Sermons, etc.

A composite volume containing sermons, extracts or 'hints' from sermons (taken partly from a sermon by Mr [Daniel] Rowland), a hymn and a holograph elegy [by the Reverend Edward Matthews, Ewenny] written on the dorse of an invoice to him, 1888, for the purchase of a printed book.

Sire Hippolite [etc.],

Only the cover bears the title 'Sire Hippolite', the main contents of the volume being: 'Epitre a Horace [Walpole]' and 'Le "Lutrin" refondu', i.e. 'Le Lutrin' of Boileau 'new cast' by Thomas Powell, 1807. Between these are items of verse, etc. and (in another hand) 'Discours a l'occasion du Lutrin de Boileau a notre Facon, refondu'. There is also a holograph letter in French from L'abbé de Lévizac, 'Londres ce 23 juin 1806' to Thomas Powell, Esq. 'At Tom' Coffee-house, Cornhill'.

Sources of manorial history, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing notes of lectures, 1900-01, on sources of manorial history; together with some additions on palaeography and the 'character' of Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Norman records, and on Old French syntax.

South Cardiganshire presbytery deeds, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an incomplete (Aberayron - Capel y Ffynnon) list of deeds of churches in the South Cardiganshire [Calvinistic Methodist] Monthly Meeting, 'now in the safe at Shiloh Chapel [Aberystwyth] Oct. 25, 1902'; a list of Welsh books arranged in numbered parcels (e.g. A1-23, etc.), and a list of books sent to Speakman, 91 Islington, Liverpool, April 1920.

Strata Florida rent roll,

A notebook containing extracts transcribed by J. H. Davies (a) 'from a Translation of Rent Roll for the Manors &c of the monastery of Strata Florida' [see Cwrtmawr MS 873D] and (b) from a copy of the defendant's answer, 14 May 1743, in a lawsuit between Dorothy, Lady Lisburne, and Wilmot (Vaughan), Viscount Lisburne, containing lists of rents and tenants' names. The original of (b) is inserted loose in the notebook (pp. 1-2 wanting) and there is also a letter to J. H. Davies from Herbert M. Vaughan, Llangoedmore, Cardigan, who was the owner, it seems, of the document. Also within the notebook are observations by S. M. P[owell] headed 'Pant. Tregaron' and beginning 'Some things struck Mr Lloyd and myself in reading your notes.'.

Subscribers to Enwogion Llŷn,

A list of subscribers to a proposed biographical dictionary by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') entitled Enwogion Llŷn [see Cwrtmawr MS 559]. The names are partly autograph and partly in the hand of 'Myrddin Fardd'.

Subscribers to the Morris letters,

A register in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a list of subscribers to individual parts of the writer's edition of The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). Inset is a rough list of outstanding subscriptions, 12 November [19]16.

Subscription notebook,

Notebook containing a list of names and addresses, with a letter at the end appealing for a subscription. A similar letter in Welsh is pinned inside the front cover.

Sunday lectures,

A volume containing nineteen Sunday lectures for children, of which seventeen were originally delivered between 27 March 1842 and 10 July 1843 and seven repeated during January and May 1855; together with a few notes on the structure and the furniture of 'The Tabernacle'.

Taicroesion Pedigrees,

A volume containing a late nineteenth or early twentieth century transcript of the Taicroesion Pedigrees, described on the title page as 'A most valuable copy transcribed by a Solicitor and examined and compared with the original, so it is the most reliable copy extant'. There are, however, some errors of transcription and some additions. There is a table of contents at the beginning and the pedigrees are followed by a list of the names of the high sheriffs for Caernarvonshire, 1540-1796, written in a different hand.

Tarian Rhyddyd ...,

A small notebook probably in the autograph of the Reverend Hugh Pugh (1803-68), Mostyn inscribed '"Tarian Rhyddyd" &c. Novr. 1838' and containing minutes, November 1838 - July 1839, and a list of co-proprietors in connection with Tarian Rhyddid, a Dymchwelydd Gormes, a monthly publication, the first number of which appeared in January 1839. The 'Reverend H. Pugh' is named as secretary and the Reverend W[illia]m Rees as editor. At the reverse end of the volume are some sermon notes.

Teitlau baledi

Two notebooks containing transcripts of titles of Welsh ballads ('Hen Faledau Cymraeg') contained in Books I - IV of 'Llyfrau Cerddi' in the collection of W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd'), 1896. There are some annotations, partly in the hand of J. H. Davies, and in the majority of cases the corresponding numbers in J. H. Davies: A Bibliography of Welsh Ballads ... (London, 1911) have been inserted.

Teitlau llyfrau, etc.,

An exercise book in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a list of sixty Welsh books, 1786-1902 and undated, in the possession of Evan Jones ('Wrtydyn') [of Llanwrtyd] and transcripts, with some annotations, of titles of Welsh elegies, mainly of Welsh Baptist interest, 1784-1832 and undated.

Telyn y Cyssegr,

A volume entitled 'Telyn y Cyssegr. 1851', being a collection of hymns and religious poems, including translations, by D. Silvan Evans. Many of the compositions were published in D. Silvan Evans: Telyn Dyfi (Aberystwyth, 1898).

A composite volume largely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing transcripts of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Guto'r Glyn, Gutyn Owain, Sion Tudur, Dafydd ap Gwilim, John Rhydderch ('or Amwythig'), Tudur Aled, Lewys Môn, Owain Gwynedd and Wiliam Lleyn; 'Cedymdeithyas Amlyn ac Amic' (from the Red Book of Hergest), with notes and extracts on 'The Legend of the two faithful Brothers', 'englynion', etc. by [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Hugh Evan ('Hywel o Eryri'), Rowland Hugh ('o'r Graienyn, Bala') and [John Jones] ('Tegid'), occasioned partly by bardic controversies at eisteddfodau held at Corwen and Bala in 1789 (extracted partly from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh); 'Ystoria Charles' (from the Red Book of Hergest); 'Cân am Orthrymderau'r Cymry' by Siencin Lygad Rhawlin (c. 1695) (transcribed 24 June, 1880, from Llanover MS[c]40 i.e. NLW MS 13127, pp. 399-401, and printed in Y Genhinen, 1883, pp 135-6); 'Marwnad y Tri Morwr o Aberporth -- ' by Evan Thomas Rhys; 'Hen ddywediadau neu ddiarhebion Cymreig'; an English translation by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') of 'Canu i Ddewi' by Gwynfardd Brycheiniog; etc. The spine is lettered 'Gwaith G. Testunau Cymraeg yn llaw W. H. Mounsey, etc.

A composite volume of the period c. 1869-70, almost entirely in the hand of W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey and containing miscellaneous extracts and fragments of transcripts of literary and historical texts, with copious annotations by the scribe. Among the contents are a collation of the printed text of Y Marchog Crwydrad (Y Brython, 1862, pp. 1-17, 138-52, 257-67, 361-74) with the text of Llanstephan MS 178; 'Iolo Morganwg's opinion of Lewis Morris'; an Irish-English glossary (part of letter A, 4 pp.); 'Prophwydoliaeth y Ddau Fuddugoliaeth a gant Hwch y Maran', with an English translation; 'Stabat Mater', with an English translation; 'englynion', 'cywyddau', etc. from a variety of sources, such as 'Llyfr Hir' and 'Llyfr Du' and manuscripts of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') and David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), 'Llythyr at Dafydd Jones [Trefriw]' from John Pywel, Rhyd Eirin, Llansannan, 1766; etc. The spine is lettered 'Welsh Miscellanea - W. H. Mounsey'.
