A composite volume written almost entirely in the autograph of Evan Prichard ('Ieuan Lleyn' or 'Bardd Bryncroes'; 1769-1832), with some additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is in two parts, the first part (pp. 1-198) containing poetry mainly by Ieuan Lleyn, with some items also by John Jones, Glan y Gors (beginning wanting), R. Ll. Ddu, Cyllidydd, Pwllheli, 1821, Morrus Dwyfech alias Morrus ab Ifan ab Einion, Owen Gruffydd, Thomas Glyn Llifon, Rich[ar]d Hughes, Cadwaladr Cesail, Sion Roger, D. Drefriw and G. Felyn, y Parchedig Evan Evans 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir', Rod. Jones y Crydd, Dafydd Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Rhobyn or Bettws [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], W[illia]m Llyn, W[illia]m Thomas y Llongwr, Ebeneser Tomas neu Cybi Eifion, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', and [John Roberts ] 'S[ion] Lleyn'. Other items in the first part include a draft of a letter, undated, from Evan Pr[ichard] [i.e. 'Ieuan Lleyn'] to an unnamed correspondent (p. 89) (a request for [the mastership of] the free school belonging to the parishes of Rhiw, Bryncroes, Aberdaron and Llanfaelrhys if W[illia]m Owen is turned out), a (?)copy of a letter, 1791, from Ieuan Rich[ar]d, Ty Mawr to an unnamed correspondent whom he addresses as 'Enwog Fardd' (p. 95) (he was unable to attend the Eisteddfod held at Llanrwst; verse in strict and free metre), a (?)translation of a speech by Mr Hodgins [sic], an operative cotton spinner, respecting the Combination Laws, and a speech in Welsh on freedom ('From Walter Davies's Essay [Rhyddid (1791) ]'). The pages following (i.e. 191-8) appear to be in the autograph of John Roberts ('Siôn Lleyn'). Between part I and part II are some items (press cuttings, poetry, etc.) inserted by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), including 'Gwaith Siarl Marc'. Preceding a number of blank pages are two letters from Ieuan Lleyn to Siôn Lleyn, the one undated (?copy), the other written in 1791 from Ty Mawr to Mr John Roberts at Rhyd y clafrdy, Lleyn, containing lines in the 'cywydd' metre by 'Ieuan Fardd Bryncroes' (another of the bardic names used by Ieuan Lleyn). Part II is in three sections, the first consisting of 90 pp. and containing poetry by Gronwy Ddu o Fôn, Robert ab Gwilym [Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu')], Llanystumdwy, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ab Daf. ab Ieuan ab Rhys, W[illia]m Lleyn, Rhys Llwyd ab Rhys ab Ricart, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Tudur Aled, H. ab O. Gwynedd, John Fychan o Gaergai, Thomas Llwyd or penman, M.D.(qr. There are copies of the Lord's Prayer and the Apostles Creed in Breton and Cornish on pages 34-6. This section was written c. 1797-99 at Llangian and at Llanddeiniolen, where it was completed 31 May 1799 (p.90). Part IIb comprises 38 pp. and contains poetry by Ieuan Lleyn, Huw Ifan Gynt o Lanllyfni alias Hywel Eryri, y Parchedig Evan Evans alias Ieuan y Prydydd hir and W[illiam Evans or Fedw arian, preceded by a list of contents. The final section (pp. 11-54) contains poetry by Siôn Dafydd Laes (John Davies alias Penllyn), Lewis Owain o Dyddyn y Garreg, Syr Rhys or Drewenn, Gutto Glynn, S[ion] Tud[ur], D. Gwilym [Dafydd ap Gwilym], Griffith Philyp 'o Ardudwy y' Meirion', Daf[y]dd Thomas alias Daf[y]dd Ddu or Eryri, Ieuan Deulwyn 'o blwyf Pendeulwyn Gerllaw Cydweli Caerfyrddin', Lewis Glyn cothi, Thomas Prys P[la]s Iolyn, Tomas Derllys 'am a wn i' and Rhys Ednyfed, followed by a sketch of a ship ('Debora'), verses entitled 'Brynau [sic] Iwerddon', etc. and 'Sylwiadau ar Wneuthyriad Dyn'. A composite volume from the collection of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') written in several hands of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and comprising ten main sections: (I) The first section (pp. 1-121 and some unnumbered items) contains poetry by Tomas Edwards Nant, S[ion] Owen, [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn Eifion' [sic] and (mainly) Robert Williams ('Robert ap Gwilym Ddu'), some possibly in his autograph. Other items include a list of books ('Catalek of all ye books that I Have'), some accounts headed 'Cost Capel garn talwyd' and 'heb Daly am Capel garn', observations entitled 'Lwybr Dyn neu Ysdyriaethau ar bedair rhan oes Dyn' by Robert Williams, a letter, 1845, from Ellis Owen, Cefn y Meusydd, to Mr Robert Williams, Bard, Bettws fawr, Llanystumdwy, containing verses by Robert ab Gwilym Ddu entitled 'Pererindod o'r Aipht i Ganaan; and a list of poems by ['Robert ap Gwilym Ddu']. There are also some press cuttings and other additions by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). (Ii) A memoir of David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') by and in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion'). (Iii) Miscellaneous items including 'Pymtheg Llwyth Gwynedd', poetry by Huw Llwyd Cynfal, Dafydd ap Sion and y Parchedig Mr Goronwy Owen o Fôn, and draft of a letter from 'Dyngarydd' [?David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion') ] to Mr Gomer' [? for Seren Gomer ], and 'A Memorandum Book' in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') containing notes on natural history, etc. in English transcribed from various printed sources. (Iv) Notes in Welsh in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') on theological subjects including extracts from 'Patrick's Places' i.e. the work of Patrick Hamilton, followed by short accounts of Phoenicia, Palestine, Assyria, Babylon, etc. (V) An incomplete poem entitled 'Carol Plygain am Bwrcas Crist tros eu [sic] Ddyweddi ...... (Vi) Two items in the autograph of John Thomas ('Siôn Wyn o Eifion') entitled 'Cyfrifiad byr am amryw o enwau neu Sectau a ymddangosasant yn y byd' (? incomplete) and 'Ateb i rai holiadau, mewn Llythyr oddi wrth yr Ysgrifennydd at ei ewythr John Roberts', which last item includes observations by Michael Roberts on one of the questions. (Vii) This section consists of sixteen pages and one loose folio. The first fourteen pages are in the autograph of William Elias, c. 1731-44, and contain poetry by Evan ap Llywelyn Vychan (beginning wanting), D. Parry, William Elias, J. Rhydderch, Owen Griffiths and D[afydd] N[anmor]. The next two pages contain verses in English by Gr: Lloyd and the loose folio contains 'englynion', one by Moris ap Evan ap Dafydd ['Morus Dwyfech']. A note at the foot of p. 9 reads 'Oed ein harglwydd, pan dorwyd, y ffordd y mynydd Bwlch Derwin gynta, 1739, y rhan isa, ai gorphen: Mehefin 18: 1740: Wm Ellias, a Griffith Davidd o fodychen, overseers', and there is a recipe for making ink on p. 10. (Viii) 'Englynion' by Edward Charles and a number of Welsh hymns (author's name not given). (Ix) This section is in the autograph of John Roberts [?'Siôn Lleyn'], 1767, and contains poetry by Roger Thomley, Michel Prichiard, Sion Thomas Bod-edern, Gwen Arthur, William Elias, Owen Griffith, John Philip, John Roberts, Hugh Roberts, Thomas Jones, Rich[ar]d Parry niwbwrch, ? W. Ell... and John Rogar [sic]. (X) Veterinary and other recipes, mainly in Welsh.

A notebook containing 'Plans of British Camps, Tomens, Cromlechs & Meini Hirion in the district of Lleyn and Eifionedd, from Beddgelert on the East to Aberdaron on the West, in the county of Caernarvon by J. G .Williams, Penllyn, Nr Pwllheli', 1872. The volume contains plans of hill forts with explanatory notes, descriptions of cromlechs and descriptions and sketches of meini hirion. Inserted at the beginning is a 'Map [with key] showing the positions of the British Camp [sic] etc. In the District of Lleyn Caernarvonshire'. J. H. Davies has given cross-references to BM Add MS 28860 (which is in the same hand but is dated 1871) and Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1903, p. 251.

A small account-book containing a transcript of manuscript autobiographical material of Richard Robert Jones ('Dic Aberdaron')(cf. NLW Deposit 324A). Loose in the volume is a note from John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), Chwilog to a Mr Davies enquiring about its price as everything relating to 'Dic Aberdaron' is valuable to him. At the reverse end are notes by D[avi]d Davies [cf. Cwrtmawr MS 519], who may be the transcriber of the Dic Aberdaron material. There are also some verses said to be by Josiah Hughes, Trefynon [sic] and John Elias, Môn written in another hand and pasted into the volume.

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters, Rhagfyr 20fed. 1856' (i.e. 'Ioan Pedr' (1833-77)) containing diary entries, 20 December 1856 - 13 February 1857 (observations on weather conditions, reading, etc.), translations from Latin authors, and notes on chemistry. At the reverse end are lists of members [? of the Independent church] at Bala, 1870 and possibly earlier.

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala, 1861' containing outlines of sermons, 1862-5, some fuller than others. In some cases only the subject and the text are given.

Two notebooks in different hands, each containing a sermon. One of the sermons was preached at Llandeilo, 1752, at Aber[nan]t in 1758 and at Cynwil [?Elfed] and Newchurch in 1758. Accompanying the sermons is a holograph letter from J. B. Jones, Abernant, Talog Road, Carmarthen to Miss [ ] Williams, 1914 (enclosing an extract from the vestry book, 1746, admitting Peter Williams to read prayers and to preach at Abernant parish church).

'Darlith ar y Profion Hanesiol o Awduriaeth a Throsglwyddiaeth Llyfrau y Testament Newydd ... ', being a holograph draft translation by Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), 1854, of S. P. Tregelles: A Lecture on the historic evidence of the authorship and transmission of the books of the New Testament (London, 1852).

A manuscript lettered 'Reliquiae Lhuydianae', being a composite volume partly in the hand of Edward Lhuyd (1660-1709). It contains accounts [1693] of 'L[l]yn yr Afangc' and 'Crigcaeth', published, with English translations by the Reverend Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau (who then owned the texts) respectively under the titles 'The Legend of Llyn yr Afangc' and 'Legends of Wales' in The Cambrian Journal (1859), pp. 142-150, 208-16, and reprinted respectively under the titles 'Chwedl Llyn yr Afangc' and 'Chwedl Crigcaeth ac eraill' in the Transactions of the Liverpool Welsh National Society, 1895-6, pp.99-105, 105-112; 'The names of Pools or Ponds in Merionethshire' and the names of pools in 'Angleyshire' [Anglesey] (Llyn Maen-meudwy, Llyn Coron) and Caernarfonshire (Llyn Drothwch) with a few notes relating thereto; notes on stones in Inisowen (Ynys Owen), co. Dunegall (Donegal); 'Responsa G. R. ad Quaestiones Dmi' E. Lh.' (an account of Snowdonia), 1693, and notes on urns and stones in Caernarvonshire and elsewhere, published in Archaeologia Cambrensis, 1860, pp. 237-40. An English translation of the account of Snowdonia has been published in Frank Emery, 'A new account of Snowdonia, 1693, written for Edward Lhuyd', The National Library of Wales Journal, XVIII, pp. 405-17, where it is suggested that 'G. R.' was William Rowlands, later vicar of Conwy.

A volume of typewritten transcripts of 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by William Lleyn, David Lloyd ab Hugh, John Vaughan, William Phillip, John Mawddwy, Richard Philip, Sion Tudur, H. M., E. R., Simwnt Fychan, Ffoulk Prys, Sion Cain, R. Ll., Ellis Wynne, Dafydd Hepunt (recte Epynt), Dafydd Nanmor, Sion Philip, Edmwnd Prys and Ellis Rowlant, and anonymous poetry, taken from a manuscript of Edward Griffith, Dolgellau, [NLW MS 2692]; and of a free-metre poem ('Cân Boreddydd') taken from a manuscript of D. Silvan Evans and published in Y Genhinen, Vol. II (1884), p. 78. There is a typewritten list of contents at the beginning and the spine is lettered 'Cywyddau'.

A volume containing holograph poetry by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd') written about 1820 and sent for correction to a mentor bearing the initials 'G. W.' [Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris')], who has made his amendments and critical remarks in pencil. The titles are 'Awdl ... er Coffadwriaeth am y Diweddar ... Charlotte Augusta, Merch Tywysog Cymru ... ', 'Awdl ... yn goffadwriaeth am Y Parchedig Thomas Charles B.A. o'r Bala ... ', and '[Cywydd] y Bedd'. W. J. Roberts ('G[wilym] Cowlyd') has testified (p. 46) that the contents are in the 'undoubted handwriting of 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd''.

A commonplace book of W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd'). The volume belongs to the period 1902-04 and consists largely of copies of letters and some press cuttings relating to the constitution and activities of the Institutional Order of Bards of Gair Ionydd (of which 'Gwilym Cowlyd' was Chief Bard Positive), with special emphasis on the election of Primary Elders, to the request for representation at the coronation of King Edward VIII, and to the election of English bards to membership of the Order. There is also correspondence relating to bardic awards made to [Rowland Williams] 'Hwfa Môn', to protests made by 'Gwilym Cowlyd' against the holding of an organ recital at St Grwst's Church, Llanrwst, and against the renovation of the altar, to a proposed singing festival ('Cymanfa Goffadwriaethol') organised by Llangollen Literary Society in memory of [Evan Evans] 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd', to the acceptance by Llanrwst Urban District Council, as a nucleus of a free library, of the books stored by 'Gwilym Cowlyd' in a separated portion of the cellar at Llanrwst Town Hall, etc. The correspondents include [Rabbi J. Mystic Babylon the Great, The Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth', enclosed in a letter to Joseph Chamberlain, 1903; a list of books and manuscripts of Dd. On the inside upper cover is written in pencil a hymn entitled 'Codiad y Wawr' ('Cydunwn yn awr...'). Watermark: 1826.

A volume (384 pp.) containing notes of sermons. There is no indication of authorship or ownership and no evidence to show when or where the sermons were delivered. At the beginning is a list of contents and on the lower end paper some observations on baptism.

A commonplace book of Aberystwyth provenance attributed by J. H. Davies to his grandfather Robert Davies (1789-1841). It is written in more than one hand and consists largely of maxims and aphorisms of a religious nature, prayers and, especially, abstracts of sermons preached at Calvinistic Methodist Association and other meetings at Aberystwyth, 1825-7 and undated. Watermark: 1814.

A manuscript, profusely illustrated, containing an account of a 'Walk through South-Wales in October 1819' by W[illiam] S[andys] and S[ampson] S[andys], members of a family of London lawyers (see Frederic Boase: Modern English Biography, Vol. III, cols 409-10). The journey comprised Clifton, Aust Passage, Chepstow, Tintern Abbey, Caerleon, Machen, Caerphilly, Pont y Prydd, Merthyr, Pont Neath Vaughan, Cil Hepste, Neath, Briton Ferry, Swansea, Loughor, Llanelly, Kidwelly, Llanstephan, Llaugharne, Pendine, Tenby, Manorbeer, Lamphey Court, Pembroke, Carew, Carmarthen, Lampeter, Tregaron, Strata Florida, Devil's Bridge, Rhayader, Builth, Hay, Crickhowell, Abergaveny, Usk, Caerwent, New Passage (Black Rock) and Clifton. The text comprises a dedication, preface and eighteen chapters. The illustrations consist of engravings (some by Samuel and Nathaniel Buck) and wash and line drawings (largely attributed to W. S. and S. The spine is lettered 'Walk through South Wales, 1819'.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies, Lincoln College, Oxford, March 1892, containing 'penillion' extracted from printed sources ('Jones' Musical Relics, Ysten Sioned, Ceiriog, Mynyddog, Alun, Talhaiarn, Cymry Fu, ... Brython 1859, 255, 288'). The 'penillion' are numbered (1-464) and an alphabetical index of first lines, or first part of lines, is appended.

An incomplete transcript of the first four books of John Fox: Acts and Monuments of the Church (The Book of Martyrs) edition not identified but probably one of the editions published in Black Letter (i.e. up to and including the 1641 edition). The transcript starts with the sixth persecution (reference to folio 85) and ends with the dissension between Pope Gregory and the citizens of Rome (reference to folio 363). The transcriber usually writes 'Reade the Booke' when he omits portions of the text, such as copies of documents, etc., and he refers to the works of John Whitgift and ?T[homas] C[artwright] in the margin in addition to the marginalia and sources copied from Fox's work.
