John Griffith to Hugh Leycester, Lincolns Inn, London,

Consulted a barrister 20 years ago about a judge's power to appoint a Receiver of Crown Rents as sheriff. There was no legal objection, but the barrister thought no judge would break the privelege of the Receiver except in extreme necessity. There is no such necessity, since there is no lack of men suitable to be sheriff of the county - the Prothonotary might give a full list if he pleased. Kegs Hl not to insist upon placing Jg 'in an unpleasant office' through an erroneous belief in TG's wealth which Jg denies - 'We country folks can get rid of our money as well as our betters'. The principle of privileges should also be protected. If Jg is made sheriff it will become a precedent for his successors. Ill-health is a personal concern, but many unforeseen events can happen to harrass a Sheriff. Desires Hl to strike him off the List of Sheriffs.

H. Lazenbie, L[incolns] Inn, [London], to John Griffith,

Hl believes the barrister's opinion mention by Jg to be incorrect. Has no reason to doubt he is given a full list of proper persons and would welcome information on the subject. Wishes to do his duty fairly to the public; the recommendation of sheriffs is a difficult task. It would be easier to explain in conversation. Hl has conferred with the chancellor, who confirmed his opinion; he cannot take further steps. Trusts the contingencies alluded to by Jg will not happen.

[Lady Elizabeth] H[arriet] Warren Bulkeley, Staines, co. Middx., to John Griffith,

The high opinion of Jg held by the late Lord Bulkeley, husband of Hwb. Her sufferings in anxiety for her husband for the last 2 years. An account of Lord Bulkeley's death. Proposal to make a bust of Lord Bulkeley, Lord Grenville to write the inscription. She has ordered a monument containing a bust of Lord Bulkeley for Beaumaris Church.
