P5 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of Parts V-VIII, which were stapled together. They have been corrected by David Jones in pencil and red ink, less so than P6. It includes correction and revision which do not appear in the revised page proofs: probably they were made after the return of the page proofs to the printer. Most of these are marked by David Jones in red or yellow. A few of them David Jones failed to pick up later (e.g. p. 216).

Broadcasts

The series includes material relating to a BBC broadcast of The Anathemata in 1954, produced by Douglas Cleverdon, and the introduction to a broadcast of The Anathemata entitled 'Wales and the monarchy of Britain', 1953.

Cleverdon, Douglas

Introduction

The file comprises manuscript sheets written for the BBC Welsh Home Service as an Introduction to the production of The Anathemata. This appears to have taken place about the time of the Coronation and the essay is about the English monarchy in relation to Wales. It was not included in Epoch and Artist, but compare pp. 39-48 there. Numbered pages 1-13 by David Jones, with a note by Harman Grisewood (f. i).

Broadcast notes

The file comprises material relating to a broadcast of The Anathemata by the BBC in 1953 and 1954, produced by Douglas Cleverdon: a letter from Douglas Cleverdon to David Jones about the broadcast of The Anathemata, dated March 1953, with a printed notice of the BBC Third programme Coronation week schedule (ff. 1-2); manuscript notes by David Jones for Douglas Cleverdon on a proposed broadcast version of parts of The Anathemata (ff. 3-9, 10-31); and an insertion to the broadcast script recorded 17 Nov 1954 with a letter, dated 18 Nov 1954, from Douglas Cleverdon explaining the changes (fols. 32-40).

Review by Jackson Knight

The file comprises a typescript review of The Anathemata. At the end is a brief manuscript note signed Jackson K[night], presumably the author of the review. There are also two letters from W. F. Jackson Knight to David Jones, one dated 13 Oct. 1952 and the other undated.

Redriff

The file comprises typescript commentary on part IV ('Redriff') of The Anathemata, being a draft of part of René Hague's work, A Commentary on The Anathemata of David Jones (Wellingborough, 1977).
