Departmental committees,

Material relating to cases heard before specific Select and Departmental Committees which were appointed to enquire into a variety of coal industry matters, including the price and availablility of coal, proposed railway legislation, pay and working conditions of miners, and safety conditions in mines.

Disputes Finality Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Disputes Finality Committee, appointed to consider reports made by committee representatives investigating cases of particular disputes at individual member collieries. Material comprises minutes, which include copies of investigators' reports, agenda and meeting notices.

General,

Material comprises bound volumes containing generally, minutes of Council meetings of the Monmouthsire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (MSWCOA); minutes of Joint Committee of the MSWCOA; minutes of Sliding Scale Committee meetings; minutes of the General Meetings of the Steam Collieries Defence Association; minutes of committee meetings of the Durham Coal Defence Association. They also contain circulars calling meetings, notices, bills and newspaper cuttings. See file descriptions for details regarding specific items or topics.

Joint Coal Production Committee,

Verbatim minutes of meetings of the Joint Coal Production Committee. This committee met to discuss and agree measures to increase output at individual collieries and to discourage any restrictions of output. They were mainly concerned with ensuring adequate supplies of workmen, materials, machinery, etc., at collieries; with speeding up disputes and settlement processes; and with submitting timely reports to the South Wales District and National Production Council.

Joint Emergency Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Joint Emergency Committee, which was made up of owners' and workmen's representatives, to consider specific disputes including the strike of 1893 and disputes concerning the Bonus Turn for pieceworkers in 1917. Material comprises minutes of meetings, with some correspondence included.

Joint Sliding Scale Committee,

Material related to the work of the Joint Sliding Scale Committee, comprising minute books of meetings and conferences, auditor's reports, and wage awards. File BT4/1/3 contains accounts of meetings of the owners' represenatatives on the Sliding Scale Committee, and also an account of the meetings which led to the establishment of a sliding scale in 1875. The remaining minute books contain details of the negotiations leading to the establishment of various Sliding Scales, together with summaries of the discussions of routine business and matters in dispute affecting the coalfield as a whole, and records of sub-committee reports. A few termination notices and some news cuttings have been inserted among the minutes.

Subjects covered include general coal and mining issues, market reports, Welsh coal trade reports, accidents, WWII, wages and disputes.

Mineral statistics for the United Kingdom,

Mineral statistics for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland prepared by H.M.'s Inspectors of Mines. The reports and statistics show the average value at the mine and open-cast works; the distribution of certain of the minerals; the production of the blast furnaces; the quantity of coal consumed in making pig iron; the output and value of minerals, persons employed in mines and quarries, and the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents in mines. During the period 1897-1912, part vi of the statistics relate to British colonies and foreign countries.

Mines inspectors reports,

Annual reports of H.M. Inspectors of Mines on coal mines across England, Scotland, and Wales. They are arranged by district and generally contain statistics and reports on fatal accidents; general observations on ventilation and methods of working at the mines; details of equipment used; a list of collieries in the district and their location and owner; and may contain comments and observations on the living conditions of the miners. Districts covered by the reports include the counties of Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, the mining districts of Scotland, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Lancashire, Cheshire, North Wales, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, and South England and Wales.

Mining Association of Great Britain,

Correspondence with the Mining Association of Great Britain relating to the coal mining industry in general, and also relating to specific topics such as pitwood, unemployment insurance, holiday clubs, workmen's compensation, Coal Utilisation Council research, the Welfare Fund Bill, pit ponies, miners' nystagmus, trade union membership, the provision of men and labour during war time, and post-war celebrations. General correspondence files may include not only letters but also memoranda, notes for deputations, and meeting notices, agenda and papers for meetings of the Central, Transport, Joint Standing Consultative, Propaganda, Timber, Wagon, Joint National Negotiating, and Post-War Research Committees.

Minutes of meetings,

Minutes of meetings of the Board of Conciliation for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales. Included in the minutes are accounts of disputes and strikes at various collieries brought to the attention of the Board, and reports of sub-committees appointed to investigate such matters and any final settlements reached. The minutes also include discussions of the Board regarding changes in the general wage rate in the coalfield and decisions of independent chairmen, as well as discussions on other matters affecting the entire coalfield, such as the dates and durations of holidays, concessionary coal supplies, the non-union question, deputations, the settlements of price lists for specific coal seams, and the Eight Hours Act. Also included are meeting minutes and recommendations and resolutions of the Owners' representatives on the Conciliation Board to the Coal Owners Association on a wide range of matters concerning the mining industry in South Wales.
