English language compositions

The file contains poems on various subjects, including the restoration of Charles II [1660], scandalous behaviour of Mrs Price of Rhiwlas, [1779x1834], a translation of Robin Ddu's Prophesy, 1784, a copy of The Plough Boy by John O'Keefe, 1789, marriage of the Prince of Wales [1795], the French invasion, [1797], an Arthurian-style prophecy fortelling the rise of Welsh education and culture by Dr David Hughes of Ruthin school [c. 1797], copies of A Comparison by Francis Quarles and The Nosegay by William Cowper [c. 1807], lines on the tree under which William Penn made his treaty with the Indians by William Roscoe, 1813, death of Lieut. Ffrith Bodvell, Caerhun, Cae Fadock, Gyffin

The file comprises a deed of sale by Sir George Markham, Bart. to Robert Hughes of Gwydir, of Ffrith Bodvell, in the parish of Caerhun and Cae Fadock in Gyffin. [Like the other lands in Caerhun, the two properties ultimately descended to Robert Hughes', niece, Jane Griffith, mother of John Wynne Griffith of Garn, who conveyed them to his son, Robert Griffith, in a family settlement of 1814].

Ffrith Eithin/Rhes y Cae, Henllan

The file comprises deeds, 1766-1856, for Ffrith Eithin, alias Rhes y Cae, which had been mortgaged to Mary Wynne by Thomas Evans of Denbigh in 1803. As executor of her will, her son-in-law, John Wynne Griffith, was entitled to claim repayment of the mortgage money. The presence of a draft deed of sale would suggest that the property had become forfeit to the Griffith family, intended to be sold by George Griffith in 1856.

Food and general household accounts

The file comprises three notebooks and several loose accounts of foodstuffs, fuel, household items, wool, inventories of the stable, 1799, butler's pantry, 1803 and silver plate, 1814-1819.

Funeral, probate and inheritance accounts

The file comprises funeral, probate and inheritance accounts, 1727-1863, including accounts of the estate of George Coytmore and Bridgett Coytmore, 1727-[c. 1738], the goods of Lewis Atkinson, the Cwyber mortgage assignee, 1739, personal estate of John Griffith (3), solicitor's bill for proving his will and related expenses, 1791, estate of Thomas Griffith in India and East Indies, 1805, 1813-1825, and funeral expenses of Robert Griffith, 1818.

Gadlas, previously Tir y Bwrdd, and other properties (Treffos)

The file consists of leases by John, Lord Bishop of Bangor, to Humphrey Roberts of Bryn y Neuadd, 1770, and by Mary Wynne to Robert Lloyd of Castell Yor, 1784, of Gadlas, previously called Tir y Bwrdd, Tythyn y Ty Hen, otherwise Tyddyn John Hugh, Tyddyn y Groes, Tythyn Angharad and Tythyn Gronw, in the manor of Treffos.

Garden and workshop, Sandy Lane/Lone Goch, Denbigh

The file comprises deeds for a garden which was in the ownership of Mark Evans, an innkeeper, by 1732. He sold it to Hugh Thomas (alias Williams), glover, of Denbigh, in 1749, when it was bounded on the north by lands of Thomas Roberts, on the south by Sandy Lane, on the east by the lands of Richard Evans and on the west by the lands of Hugh Hughes Lloyd. By his will of 1766, Hugh Thomas (alias Williams) devised a workhouse, croft and garden in Lone Goch to his great niece, Mary Parry. She and her husband, John Williams, mortgaged the property to Paul Griffith in 1777, who sold it at their direction to Mary Wynne of Denbigh in 1784.

Garden lists

The file comprises lists of vegetable seeds for the garden and of flowering plants received, probably dating from between 1785 and 1834.

Griffith family settlements (George Griffith)

The file comprises articles of agreement, 1835, by George Griffith with his younger brothers and his brother-in-law, John Price now of Llanrhaiadr Hall, for raising £2000 on Tan Llan, Llanefydd, to benefit William Henry Griffith and his sister, Harriet Price, following the realisation that the provisions of John Wynne Griffith's will for payment of the money were inadequate; the marriage settlement of George Griffith of Garn and Charlotte Maria Douglas of Gyrn, 1836, preceded by a disentailing deed for enlarging the estate in tail by the addition of allotments of common land; disentailment of Tan Llan and other Denbighshire and Flintshire properties, 1863, to enable completion of payment to John Price, in accordance with the agreement of 1835.

Griffith family settlements (John Griffith (2))

The file comprises the marriage settlement of John Griffith (2) of Garn and Mary Davies of Trewylan, Montgomeryshire, 1723; assignments of right and title and a general release, 1743-1744, 1748, to John Griffith (2) by the daughters of John Griffith (1), or their surviving relatives, following the payment of legacies owed to them under the latter's will of 1685, with a memorandum that the 1743 deed was used in a Chancery case in 1748; a trust settlement of a moiety of the Roe estate in St Asaph, 1755, for the purpose of compensating John Griffith (2) 's children for the sale in 1754 of his deceased wife 's estate in Collfryn and Trefnannau, in accordance with the terms of his marriage settlement.
