(A manuscript note mentions the first battle [in S. Africa] in which HJE took part).

Records his profits and additions to the Pump House Hotel, Llandrindod; notes (inter alia) that he surveyed Llwyncoliew Farm, Llandrindod in May 1871, valued Cwmyrhiwdre [Mochdre] on the 24 October 1871; surveyed Cwmdeuddwr churchyard on 20 January 1872; made plans of the Mellington Estate and took photographs, 23 March 1872; made plans for proposed alterations and additions at Knill Church, 6 December 1872; was in London on the business of the Llandrindod Land and Building Co. Ltd., from 18 to 26 February 1873l; acted as Returning Officer at Penybont for the election of a Member for Radnorshire, 9 to 12 February 1874; in London on the business of the Worcester and Aberystwyth Railway Co. from 24 to 26 June 1874; his assistant and chainman went to St Harmon on 26 April 1875 to trig out a piece of glebe land for JBE - this preparatory to the building of St Harmon School; SWW had been appointed Engineer of the Erwood Bridge Co., 3 June 1875; A.C. Hedger became his pupil for three years, 24 April 1876; SWW's profits (incl. his £100 county surveyor's salary) amounted to £2,803 (nearly £120,000 in today's values).
