Sermons,

A volume inscribed 'Evan Rowlands's Book July 9 1827' containing holograph sermons, 1827-30, in Welsh and English by the Reverend Evan Rowlands (1792-1861), minister of Capel Helyg and Rhos-lan Independent churches, Caernarfonshire, 1824-29, and of Ebenezer Independent Church, Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, Monmouthshire, 1829-61. One of the sermons is dated 'at Braech [sic] y saint', another 'Tabor', and two 'Loyds Chapel'. Loose inside are a letter in Welsh, 1855, from E. Rowlands, Ebenezer to John Davies, (?) Cantwr, Silo, Abersychan (concerning the readiness of the Reverend Edward Williams, Dinas Mowddy [sic] to preach at Silo) and a sermon in English in the autograph of the Reverend Ebenezer Jones, Ebenezer, Pontypool, presented to [? John Myrddin Thomas] by Mrs Susanah Morgan, Newport, Monmouthshire, daughter of the Reverend Ebenezer Jones. [The Reverend Ebenezer Jones was the predecessor of the Reverend Evan Rowlands at Ebenezer.].

Sermons,

A volume of Robert Hulet, 1653, containing sermons, together with some early eighteenth century additions.

Sermons,

A volume of eight sermons preached during the period 1735-67 largely at Llangynyw, Montgomeryshire. The manuscript is in the hand of Henry Foulks, who was rector of Llangynyw from 1729 to 1746.

Sermons,

Two volumes of manuscript sermons in English, some preached between 1769 and 1805 at Worcester and the vicinity, Leeds, Hutton, Counde, etc., and a few others of later date, including a charge to churchwardens, 1822, delivered again at Salop and Newport, 1825, and another charge (to clergy) delivered at Salop and Newport, 1823. One of the earlier sermons was preached on one occasion at Hartlebury Chapel, May 26 1771, 'on occasion of taking Priests Orders', and another was preached at Hutton, June 22 1788, 'on Occasion of reading in as Rector', and again at Counde, Feb. 8 1789, on the same occasion [i.e. reading in as rector]. The evidence suggests that these earlier sermons are the work of the Reverend Thomas Goodinge, D.C.L. (1746-1816) [see Shropshire Parish Registers, Diocese of Lichfield, Vol. II, Cound, p. iv, and J. A. Venn, Alumni Cantabrigienses, Part II, 1752-1900, Vol. III p. 84]. The later addresses or sermons are probably the work of Archdeacon Hugh Owen (see Cwrtmawr MS 425B). The volumes are numbered 1-2 on the spine.

Sermons,

A volume of manuscript sermons in English, numbered '23' on the spine. The sermons are numbered 293-302 inclusive and are probably the work of Hugh Owen (1761-1827), archdeacon of Salop in the diocese of Lichfield, 1821-7. One or two of the sermons appear to have been used by another at Wellington and Preston, 1837-40. A line-engraving of Henry Owen, D.D., from The European Magazine, Vol. 28, facing p. 291, appears to be unrelated.

Sermons,

A notebook bearing the name 'John Peters ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala, 1861' containing outlines of sermons, 1862-5, some fuller than others. In some cases only the subject and the text are given.

Sermons of J. Jones,

A manuscript containing holograph sermons, 1820-2, by J. Jones, student at Llanfyllin [Congregational Academy], subsequently at Newtown, Montgomeryshire. Several of the sermons are written in shorthand. At the end of the volume are an index and a list of places, widely dispersed in North Wales, at which the sermons were preached.

Sermons by Matthew Henry,

Two volumes containing 'Sermons By the Rev. Matthew Henry Copied from the original MSS by Henry James Stedman' between 16 October 1823 and 28 January 1824. The sermons bear the general title 'Reasons for Practical Religion' and correspond to the series described by W. Tong in An account of the life and death of the late Reverend Mr Matthew Henry (London, 1716), pp. 175-6, except that not all sermons are to be found in the transcript (see Vol.I, p. 34n.). The introductory sermon is dated May 10 [16]96 and the series belongs to the period 1696-7.

Sermons and miscellaneous papers,

A collection of notebooks loosely sewn together to form a volume containing holograph sermons mainly if not all by the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837), rector of Darowen. With one exception the sermons are in Welsh. A few are dated, 1817-37, and some noted, in pencil, as being preached at Llangynyw or at Darowen, Llanwddyn (one) and Hirnant (cf. Cwrtmawr MS 268B). The miscellaneous papers include an account of the sale of the effects of [? Mr R. Davies], 20 April 1840 (where localities are given for the purchasers they are mainly from the Llanwddyn area in Montgomeryshire), short treatises on Loyalty and Numeration, a printed circular letter, 1870, from the bishop of St Asaph appealing for donations and annual subscriptions to the St Asaph Diocesan Board of Education, a printed list of subscribers, 1847, to the Powis Testimonial Fund, and one verse entitled 'Carol Plygain ar Falldod Dolgellau 1813'.

Sermons and hymns,

A composite notebook bearing on the cover the name of Jeffrey Davies [Tirabad, Brecknockshire], 1822, and 'Llyfr III' and containing outlines of sermons, mainly in English, and a few Welsh hymns, etc. One of the hymns ('O Arglwydd rho dy wyneb cu') appears to be by Jeffrey Davies [the Reverend Jeffrey Davies is referred to in John Hughes, Methodistiaeth Cymru (Gwrecsam, 1856), III, 335 : he was ordained at Cardigan Association, August, 1830 and ordained deacon by the bishop of Llandaff, 7 April 1839. At the time of his death in 1844 he appears to have been curate of Cadoxton, Glamorgan (see D. Rhys Phillips, The History of the Vale of Neath, (Swansea, 1925), p. 83].
