Letter from Amir Beg Khan,

I have received a man named Mr Halbar Jiv/ Hallier who was involved in a court case of large sum of money with a letter addressed to me. I sent him with one of my chobdars to the guesthouse. A captain who had come from Calcutta imprisoned this man as well as my chobdar and confiscated the letter. It took a lot of convincing before he released them. I will be grateful if you could write to the captain not to interfere in the administration in future.

I would like to bring to your notice that Raja Ram Singh came with his associates to see me and complained that I do not allow my army to provide protection to my Hindu subjects. I replied that I do not consider myself separate from the army of Mir Sulaiman Sahib. At this he asked me to provide him with a contingent of two hundred cavalry and five hundred musketeers. I did not agree to this. He will no doubt write to you complaining. I will request that until I come to see you and explain the matter you delay any answer to that request. Thank you for your letter requesting that in future if the zamindars needed the services of foot soldiers from Calcutta I should write to you in advance. I had already written to Governor Roger Drake that we have an agreement that whenever he wanted to take any action in this area he would write to me first and that he should not send the foot soldiers here on any one else's instructions as they interfere in our administration. It is requested that you also write to the Governor to follow these instructions and that he should come and see us to discuss this. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 217

Thank you for your letter with the good news that two large ships with a large force on board have arrived and some more are on their way. I am sure these will help you to achieve your heart's desires in full. Meanwhile, the letter which Rajah Singh wrote to me is enclosed for your information. -- Enclosure: From Amir Beg Khan to Clive. -- I had earlier informed you about my circumstances in detail. The latest news is that I reached Calcutta with my army on the 15th of Rabi al-Avval, San 5, and went to see Navab Sabitjang, Masih Jang Bahadur and Diwan Nand Kumar. I explained to them my circumstances in detail and sought their advice in paying back the loans I had obtained to pay the government. They have adviced me to settle the loans of the mahajans first. As the repayment of these loans is increasing day by day it is becoming difficult for me to pay the loans back and I seek your help to intervene.
