The Customs of Hereford

A copy of the customs of Hereford as newly written by John Chippenham, mayor of Hereford, in 1486, and exemplified by James Yayden in 1560 (ff. 1-17). Several Welsh Boroughs were granted the privileges of the city of Hereford, and the newly enfranchised corporations applied to the burgesses of Hereford to have their privileges certified to them. This manuscript begins with the answer given to the town of Drusselan in the parts of Wales in the year of Henry son of Henry I [sic], and also contains statements made at the request of the burgesses of Kermerden, Herford and Kardyff. At the end of the volume is a list of the mayors of Hereford from 1383 to 1563 in the original hand, with additions in other hands to 1605 (ff. 18-19 verso).
