It mentions also two enclosures [not found], the agents of the French, to his support for Nawab-sahib Shuja` al-Dawlah [i.e. al-Mulk] Mir Muhammad Jafar Khan Bahadur Mahabat Jang [i.e. letter dates from after the Battle of Plassey on 23 June1757], and his need for a bridgade of English cavalry and weapons including a cannon battery.

I have received your request to grant your agent permission to cross our territory with one hundred horses. Your agent who was staying with Mr Preston at the Port of Buxar has been provided with all necessary provisions and asked to stay at the kothi of Katak. Similarly, as a gesture of goodwill, Mr Pleadel [?] who had tried to go through a different and unauthorised route has been forgiven. As Maharajah Januji Bhonsalah is engaged in the suppression of rebellion of indigo and peacock farmers he has instructed to close all borders with other states. These borders will remain closed until the rebellions are completely suppressed. Your agents will then be allowed to move from the port of Buxar and carry on their business as usual. He presented four thousand rupees to him. Pahlwan Singh is managing the affairs of the army. Shivdat Narayan went to see Narobad Singh and asked him to join them. We are still waiting for their arrival. Sunbhal Singh went to the house of Raj Rup and later Pahlwan Singh also joined them. The Prince has five thousand horsemen and many more have deserted him. I am writing to inform you that Nawab Intizam al-Daulah, Mr Saiks [Francis Sykes], has kindly bestowed on me the administration of Chaklah Akbarabad and I was honoured with a Khillat on the 27th of Rabi al-Avval, San 7. I am sending, under a separate cover, a nazr for your honour. -- Enclosure: Twelelve thousand Ashrafi rupees [received as nazrana].

After enquiring about the health and welfare of the recipient Qasim Ali Khan informs that the bearer of the letter was one of his dearest friend and he was coming to see him with the belief that the Navab would do whatever is possible to assist him.

They have sent a force of fifty Tilangas to guard my house. I will be indebted for life if you could help to get rid rid of this force from here.

Memorandum. On the advice of Khvajah Ashraf the following amounts of saltpetre was delivered to the Dutch Kothi on the 27th Rabi` II, reg.yr. 4[i.e. 8 January 1758] (details given).

I hope you have received the account of Mr Barban Sahib/Rajah Debi Singh that I had sent you sometime ago. Following your orders, Raja Debi Singh has been asked to go and see the Nawab Sahib. I hope he will soon be leaving to see him. -- As I have been working for the company for some time and have proved myself a friend and wellwisher of the public and the company I would appreciate if you could issue an official parvanah giving me powers to conduct all business in confectionary, grains and timber in this district.

On Monday the 7th of Safar one of my brother came from Hyderabad and brought me the news that Salabat Jang was staying in Hyderabad. His brother Nizam Ali khan and Nanaji, the son of Raghuji, are encamped at Nirmal near Hyderabad; they are planning to march further from there. This was reported on the 12th of Safar. Monsieur Bhonse is marching towards Phuljari with four or five hundred men, he is accompanied by French forces from Machhli Bandar. They say that Muhammad Ali of Arcott was hand in hand with the English and they believe that they will soon either kill or capture Nizam Ali Khan. Monsieur Bhonse with eight thousand men is stationed near Budapore on the Banks of the Kadavari.

aAfter taking your leave and a long journey I took a boat for Baktarn[?] and from there I departed on Wednesday, 15th Dhu al-Hijjah, reg.yr. 5. As it was raining heavily I was delayed reaching the city and reached Murshidabad when one and four ghari of the day remained. I presented myself at the court of Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur and made a request to see the Nawab. Thank you very much for your reply to my letter regarding the case of Qasim Ali Khan who has been sacked from the administration of Chaklah Rangpore. You have advised that the people responsible for Kothi Qasim should get in touch with Qasim Ali Khan to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, Mr Hastings advised him to come and see me and I was able to help him to get his appointment with the Nawab.

The districts of Salimabad, Sundhargul, Lakhardiya, etc. are part of my state and the cultivation of these lands is in the name of Rajah Lakhi Narayan. Most of your employees who travel between Calcutta and Jahangirnagar pass though these lands and give all sorts of troubles to people living here. In the same way, the employees of the Kothi Lakhi with the help of other people who come here on elephants for their business also disrupt and damage the work of the artisans and businessmen. It is therefore requested that you appoint two companies of guards to protect the two Kothis and the people of these areas.

Assures Clive that he is a loyal friend and is always ready to assist and help Rajah Ram Narayan in Faizabad. He does not agree with Kejraj Singh. He and the aforesaid rajah are dealing with all issues that arise within the boundaries of their district promptly and efficiently.
