: Robert Saunderson, 1832). The list of errata ('Gwallau') is identical with that contained in the printed volume, but the following note occurs in the margin of the subject index ('Mynegai o'r prif Faterion cynnwysedig yn y Psalmau a'r Hymnau yn y casgliad hwn'): 'Please to alter the figures to correspond with the printed Book'. The references to the supplement '(Att[odiad]'), however, do not correspond to the 1832 edition or, in every case, to the second edition, which is fuller. The numbers in the index of first lines refer to the pages in the manuscript volume.

Catalogue of additional manuscripts,

A small group of loose sheets which accumulated during the preparation of J. H. Davies, The National Library of Wales. Catalogue of Manuscripts. Volume I. Additional Manuscripts in the Collections of Sir John Williams, bart G.C.V.O. (Aberystwyth, 1921). They consist mainly of a draft of the 'Introduction', material towards the 'Cross-Reference Numbers' to the Phillimore MSS and Phillipps MSS, one holograph and three autograph letters, 1921, from John Ballinger, National Library of Wales, and 'Queries for Mr Ballinger'.

Catalogue of additional manuscripts,

A catalogue compiled by J. H. Davies of NLW Additional Manuscripts 1-408 (also referred to in these descriptions (which are on loose sheets of paper) as Llanstephan MSS 201-469 and Williams MSS 470-610). Enclosed is a letter, 13 October 1919, from John Ballinger, Librarian of the National Library of Wales, to J. H. Davies relating to the catalogue (see J. H. Davies, The National Library of Wales. Catalogue of Manuscripts, Volume I Additional Manuscripts in the Collections of Sir John Williams ... (Aberystwyth, 1921)).

Catalogue of books,

A catalogue of books, with suggested prices, submitted to Sir John Williams, c. 1897, by Egerton Grenville Bagot Phillimore. The books are mainly in Welsh or other Celtic languages or relate to Wales and other Celtic countries. There are notes relating to many of the books, mainly describing their condition and whether Sir John Williams already had a copy. Inset is a letter, 25 April 1907, from J. Kyrle Fletcher, Newport, Monmouthshire (books for sale and the writer's own interest in books).

Catalogue of books,

A notebook containing a catalogue of books belonging to [the Reverend] Edward Jones, Aberystwyth (d. 30 August 1860), 1848 (a few of the books were published after 1848), with lists of books given by him to his friends and a list of books given by Mrs Jones to her friends, 1862. There are also some later entries, 1887-8, not necessarily connected with Edward Jones.
