Rentals of miscellaneous estates,

Rentals of miscellaneous small estates, Nov. 1918-May 1931, for which Roberts & Evans were presumably responsible for administering, from parts of substantial estates down to individual properties. Front cover stamped ‘Miscellaneous rentals’. Continued from SA 6/19. Encloses loose papers, 1929-1930.

Instruction books,

Volumes of notes of instructions, mainly relating to conveyances, probates and wills, but also including annulments, contracts, divorces, family disputes, leases, maintenance etc. There are clearly several series of books, eg SB 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, probably relating to the various partners.

At the back of the volume are minutes of (i) court of inquiry re. judgement for the plaintiff in a case of Katie Jones (plaintiff) v. Rhys John Thomas (defendant), living at Llanddewibrefi, for breach of promise to marry, 13 Sept. 1935; (ii) court of inquiry at Aberystwyth town hall, 10 Sept. 1937, in cases of Hannah Jane Evans of Erwllan, Lledrod (plantiff) v. Joseph Jones, and David Davies (plaintiff) v. the same defendant, re. ‘allegations’, the two cases taken together, and the jury awarding Evans £40 and Davies £10; and (iii) minutes of a public inquiry at Llangoedmor school, 3 Dec. 1938, re. a public right of way through fields 280 (Parkydelyn), 282 (Parcylan) and 297, subject to a diversion near the hedge when 282 was ploughed.

I. Melvyn Evans’s instruction book,

Enclosed loose papers include correspondence between Melvyn Evans and B. G. Charles, assistant keeper of manuscripts and records, NLW, relating to the deposit of a grant by Richard de Otherton, co. Worcs, 13 cent., and a lease, one of the parties being Howell and Susan Harris, parents of Howell Harris the Methodist reformer, 1706 (cf. NLW, Trevecca College I/3296?).

Letters,

Original bundle of letters received Sept. 1849, and related papers. Includes a letter from William Roberts in phonetic English describing a ‘veary ruf pasage’ from Cardiff to Southampton, including breaking an anchor in White Sand Bay and picking ‘fore men up at sea ought of a smol bote’ off Cornwall; and several letters relating to Captain Evan Evans and the brigantine Dundonald, detained at New Quay.

Miscellaneous letters, including eight letters relating to the North Hafod Lead Silver Mining Co. Ltd and West Silver Bank, including from William Chambers of Hafod and Matthew Francis, Dec. 1861-May 1862; and eight letters and a memorandum note relating to Captain Richards of Bryneithin and Margaret Morgan of Tretaliesin his alleged mistress, 1872-1873.

Original bundle of letters received and related papers, mainly 1850-1859. Includes the will of Margaretta Jones of Llanbadarn Fawr, 1860; a calendar for the Cardiganshire summer assizes, 1864; an 1864 railway station electric telegraph telegram and envelope; papers relating to Williams v. Morgans, including a notice to Thomas Williams of Penbryn to pull down a cottage at Blaenmarchnant, an alleged encroachment on the sheepwalk belonging to Dderw, p. Ysbyty Ystwyth, 1869; a printed jurors’ list for the Cardiganshire summer assizes, 1869; the will of Letitia Jones of Llanbadarn Fawr, the wife of John Jones, minister of the gospel, bequeathing the monies etc. reserved to her in trust in the will of her sister, Margaretta Jones, dec., 1870; the will of John Morgan of Shifnal, co. Shrop., inland revenue officer; a valuation of the household furniture etc., part of the personal estate of Thomas Bonsall of Glanrheidol, esq., dec., 1876; and fourteen Joseph & Jane Downie’s Bequest lady visitor’s tickets for coal, Dec. 1879
