I have not received any communication from you for some time. Please do let me know that you are well. I will be going to Akbarnagar on 11th Ramadan and pay my respects at the mausoleum of Hazrat Banduh or Naha [?]. I will be returning to Murshidabad soon afterwards.

The day I reached Tasur Jagdah to see you the same day you had marched towards Murshidabad. I tried to follow you but as you were travelling by boat and I by land route I could not meet you. Now I have returned. Rao Shitab Rai had gone to see the Nawab for some request but, in spite of your recommendations, he has not been able to have any access to the Nawab. I hope you will be able to help the Rao Sahib.

Amir Beg Khan, with your approval, had agreed that after reaching Hoogli he would send all accounts with their papers to me but until now this has not happened. As the financial year is coming to a close, and the payment to staff from the Company are now due, I will be grateful if you could send instructions to the staff at Hoogli, Sulaiman Beg and Basant Ram and Jagan Nath Das, etc., that they should send relevant papers as soon as possible. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no.525.

I have received your letter conveying the good news that a battleship with three hundred soldiers has arrived from Europe as well as informing me that the services of Mr Roger Drake have been terminated and in his place Mr Watts has been appointed as the Head of the Calcutta Council. Since they day you arrived at Murshidabad the chief of traders has two or three times sent me invitations but because of my physical condition I have not been able to avail this oppurtunity and travel to Murshidabad at such a short notice. I am at present feeling very weak and hope that by the time you visit Murshidabad again I will have recovered from my illness and will be able to pay my respects

Thank you for your letter regarding the accusations of Shiv Bhatt against Masalih al-Din Muhammad Khan. The truth of the matter is that Masalih al-Din was appointed to the post of Governorship of Orissa on my recommendation or rather by myself and he has been carrying out these duties for the past two or three years. The province yields twelve Lac rupees as revenue and the aforesaid Khan deposits one fourth of it with Rajah Januji Bhonsalah. He has the receipt signed by Januji in Marathi to prove this. Therefore, I am enclosing copies of these receipts for you to view and see that he is telling the truth. -- Enclosure 1: Impression of the seal of :Qazi Zahid Muhammad Khan, Khadim al-Sahar' al-Mu'tasib bi Allah al-musta'an. States that Rani Burdwan, Tilok Chand's grandmother, lapsed into the pangs of death on the 30th of the Bangla month of As [.e. 22 July]by the banks of the Katak. Shortly thereafter 2 or 3 people saw a star, and some said that she had in truth given up the ghost. Written confirmation, however, has still not been received but, as soon as it did, Clive would be informed. [According to another letter, the death occurred on Sunday 17 September 1758].

I have received the enclosed letter from my friend Khvajah Hadi Khan Bahadur. Please reply to him after reading its contents.

At the time you were engaged in your campaign in Azimabad and had entered Farrah Bagh, Rajah Rasbihari was mismanaging his affairs and the situation has badly deteriorated here. You had complained about this to Rajah Dullabha Ram but the result is that he has now completely withdrawn his hands from this affair and the situation has further deteriorated. I had no option but to appoint Raja Ballabha Ram to the post of Divan on 11th Dhu al-Qa`d, reg.yr. 5 so that he could remedy the situation.
