Cardiganshire 1859 general election,

Original bundle of letters and papers relating to the splitting of the Conservative interest in co. Card. on Ernest Vaughan, 4th earl of Lisburne’s decision not to stand after the next dissolution of parliament, and the campaign to elect Arthur Henry Saunders Davies. Matthew Davies Williams was chairman of Saunders Davies’s Aberystwyth district committee. Also a few letters from William W. E. Wynne, MP, relating to Matthew Davies Williams’s vote in the co. Mer. election.

Papers relating to the Cardiganshire Conservative Association, comprising a printed poster for a public meeting at Aberystwyth town hall to discover the persons who damaged property in the town on the 18th or 19th May 1837, letters relating to the Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire county elections, July 1837, and resolutions of meetings, Feb. 1847-March 1849.

Caron, is threatening against them for non-payment of his fees, both W.E.P. and S.E.W. refusing to pay the said fees because A.T. greatly over-estimated the acerage of enclosed land and, in consequence greatly under-estimated the acerage of mountain land fit only for sheepwalks, 1846; whether W.T.R. Powell is entitled, as life tenant to the Nanteos estate, to cut down and thin woods and plantations upon the estate and whether he can make new plantations, 1855 [cf. CM 22/68]; whether the lessees of Cwmystwyth lead mine can safely surrender a lease of the said mine granted to them for 21 years in 1848 and accept a new lease, 1860; and whether W.T.R. Powell can with safety maintain an action against his tenant David Davies, notice to quit having been served on the said David Davies only, even though the tenants are the said D.D. and his mother Mary Davies, 1866.
