Letters to Mrs H. J. Evans from her husband. (Most of these are letters from the Front, and selected ones are summarised in Trans. Rads. Soc., vol. 73, pp. 178-179. A further article based upon them will appear in a proximate number of the same journal). The wartime letters date from two periods that HJE was serving with the British Expeditionary Force: 14 March-30 May 1916 (1-73) and 5 Dec. 1917-27 Jan. 1919 (76-94). Unfortunately, no letters survive for the time of his heaviest involvement, the Battle for Mametz Wood in July 1916, when HJE was wounded both in an arm and in the head. (Before that, his brigade had been based for some time not far west of Lille).
Notice that Col H. J. Evans was mentioned in a despatch for gallant and distinguished service,
