He was a very gentle man and remained very conscious of his Welshness until the end. Spent most of a morning with Lewis and an hour on the television. He was very sympathetic to the work of Plaid Cymru. Welsh.

Edwards's two letters concerning the possible talk with the PMG. Is not sanguine of securing a voluntary agreement, but has arranged for a meeting during the following week, and will contact Huw T. Edwards or George Thomas, MP, if he feels there is any prospect of a concrete agreement. Much appreciates Huw T. Edwards's support and looks forward to seeing him at the next Board Meeting.

But if the staff of TWW concur in this view, then he would prefer not to appear in any of their programmes or to give them any interviews or comments. Is sorry that he has bothered Huw T. Edwards, but he had felt that Huw T. Edwards would at least treat his complaint with understanding and sympathy.

Cliff Prothero, Hedd Wyn, 67 Wordsworth Avenue, Penarth. Greatly appreciates what Huw T. Edwards has said about the writer's efforts on behalf of the people of Wales. Retirement at the end of the month will be a tremendous wrench, but still hopes to be of service to some good cause. The return of a Labour Government is, of course, especially gratifying to him, and he feels sure that Jim Griffiths and others will keep Wales in the forefront. Has never doubted Huw T. Edwards's true Socialism. They both share the same goals, but have different ideas concerning the means of attaining them. Was glad to see Huw T. Edwards at Harold Wilson's meeting at Shotton just before the election. 'I am convinced that your rightful place is inside the Labour party and not spending your time in a Political Party which appears to be more Anti English than Pro Welsh'. Expects that a number of Welsh nationalists will turn to the Labour Party. Huw T. Edwards is always welcome to call at Hedd Wyn.

Edwin Evans, Lawrenny, Llanon, Cardiganshire. Understands that Huw T. Edwards has met and talked with the writer's sister Peggie and has sent her a copy of his book Tros y Tresi. Peggie worked as a personal assistant at 10 Downing Street, Cairo, New Delhi and the Treasury. She died on 30 November after a long and brave fight against her illness.

Regrets that politics are playing too great a part in such appointments. Archie is, of course, 'an awfully nice fellow', and is sure to do very well. Has cancelled his visit to the Central Council Meeting of the Conservative Party in order to be able to attend the North Wales Advisory Meeting. Would not wish to leave without saying 'goodbye' to the North Wales members. Sends his best personal wishes to Huw T. Edwards.

Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will get well soon and will hasten to the midst of the battle where he is really needed. Welsh.

Cannot himself recall the event, but finds it difficult to understand what could impel a man to write such a thing. The worries are frightening over Malaysia, Rhodesia etc. Welsh.

Cledwyn [Hughes], MP, Minister of State at the Commonwealth Relations Office, Downing Street, London SW1. Is deeply grateful to Huw T. Edwards for his intervention on behalf of the writer. It is extraordinary that anyone has to defend himself against remarks which he is alleged to have uttered thirty years previously when he was at university. Is unable to pay due regard to his favourite subject because of pressure of work. But he feels sure that Huw T. Edwards is right. Hears that Jim Griffiths and Goronwy O. Roberts are doing excellent work, and Jim's good name and the special position which he occupies have been of very great value in the task of establishing the new ministry. Harold Finch, too, as the representative of south-east Wales, has worked quietly and efficiently. The three of them, together with Tudor Watkins, are fine representatives for Wales. It is clear from the most recent ministerial appointments that the Prime Minister has no intention of instituting changes at the Welsh Office for the moment. Would like to meet Huw T. Edwards, when he is next at London, for a conversation. Welsh.

Lord Cohen Of Birkenhead, 31 Rodney Street, Liverpool 1. Is delighted to know that Huw T. Edwards is to be honoured on 10 December. 'There is no honour which you do not merit for the remarkable contribution which you have made to the life of Wales and in the service of your fellow men'. Has a prior engagement for 10 December. He has never regretted missing a dinner more as he would genuinely like to hear the tributes which will be paid to Huw T. Edwards.

Wishes him well for the future. Would he like to travel to Hong Kong? Eirene White, MP, is expected at Hong Kong at the beginning of 1966. Was very friendly with Thomas Jones CH, but has never met his daughter before. The writer looks forward to meeting her, and the Welsh community at Hong Kong are anxious to honour her. Welsh.

A. J. Lush, Chairman of the Welsh Hospital Board, Temple of Peace and Health, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Regrets his inability to attend the dinner to mark Huw T. Edwards's retirement as Chairman of the Wales Tourist Board as he has to be at Oxford. Has asked Provost Trevor Jones to represent him at the function. Huw T. Edwards's period as Chairman has seen a tremendous improvement in the tourist industry in Wales, and this is due in no small measure to his personal efforts. Wishes him well on his retirement.
