'David Jones, Writer and Artist'

The file comprises a notebook containing a manuscript draft of the greater part of Harman Grisewood's annual lecture for 1965 of the BBC in Wales (broadcast in 1966 and published by the BBC, London), 'David Jones, Writer and Artist', together with a sheet of paper containing a copy in David Jones's hand of passages altered by him. There is also a note by Harman Grisewood concerning this item.

Anglo-Saxon Chronicle

The file comprises printed extracts from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, translated into modern English, together with printed extracts, in the original Latin, from 'Cnutonis Regis Gesta or Encomium Emmae', the 'Vita Sancti Dunstani : auctore B' and the 'Vita Sancti Dunstani : auctore Osberno'.

'Wales through the ages'

The file comprises twenty-four scripts of 'Wales Through the Ages, II', a BBC Welsh Home Service talks series, 1959-1960 (not a complete set), with a covering letter, dated 19 November 1959 from Aneirin Talfan Davies which refers to Vera Bassett.

'Great occasions in Parliament'

The file comprises typescript (possibly a broadcast script) entitled 'Great Occasions in Parliament'. This item consists of a transcript from Hansard of the speeches of Palmerston and Gladstone in the debate on the Don Pacifico incident, 1850, with introductory notes.

The file comprises typescript texts of two plays by Dedwydd Jones, 'Drink from an Amethyst Cup' (performed 1967) and 'Watch for the Drowned Man', with an undated covering letter from the author to David Jones.

'Liturgy'

The file comprises a typescript copy of a fairly lengthy essay entitled 'Liturgy' and consisting of a programme for 'restoring the celebration of the Mass as public worship'. The first page is headed 'Please return to E. G., High Wycombe, Bucks' but internal evidence suggests that Eric Gill is not the author.

The file comprises papers found in the Library of David Jones which was deposited at the National Library of Wales in 1975 (see The Library of David Jones. A Catalogue, 1995). Atlas antiquus

The file comprises a copy of Atlas Antiquus, Twelve maps of the ancient world for schools and colleges by Dr. Heinrich Kiepert, Berlin (index pages 1-26 with maps 1-4, 6-12, loose spine).

Letters to Tom Burns

The file comprises typescript transcripts of twenty-three letters from David Jones to Tom Burns, nineteen of which date from the period 1940-1944. Twelve of these letters were printed, wholly or in part, by René Hague in Dai Greatcoat. They were once numbered 1-91, but have been rearranged into letters included and not included in the book. For the original letters see NLW MS 21797E, and for photocopies of the transcripts see NLW Facs 392.

Dry-point engravings

The file comprises photographs of two dry-point engravings by David Jones in the possession of the Victoria and Albert Museum, together with a covering letter from the Deputy Keeper of Circulation at the Museum dated 18 June 1965.

Portraits and lettering

The file comprises reproductions of artwork by David Jones: copies of lettering 'Et Hominum in principio...' (4 copies), 'pa geont haeled paet', 'iam redit et virgo...' (1956), 'his mother was like dew...', 'yn y gaeaf oer...'; copies of a self portrait, two different portraits of women, and two different shipping / storm pictures (1931 and undated); and prints of 'Jester and Imps at Brockley School Cantata' (2 copies) Walter Jones 1905; 'Anerchiad' W. David Jones 1912; stable and manger, WDJ 1919; and a deer by David Jones, 1904. David Jones has written behind some of the photographs, and some appear to have been pinned to a wall.

Drafts of letters

Manuscript drafts of letters from David Jones, almost all concerning his work as an artist. The addressees are listed on the wrapper. Amongst the subjects to which these letters relate are a proposal to reprint the engravings made by him for the Golden Cockerel Press (1944); the blocks illustrating the Chester Play of the Deluge (1959); the example of his work to be reproduced in the Arrow Press paperback edition of Sir John Rothenstein's book Modern English Painters, Lewis to Moore (1962); 'Panthers', 1931, a drawing in the possession of the Walker Gallery, Liverpool (1968); illustrations for 'Thirty Ways of Drowning in the Sea' by Peter Levi (1969) and 'Lancelot', 1940 (1944).

Art print postcards

The file mostly comprises unwritten postcards, many with a religious theme, depicting artworks, sculpture, places, museum pieces, and churches, with a pack of 19 small photographs from Sienna, and a postcard of soldiers in Flanders.

Passport and documents

The file comprises David Jones' passport, 1928-1938, two polling cards, 1950 and 1966, an award certificate from the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, 1919, two clothing voucher books, 1942-1943 and 1944-1945, food coupons, David Jones' entry for Debrett's Peerage, 1961 and a Radio Rentals payment booklet, 1964.
