Pedigrees and family history notes (Griffith of Garn and related families)

The series comprises a pedigree roll, other manuscript and typed pedigrees, extracts from parish registers, copies of tombstone inscriptions and genealogical notes on the families of Griffith of Garn, [1792x1809]-[c. 1900], Hughes of Cae'r berllan, [post-1810], [c. 1934], Maurice of Llanasa, 1838, Myddelton of Gwaunynog, [pre-1614], Price of Llanrhaeadr Hall, 1887, Roberts of Bryn y Neuadd, post-1713, and Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm-mein and Plasnewydd, 1843, 1880.

Papers of general political interest

The series comprises a copy of a Chichester MP's letter, 1814, draft petitions to the House of Commons, draft minutes of a meeting convened by the High Sheriff of Denbigh, draft speeches and press cuttings, [c. 1826]-1897, concerning the Corn Laws, changes to the judicial system in Wales, heavy taxation on country landowners and the consequent decline in agricultural communities, the increase in manufacturing industries and competition from abroad; typed extracts from a newspaper, mainly concerning the General Strike, 1926.

Other family probate records

The series consists of probate records, 1666 and 1704, of other families, namely Griffith and Chambres, connected with Griffith of Garn but which lie outside the main groups listed previously.

Non-family trust papers

The series comprises papers deriving from trusts involving John Wynne Griffith, [c. 1814] and 1827, and George Griffith, 1825-1879, for the administration of estates belonging to other families in Denbighshire and Flintshire.

Mortgages

The series comprises mortgages made by successive owners of Garn of various parts of the estate in Rhuddlan, Henllan, Llanefydd and St Asaph, namely Cwyber and the surrounding lands, 1680-1749, Garn, Roe and Cwyber, 1757-1760, Cwyber and Tre-Llewelin, 1759-1760, Coed Panton, 1759, 1761, Bryngwyn, 1794, Coed, 1799, and the Hafod estate, 1856-1862.

The series comprises sketch maps of Garn estate land at Rhuddlan, being an enclosure of marsh purchased in 1803 and a parcel received in an exchange with the Dean of St Asaph, 1806.

The series comprises original maps, copy tithe maps and plans of parts of the Garn estate in the parishes of Henllan, Llanefydd, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrwst, Llanrhaeadr-yng-nghinmeirch, Llansannan and St Asaph.

Local government papers

The series comprises copies and abstracts of charters, [post-1719]-1825, and records of the business conducted by burgesses in Holt, Denbigh and Ruthin, 1740-1741, 1803, lists of parishes, towns, freeholders and tradesmen, 1730, [c. 1791?], 1847, and Denbigh town council election papers, 1865, 1887, 1921.

Letters to Roberts of Bryn y neuadd

The series comprises letters to Catherine Roberts and other members of the Roberts family at Bryn y neuadd and Varchwel, 1705-1752, Humphrey Roberts of Bryn y neuadd, 1721-1736, and his wife, Dorothy, 1728-1757.

Letters to other members of the Griffith family

The series comprises letters to Jane Griffith (nee Wynne), 1789-1813, John Wynne Griffith the younger, 1804, Thomas Griffith, 1804-1815, George Griffith, 1813-1870, Frederick Griffith, 1824, William Henry Griffith, 1827-1828, 1835, Charlotte Maria Griffith, 1833-1836, William Douglas Wynne Griffith, 1861-1916, and John Douglas Wynne Griffith, 1942-1943. Recurrent subjects include the military career of Thomas Griffith and his death in India, condolences on the deaths of other family members, taxation, crown rents, public appointments and duties of individuals in addition to their regular careers.

Letters to miscellaneous recipients

The series comprises letters, 1680-1882, to recipients who were not directly related to the Griffith family of Garn, but who had personal or business connections with them, together with a small number of letters where neither the author nor the recipient can be identified.

The series comprises letters to John Wynne Griffith of Garn, 1784-1833, many of them from creditors, lawyers and the family of Robert Watkin Wynne concerning legal and financial problems of the Plasnewydd estate trust, 1805-1822. The series comprises letters by non-family correspondents to John Griffith (2) of Garn, 1733-1758, John Griffith (3), 1758-1791, Jane Griffith, 1761-1805, and Ann Maria Griffith, 1785. Recurrent subjects are management of the Denbighshire estate, problems surrounding the purchase of Gwaun Dwysog in Henllan, and the education of the young John Wynne Griffith.

The series comprises letters to Hugh Roberts of Gwydir and Llwyn Gronw, 1713, Hugh Hughes of Weeg, Vicar of Bangor, Registrar and Precentor, 1735-1749, to John Hughes of Gwydir, Llwyn Gronw and Cae'r berllan and other members of his family, 1741-1767, and to Elizabeth Williams (née Hughes) of Weeg and Denbigh, 1776-1823.

The series comprises letters by members of the Griffith family of Garn, 1724, 1783-1876, mainly John Wynne Griffith, his wife, Jane, their sons, Robert, George, Thomas, Edward Humphrey, William Henry, their daughter, Harriet, and immediate relatives, written to each other and occasionally to other close relatives and friends. The principal, recurring subjects have already been noted, but other matters of interest include botany, visits to Europe, army life in India, commerce and a local railway accident.
