T. Dewi Jones, Cynfelin, Ffordd Talwrn, Llangefni, Anglesey. The writer served as an independent minister at Llanbedr-y-Cennin and Ro-wen, and, therefore, had an opportunity to take a pride in Huw T. Edwards's progress by serving the principles of the kingdom that is not of this world. Much of Huw T. Edwards's fine work was accomplished in the county which he has adopted. A friend of the writer by the name of David Watcyn is on the short list for the post of Deputy Director of Education for Flintshire. The appointments panel must have already noticed his academic distinctions. The writer would like to emphasise that DW has many other qualifications which qualify him for an administrative post in the educational world. Outlines Watcyn's virtues and fine qualities. He should have a distinguished future as an administrator in the educational world. Welsh.

Gwilym [Prys Davies], Morgan, Bruce and Nicholas, Solicitors, 49 Mill Street, Pontypridd. The writer's wife has given him the good news [of Huw T. Edwards's decision to rejoin the Labour Party]. Is truly glad that Huw T. Edwards is back within the ranks of the Labour Party as his vision is sorely needed. Until six months previously the writer believed that there was a hope of establishing a solid non-political movement, but it is apparent that people are not mature enough for this idea. Therefore resources must be devoted to the Labour movement and make it worthy of their ideals. There is a need to work on the philosophy and the machinery and to build up a Welsh leadership. Welsh.

Sam [? Jones, the BBC], Cyncoed, Meirion Lane, Bangor. Regrets that he cannot be present at the dinner to honour Huw T. Edwards on Friday evening. Does not venture far from his home during the present inclement weather. The precarious state of the writer's health. Is pleased that Huw T. Edwards's friends are acknowledging his priceless work to the Welsh nation in a number of directions. Welsh.

Ifor D[avies], Parliamentary Minister of State, the Welsh Office, 47 Parliament Street, London SW1. Thanks very much for the good wishes. Is looking forward to the work with faith and hope. George [Thomas], MP, Minister of State, Welsh Office, 47 Parliament Street, London SW1. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's good wishes on his appointment as Minister of State at the Welsh Office. It will be of great encouragement to him in the tasks that lie ahead that he has the support of so many friends.

Hugh [ ], Dolwerdd, Radcliffe Road, Criccieth. Understands that Mr Arthur Williams has written to Huw T. Edwards about an honour for Dr O. Lewis Jones. Mr Arthur Jones and Mr W.R.P. George gave the facts to Mr Goronwy O. Roberts, MP, in the last government, and he promised that he would pass them on. As nothing appears to have been done in this matter, the admirers of Dr Jones are anxious to raise it again. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be able to move things in the right direction. Huw T. Edwards is most welcome to drop in if in the vicinity. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will forgive him for writing, but he does feel that Dr Jones deserves some recognition. Gives some family news.

George [Brown], MP, First Secretary of State, Storey's Gate, London SW1. Their present circumstances are, of course, a disappointment, and the writer found that the decision was a difficult one to take. But he feels that this is probably the right place to try to make things better. It was wonderful to hear from Huw T. Edwards.

Goronwy [O. Roberts], MP, Minister of State for Education and Science, Curzon Street, London W1. Thanks for the letter; he would welcome more of them. Will do his best for Hywel. Huw T. Edwards is sorely missed on the Welsh stage, and the agenda is getting bigger all the time. Huw T. Edwards should keep warm, and write him a sonnet for Christmas to raise his spirits! Welsh.

Cledwyn [Hughes], MP, Secretary of State for Wales, The Welsh Office, 47 Parliament Street, London SW1. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's very kind letter. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards thinks that the programme went well. The reports which have come from the Rhondda are somewhat conflicting, but thinks that all will be well. Is hoping to make a helpful statement about Mid-Wales in the Welsh Grand Committee on 15 March. There is a limit to what he can do for economic reasons, but thinks that he is able to make a substantial start. This should be treated in confidence for the moment. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards is better. Hopes to see him soon.

D. J. [Davies], Chairman of the Wales Tourist Board Ltd, 7 Park Place, Cardiff. The Directors at their meeting on 21 July received Huw T. Edwards's resignation with the utmost regret. Realises that taking this step must have been a great wrench for Huw T. Edwards, but realises that he must have good reasons for acting thus. The Directors, therefore, felt that they had no alternative but to accept the resignation. They did so with very great reluctance, and they have asked the writer to convey their regret at the breaking of a link which had meant so much to them. The strength of Huw T. Edwards's feelings is all too apparent in the step which he has taken. The Directors could not, of course, agree with Huw T. Edwards's views, but they retain their personal regard and affection for him, as well as a deep appreciation of all that Huw T. Edwards has done for the Tourist Board. Was sorry to learn that Huw T. Edwards had spent a period in hospital, but is glad that he is now improving. Hopes that they can meet soon to discuss these matters, and wishes him well in the meantime.

Elaine Strachan, Private Secretary to Mrs Eirene White, MP, House of Commons. Mrs White did see Huw T. Edwards's letter to her dated 7 September, but she has since had to go to the Labour Party Conference at Scarborough. Encloses a reply which has been received from the Ministry of Health to which Huw T. Edwards's letter was forwarded (A1/954a). The Government is compelled to restrict the assistance which it can provide because of the economic situation. The writer will show copies of this correspondence to Mrs White on her return from London.
