Davies, J. H. (John Humphreys), 1871-1926

Cydgordiad Beiblaidd,

A holograph concordance of the Bible by Robert Roberts ('Y Sgolor Mawr'). Several leaves have been cut away, and the early part of the volume has subsequently been used as an album for press cuttings relating to the disestablishment of the Church in Wales and to Mr Gladstone's electoral reform. Beginning from the end is a list of floruits, and in some cases of the works, of mediaeval Welsh bards.

Cyfansoddion Barddonol ...,

A composite volume containing poetical compositions in strict and free metre by, and in the autograph of, Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'). The wording on the title-page of the first part of the volume is 'Cyfansoddion Barddonol gan Ebenezer Thomas, Clynnog. 1843' but some of the items in the section are later than this date. The remainder of the manuscript appears to consist of two other sections, the one containing miscellaneous poems, some dated, c. 1833-60, the other containing 'Y Cleopiad', 1847, and a number of 'englynion'. Alterations and interlineations have been made in some of the poems. Besides the Welsh poems - many of which, though not all, are included in Gweithiau Barddonol, &c. Eben Fardd [?1873] - the volume contains a few items of English verse. There are also one or two printed items, including a sheet of harvest hymns entitled 'Hymnau Cynauaf' by Ebenezer Thomas, 1843 (Caernarfon: Argraffwyd gan James Rees).

Cyfarchiadau Undodaidd,

An early nineteenth century manuscript containing two Unitarian tracts entitled respectively 'Cyfarchiad At Aelodau yr Eglwys Sefydledig ac at Drindodiaid Protestanaidd yn gyffredinol Lle yr annogir ac y cynghorir hwynt I droi oddi wrth Gau-addoliad tri o Bersonau I addoli Yr Unig Wir Dduw' and 'Ail Gyfarchiad At Aelodau yr Eglwys Sefydledig ac at Addolwyr tri Pherson ac un Duw, O Bob Enw'.

'Cyfeillgarwch',

An exercise-book uniform with the previous manuscript (Cwrtmawr MS 566B) containing an essay (29 pp.) on 'Cyfeillgarwch' ['Friendship'] subscribed 'Ioan Aurenau', followed by press cuttings on the same subject [? in the autograph of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd')].

Cyfeiriadau Ysgrythurol,

An early nineteenth century volume containing tabulated Biblical references arranged under such subjects as 'Ynghylch yr Ysgrythyrau', 'Am y Drindawd', 'Am Briodoliaethau Duw', 'Yn nghylch Ordinhadau Duw', 'Yn nghylch Gweithredoedd Duw', 'Yn nghylch Cwymp Dyn', etc. Subsequent additions include 'Ychydig Bennillion' ( i.e. a hymn by T. Jones), a transcript of a letter from Evan Harries (formerly of Llandovery) from Calabah Island, near Bombay to David Davies [Congregational minister], Swansea, 1805 (the writer's activities with the Regiment, the writer's religious experiences, greetings) (together with verses by the writer entitled 'Cyngor i Bregethwyr ieuaingc'); expository notes on 'Prynedigaeth', 'Perseverance of the Saints', 'Schism', 'The excellency of the Bible' and 'Astonishing Accuracy of the Bible'; and catechisms on 'Gwir Wybodaeth', 'Am Lygredigaeth Tafod' and 'Am Gyfiawnder Ymarferol'.

Cyfrifon Cofiant David Rees,

An account book of the Reverend J. M. Griffiths, Goginan, Cardiganshire almost entirely containing particulars of sales of his book Cofiant a Dywediadau ... David Rees (Dolgellau, 1910). Inset is a letter from Evan Daniel, Holborn Circus, London to J. M. Griffiths, 1910 (ordering a copy of the Cofiant).

Cyfrinach Beirdd Ynys Prydain,

An early nineteenth century text of 'Cyfrinach Beirdd Ynys Prydain', being probably a transcript, with orthographical variants, of NLW MS 122, which in turn was transcribed in 1801-2 from the holograph text of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') contained in Llanover MS E 15 (NLW MS 13177). Pasted on one of the fly-leaves is a transcript of the memorial inscription [at Llansilin], 1826, of the Reverend David Richards, Llansilin. Inset is a drawing of Darowen church, 1835. Watermark: 'Harris 1811'.

Cyhoeddiadau John Ross,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a list (imperfect) of publications, 1765-88, printed by John Ross of Carmarthen.

Cylchgronau yn llyfrgell Cwrtmawr,

A volume containing a list of holdings of Welsh periodicals and some periodicals of Welsh interest in the Cwrtmawr Library. The entries have been compiled largely by J. H. Davies but some of the titles are in the hand of T. I. Ellis.

Cynnwys llawysgrifau barddoniaeth,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies, Lincoln College, Oxford, 1893, containing a calendar of Welsh poetry in Jesus College (Oxford), Peniarth, Mostyn and other manuscripts.

Cywyddau, etc.

An imperfect composite volume written in a number of hands but mainly in a late sixteenth century hand. The following note by J. H. Davies is written on one of the upper fly-leaves: 'This MS is supposed to be in the hand of Sion Brwynog (see Cwrtmawr MS 11.493). It was copied by the Rev. David Ellis, then of Amlwch in 1777 and was then perfect. The copy is now MS 11 in my collection'. This supposition cannot be correct since Siôn Brwynog died in 1562 and some of the poems were composed after that date. The hand also differs from that in Peniarth MS 61 which J. Gwenogvryn Evans tentatively attributed to Siôn Brwynog (See also Eurys I. Rowlands 'Llaw dybiedig Siôn Brwynog', Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru (The National Library of Wales Journal), Vol. VII, pp. 381-2). The volume contains 'cywyddau' and a few 'awdlau' by Mathew Bromffild, Tudur Aled, Jhon Brwynog, Lewys Mon, Jhon Tudur, Rys Goch Glynn Dyfrdwy, Morys ap Ieuan ap Einion [Morus Dwyfech], Gwilym ap Sefnyn, Gvttor Glynn, Howel Reinalld, Wiliam Llyn, Lewis Daron, Dafydd Pennant, Roger Kyffin, Gwilym ap Ifan Hen, Gvttvn Owain, Cynwig ap Dafydd Goch, Owain ap Ll[ewelyn ap y] Moel, Rys Goch yr Yri (Rys goch ap D'd), Robin Ddv Fardd, Tudur Penllyn, Rys Pennarth, Lewys ap Edwart, Lewys Daron, Lewys Menai, Robert Ifans, Lewys Morgannwg, Owain Waed Ta, Gruff. Gryg, Iolo Goch, Grvffydd Llwyd ap D'd ap Einion and Hvw Pennant; English verses by J[o]hn Powell and Hu: Powell; etc. There are marginal and other annotations by William Maurice, Cefn-y-braich, ?William Wynn, Llangynhafal and David Ellis, Cricieth, and a transcript by the latter of the greater part of the volume forms Part II of Cwrtmawr MS 11. Some of the pages which have been repaired have also been made up by a later hand and the ink in these portions has faded badly. One page of the volume has been made up by J. H. Davies. The spine is lettered 'Llyfr Kywyddau'.

D. Silvan Evans papers,

(I) Miscellaneous press cuttings, 1860-94 and undated, kept by D. Silvan Evans and including Welsh poetry, correspondence ('Ieithyddiaeth', etc.), church affairs (account of a Welsh confirmation at Llanover by the Right Reverend the bishop of Llandaff, [?1888], an article doubting the need for a new church at Aberystwyth [1882] etc.) and obituary notices of Edward Breese, Morva [sic] Lodge, Portmadoc [1881] and Morris Jones, 'Meurig Idris', 1875. (Ii) A bibliography of Cardiganshire parishes written on slips of paper.

Daearyddiaeth Ysgrythurol, etc.

An uncovered home-made notebook of Morris Davies, Portmadoc (afterwards of Bangor) containing a synopsis of an essay on the topography of the Bible ('Daiaryddiaeth Ysgrythyrol') and a catechism ('Holwyddoreg') in verse by R. D. M. (published in Cronicl yr Oes, Ebrill 1836). The volume is made up of holograph letters, of which some are addressed, and probably all are written, to Morris Davies from D. Breese, Pwllheli, 1841 (a request for assistance for Mr. Row[lands]), Dav[id] W. Breese, Bron Eryri, etc., 1844 and undated (2) (the writer's journey to Carmarthen, personal, an offer to sell his 'Chambers's Information' [for the People] to the Portmadoc Reading Society), Messrs Parry & Son, Chester, [18]46 (an order by the recipient), J. Williams, T. Bwlch, [? John Williams, Tu hwnt i'r bwlch] undated (thanks for an account, a request for assistance), John Jones, Tremadoc, 1845-7 (2) (a request to cancel a preaching service, a request for the services of a preacher) and Griff. Jones, P[ort] Madoc, undated (2) (a request for letters to be sent, personal, suggests recipient cancels the afternoon school to go to Penmorfa fair to see his cousin and as many of the Guardians as would be there); a statement of quarterly tuition fees due from H. Hughes, in respect of Love Hughes and Llewelyn Hughes, to the Committee of the Tre and Port Madoc British School, 1846-7; twelve verses by 'Yr hen gyfaill' entitled 'Deuddeg Penill ar Farwolaeth Mr Morris Davies' (1876).
