Typescript

The file comprises typescript material comprising a complete text (paginated 1-7, corrected), of 'The Tutelar of the Place', three pages of another text and one other page. This material is contained in a folder noted by David Jones as containing a text of the poem 'corrected up to date May 25 '57'.

The file comprises typescript and photocopied typescripts of 'Some notes on the draft of the Kensington Mass and the Continuation of the Kensington Mass' by René Hague, and two photocopies of the Kensington Mass manuscript which was published as facsimiles A-O, with also a typed copy. There are a few letters, including two letters to René Hague from William Blisset, 1975, a copy of part of a letter from David Jones, and a letter from W[alter Shewring] to René Hague.

Typed addenda

The file includes some additions and corrections collected by René Hague to his Commentary with letters to him discussing the book from Nancy Sandars, 1978, William Blissett (3), 1975-1977, Walter Shewring and others. There are also copies of obituaries to David Jones by Peter Levi, Nigel Abercrombie, and Tom Burns, and a piece of the cover of The Anathemata.

Two Ballades

The file comprises a manuscript copy in David Jones's hand of a poem identified by Harman Grisewood as being a ballade by Hilaire Belloc, together with a draft letter to Bobby [Speaight], dated 19 May 1955, containing part of 'The Ballade of the Great British Public'. ('I append the few lines that I can now recall. I can recall better Fr John O'Connors contented expression as he recited it in his Heaton presbytery'). Neither of these poems appear to have been published.

Tutelar of the Place / Anathemata

The file comprises a piece of the dust jacket of The Anathemata describing the book; the first page of a review of Epoch and Artist entitled 'David Jones on Art and Religion' by Kenelm Foster in Blackfriars; a copy of Agenda, March-April 1963 which includes 'The Tutelar of the Place'; and the programme of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and The National Institute of Arts and Letters ceremony in New York, May 26 1954, recording the presententation of the Loines Award for poetry to David Jones.

The file comprises twenty-one letters, 1961-1969, from Tony Stoneburner, Michigan, USA, to David Jones relating to The Anathemata, In Parenthesis, and other subjects.

Title, map and dedication

The file comprises carbon typescripts of the title pages and dedication with some revision, 1937, a later typescript version of the dedication, a colourful manuscript map of the trenches, and an index to the typesetting signs used by David Jones. There is a note on f. 1 by René Hague referring to the numbering of the Notes.

The Viae

The file comprises a manuscript draft of 'The Viae' which was broadcast on the Third programme on 22nd November 1955, with an incomplete typescript copy. -- See also CF1/7.

'The painted inscriptions of David Jones'

The file comprises a typescript article entitled 'The Painted Inscriptions of David Jones'. This article, by Nicolette Gray, was published under the title 'David Jones and the Art of Lettering' in the David Jones Special Issue of Agenda, vol. 5, nos 1-3 (Spring-Summer 1967), pp. 146-52.

The Myth of Arthur

The file comprises an incomplete typescript text (paginated 10-19 and 22, 26) of 'the Myth of Arthur' (see Epoch and Artist, pp. 212-59), corrected and altered by David Jones. There are also two manuscript drafts, apparently of an insertion in the text of the missing p. 20 of this typescript.

The file comprises an incomplete typescript draft of the last section of the essay 'The Myth of Arthur' corrected by David Jones. The typescript seems to be corrected for Epoch and Artist from the text written in 1940-1941 for For Hillaire Belloc which was published by Sheed and Ward in 1942.
