When he returns he will know more about his position with the denomination. The Committee which is discussing his case meets at Westminster at 2.30 on Tuesday. Encloses some documents relating to his case. Will be glad to see Huw T. Edwards after he has returned home. Have been very grateful for all Huw T. Edwards's support. Welsh.

T. Wynne Thomas, Chairman of the Sub-Commissioners of Pilotage for the Dyfi (Dovey) District, Trinity House Pilotage Service, Trinity Port of Aberdyfi, Meirion. As he has read in the press that Huw T. Edwards is taking an avid interest in the smaller ports situated on the coast, he sends on a copy of his survey of the one Trinity Port in Cardigan Bay. Hopes that it will be of some value to the sub-committee appointed by the Council for Wales.

T. Wilson on behalf of Frank Brown, Publicity Director of TWW Ltd, Independent Television for Wales and the West of England, 207 Sloane Street, London SW1, to Mrs Betty Williams, Crud yr Awel, Sychdyn, near Mold. Gives an account of the insurance cover arranged for Huw T. Edwards while he is away in Patagonia. If the writer is informed when Huw T. Edwards is coming to London, he will ensure that he has his travellers' cheques as he understands that hotel bills have to be paid right through. Understands that it will be early spring by the time they reach Patagonia, and the writer would be happy to go shopping for any special clothing necessary to guard against any unexpectedly warm weather. Huw T. Edwards might come down to London a day early in any event.

T. Vernon Jones, Ardwyn, Ffordd Seiriol, Penmaenmawr, Caernarfonshire. Many thanks for Tros y Tresi. Admires Huw T. Edwards greatly, although he has not always agreed with him on political matters. Enjoyed reading the book very much, and knew some of the characters. Has found the course of Huw T. Edwards's life an inspiration to him, as it will be to a number of young Welsh people. The writer recently heard the story of Huw T. Edwards's election to the Penmaenmawr Council for the first time. Welsh.

[T.] Stenner [Evans], Senior Administrative Medical Officer, Welsh Regional Hospital Board, Temple of Peace and Health, Cathays Park, Cardiff. Admires the great stand which Huw T. Edwards had made on behalf of Wales. Few people have the 'moral courage' and the 'calm deliberation' which Huw T. Edwards has exhibited. Is proud to be one of Huw T. Edwards's many friends, and hopes that he will continue his work for many years in the future. Is glad that Huw T. Edwards can come to the North Wales Area Committee, the date of which has been changed to 2 December.

T. S. Norton, Secretary and Public Relations Officer of the Wales and Monmouthshire Sunday Opening Council, 7-9 Caroline Street, Bridgend. Wish to congratulate Huw T. Edwards on his resignation as Chairman of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. They were grateful to Huw T. Edwards the previous December for his support for the campaign for the Sunday opening of licensed premises. They feel that they are receiving 'a raw deal' from the Government which is refusing to consider the problem. They believe that the 1881 Sunday Closing Act is 'hopelessly out of date and should be repealed'.

T. Rowland Hughes, 59 Windermere Avenue, Cardiff. Congratulations on Huw T. Edwards's appointment as Chairman of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. He is the ideal choice. Hopes that the strategy of the Labour Party will win the day on the Council under Huw T. Edwards's leadership. Has heard that Huw T. Edwards was responsible for helping to secure a civil pension for him, and wishes to express his thanks. Hopes to be able to thank him personally at Cardiff.

T. Ogwen Griffith, Morlan, 5 Lynton Walk, Rhyl. Found Tros y Tresi really gripping. Huw T. Edwards has the ability to be both educational and interesting. He knew some of the individuals mentioned in the book. The writer's father and the Penrhyn Quarry strike of 1897. Would very much like to meet Huw T. Edwards to discuss some of the people referred to in the book. Welsh.

[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Wales Gas Board, Snelling House, Bute Terrace, Cardiff. Wishes to thank Huw T. Edwards for everything he did for the Wales Gas Board during this the first week of his retirement. 'The depth of your affection, as the height of your enthusiasm, for the Board and all it stands for, was throughout, for it, as for us all, a glorious asset'. Appreciates that the Board was often forced to share Huw T. Edwards's precious time with a great many competing demands. But Huw T. Edwards's loving loyalty was never in any doubt at all. His sensitive kindness to the writer was always especially appreciated. Huw T. Edwards will always be most welcome in future at the congregations of the Wales Gas Board. He is invited to the Cross Foxes, Overton-on-Dee for the evening of Wednesday, 18 September for an informal dinner party. Also wishes to pay tribute to Huw T. Edwards's wife and family. For reply see A2/148.

[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Wales Gas Board, 2 Windsor Place, Cardiff. Does not see that Huw T. Edwards's decision to change his political allegiance should in any way affect his membership of the Wales Gas Board. But the Minister, of course, reserves the right to decide in these matters, and the writer will make informal enquiries to decide whether Huw T. Edwards should send a similar letter direct to the Minister. Feels that Huw T. Edwards's letter typifies his 'open-hearted honesty'. For this reason, a letter to the Minister on similar lines would be appropriate.

[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Dyffryn, Ely Road, Llandaff, Cardiff. Gordon and the writer were both much impressed by the Television Awards Programme the other evening, especially by Huw T. Edwards's part in the programme. Also appreciates Huw T. Edwards's contribution to the success of the parties in North Wales recently. Has seen the copy of the Minister's official letter, and is delighted to know that Huw T. Edwards will continue to serve with the Wales Gas Board. The 'not over 70' rule is currently being strictly enforced on all the boards.

T. Mervyn Jones, Chairman, Wales Gas Board, Snelling House, Cardiff. The writer wishes, on the occasion of his retirement from the Board, to tender his grateful thanks for the friendliness and comradeship of each member and officer who serve the Board from time to time in various ways. The recipient was the ideal leader of the nationalised gas industry within Wales. Regrets that many of his old friends are no longer in the service of the Board. Feels very privileged in the colleagues with whom he has served on the Board. Hopes that he will still be able to attend special occasions as a guest. Written in reply to A1/760.

T. Lloyd Roberts, 23 North Drive, Rhyl. Regrets that he is late in congratulating Huw T. Edwards on his resignation. Totally agrees with Huw T. Edwards's sentiments: 'The Whitehall mind cannot see the point of view of Wales'. Gives examples from his personal experience of the way Wales has been mistreated by Whitehall. The Government seems to have completely ignored the recommendations of the Report chaired by Sir Frederick Rees to which William Thomas acted as secretary. Does Huw T. Edwards recall his meeting with Emrys Pride? Pride was moved to Yorkshire 'to shut him up' because of his repeated demands for the introduction of light industries into Anglesey, Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire. Notes in the press that Huw T. Edwards now lives at Mold, but the writer has a Shotton address for him. Welsh.
