Casgliad o Gerddi a Charolau ...,

A collection of poetry almost entirely in free metres entitled 'Casgliad o Gerddi a Charolau ar amryw Destynau O waith amriw Feirdd Cymru'. The manuscript is in the hand of David Ellis, Cricieth, and was written around 1790-1. The poets represented are Arthur Jones ('Clochydd Llan Gadwaladr yn swydd Ddinbych') (1743-56), Morys Roberts (Bala), Huw Thomas (Llandderfel) (1729, 1752), David Ellis (1757-91), Huw Morys, Ellis Rowland (Harlech), William Wynne ('Person Llangynhafal') (1745), Richard Parry ('Athraw Ysgol yn Niwbwrch'), Ellis Cadwaladr (Edeirnion) (1718), Ellis ab Ellis ('Gweinidog Eglwys Rhos a Llan Dudno') (1683), Iolo ap Ieuan, Edward Morris, Edward Jones (Bodffari), Rhys Ellis ('o'r Waun'), David Jones otherwise 'Dafydd hir o Lanfair Talhaiarn', Griffith Edward, Morgan Llwyd (Maentwrog), Edward Samuel ('Person Llangarw gwyn'), and Evan Herbert ('Gweinidog Llan Illtud a Llan Fachreth'). At the end of the volume is a table of contents ('Cynwysiad y Caniadau') and an index of poets ('Enwau'r Prydyddion ...'). The spine is lettered 'David Ellis MS'.

Llyfr dewiniaeth,

An incomplete manuscript of texts and tables on astrology and witchcraft and medical and other recipes in the hand of 'Dauidd Dafis', 1804. The following are some examples of the titles included in the volume - '... y Deuddeg Arwydd', '[D]rych wynebau', 'Tabl i wybod pa Flauned a Riwlia Bob awr Dros Byth', 'Hyfforddiad i alw Ffasiwn ar ysbrydion a elwir Tylwyth Teg', 'Y Ffordd ar modd I gaul Trysor giddiedig a ffotho wedi Ei gadw oddiwrth iws Dun', 'Ffordd i alw math ar ysbryd a elwir ysbryd Brestt', 'y Ffordd i Ddwad i hyd i Leider a Ddygo Riwbeth oddi arnoch chwi ...', 'ffordd i wneudd Temting Powder i Beri Cariad', 'Dyma Ddeuddeg rhinwedd Croen neider', '... y Graddau', 'Dyma Deyrnasiad y plaunedau', 'Rhod Pithaoras', 'L[l]yfr Ew. Daflus i adnabod Dun wrth i wyneb...', etc. The manuscript is imperfect at the beginning (pp. 1-12 wanting) and probably also at the end (pp. [74] - ). There is a fragment of a late 19th century transcript in the form of an insert, and also three charms in other hands which have been bound into the volume.

Texts for marriage services,

A small notebook intended as a collecting book for a testimonial to the Reverend William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog'), Liverpool containing a printed letter relating to the testimonial inside the cover but no collection entries in the book, which was subsequently used for copying texts suitable for marriage services.

Letter from John Jones ('Talhaiarn'),

A holograph letter, 1868, from John Jones ('Talhaiarn') Hafod y Gân, Llanfair, Abergele to [W. J. Roberts] 'Gwilym Cowlyd' (he is still unfit to attend the whole of the Arwest), and a book illustration of 'Key of Denbigh Castle, temp. Edward 1.'.

The original manuscript, rough page-proofs and revised page-proofs of the 'Bibliographical Appendix' by J. H. Davies to [Thomas à Kempis], Pattrwm y Gwir Gristion o gyfieithiad W. M. A.B., gol. H. Elvet Lewis (Bangor, 1908), and a specimen 'Facsimile of page 1 of Mr P. B. Davies-Cooke's MS'. [i.e. Gwysaney MS 27, NLW MS 17115].

A composite volume made up of copies of Yr Odydd Cymreig, Cyf. 1 (1842), Rhif 2, 3, 4, and articles on 'Llyfrgelloedd ' (Y Traethodydd, 1858-9), 'Y Bardd o'r Nant a'i Waith' (Y Traethodydd, 1875), 'Y Bardd o'r Nant a'r Cerddi Bedydd' (Y Traethodydd, 1876), and 'Sallwyr Cymraeg', a review of Twr Dafydd: sef Salmau Dafydd wedi eu cyfaddasu ar Gân ... gan y Parchedig William Rees, Liverpool (Dinbych: Thomas Gee, 1875), followed by some miscellaneous press-cuttings.

A small notebook containing cuttings of correspondence published in the Aberystwyth Observer, January-June 1889, relating to the desirability of having a 'working man candidate' for the county council election, student behaviour, etc.

Proof-sheets (galley) of parts of J. H. Davies, A Bibliography of Welsh Ballads (1911) viz. 'The Introduction', which differs slightly from the published version, and pp. 161-88, which have been corrected and revised and to which a number of ballads have been added in the published version.

Papurau 'Dewi Fardd',

A volume of papers of David Jones ('Dewi Fardd'; 1708?-85), Trefriw, of which many are in his own hand. Much of the contents of the manuscript was transcribed by David Evans, Llanrwst in Cwrtmawr MS 117.

A notebook of the Reverend Hugh Pugh, Llandrillo and Mostyn containing accounts, 1823-37, and notes of funeral sermons, some preached a number of times, dated 1837-68.

Welsh bibliographical notes,

A small notebook containing notes by J. H. Davies mainly relating to Welsh bibliography but with a few historical and literary notes, some extracted from manuscripts.

Sermons,

Notebooks and loose papers containing notes of sermons by, and in the hand of, the Reverend Hugh Pugh of Llandrillo and Mostyn. Cwrtmawr MSS 985 and 986 appear to have been written during the period 1829-31, when the writer was at Llandrillo, while Cwrtmawr MS 987 was written some time later. There are notes with many of the sermons which indicate that they were later preached a number of times during the period 1837-1868.

Sermons,

A volume inscribed 'Evan Rowlands's Book July 9 1827' containing holograph sermons, 1827-30, in Welsh and English by the Reverend Evan Rowlands (1792-1861), minister of Capel Helyg and Rhos-lan Independent churches, Caernarfonshire, 1824-29, and of Ebenezer Independent Church, Pontnewynydd, near Pontypool, Monmouthshire, 1829-61. One of the sermons is dated 'at Braech [sic] y saint', another 'Tabor', and two 'Loyds Chapel'. Loose inside are a letter in Welsh, 1855, from E. Rowlands, Ebenezer to John Davies, (?) Cantwr, Silo, Abersychan (concerning the readiness of the Reverend Edward Williams, Dinas Mowddy [sic] to preach at Silo) and a sermon in English in the autograph of the Reverend Ebenezer Jones, Ebenezer, Pontypool, presented to [? John Myrddin Thomas] by Mrs Susanah Morgan, Newport, Monmouthshire, daughter of the Reverend Ebenezer Jones. [The Reverend Ebenezer Jones was the predecessor of the Reverend Evan Rowlands at Ebenezer.].

A notebook containing sermons relating to the nature of the church and the ministry, preached by the Reverend Hugh Pugh, Llandrillo and Mostyn at ordination and recognition services, 18[30]-43.

Annerch ir Cymru,

An imperfect copy of an unidentified edition of Ellis Pugh's Annerch ir Cymru [?c. 1750] wanting all before p. v and after p. 94 (although it would appear that only one page [95] is wanting at the end). Also included are three letters to J. H. Davies from John Ballinger, Cardiff, 1900, E. Cartwright, Dowlais, 1896, and S. N. Rhoads, Franklin Bookshop, Philadelphia, 1913, all on the subject of Annerch ir Cymru, and an offprint of an article by Frederick J. Gibbins entitled 'An early American Welsh book' from The Friends' Quarterly Examiner [1902] and given to [J. H. Davies] by the author 'With thanks for kind help'.
