Griffith family probate records (Garn)

The series comprises probate records of the Griffith family of Garn, 1685-1835, including four of its owners, John Griffith (1), (2) and (3), 1685, 1759 and 1791 respectively, and John Wynne Griffith, 1835. A notable omission is the will of Robert Griffith (died 1818), to which specific references are made both in the family settlement of 1833 and in the will of his father, John Wynne Griffith, 1835.

Wills of John Griffith (2) and family

The file comprises the administration, 1759, with will annexed of John Griffith (2) of Garn, dated 8 August 1758, which includes bequests of a silver punch bowl and silver decanter jugs, with an account of his stock, furniture, plate and cash, 1759, and the will of his daughter, Anna Maria Griffith, dated 23 Nov. 1769.

Will of John Griffith (3)

The file comprises a draft and copy will of John Griffith (3) of Garn, dated 18 May 1786, proved 1791, which includes bequests of his chaise, harness and horses, accompanied by an inventory and account of funeral expenses, 1791.

Will of Robert Hughes of Cae'r berllan

The file comprises four copies of the will of Robert Hughes of Cae'r berllan, dated 5 August 1670; the will was declared invalid and the inheritance passed to his niece, Jane Williams.

Wills and administration of Williams of Cae'r berllan and Varchwel

The file comprises a commission to administer oath to Grace Williams, widow and administratrix of John Williams of Cae'r berllan, intestate, great-grandfather of Jane Griffith (née Hughes) of Garn, dated 15 March 1714/15, and the wills of his brother, Evan William of Llanrwst, 29 Dec. 1704, and his mother-in-law, Jane Williams of Varchwel, 15 January 1711/[12].

Will of Hugh Roberts of Gwydir

The file comprises the will, with two copies, of Hugh Roberts of Gwydir, father of Thomas Hughes and therefore paternal great-grandfather of Jane Griffith (née Hughes) of Garn, dated 12 Jan. 1712/13, proved 1715.

Will of Edward Chambres of Plas Chambres

The file comprises a copy will, dated 25 July 1704, of Edward Chambres of Plas Chambres, Henllan, son of Charles Chambres and his wife, Ellen, who was daughter of Edward Griffith of Lleweni and Alltfaenan; the will refers to a debt to be paid from the mortgaged Flintshire estate of John Griffith (1) of Garn.

Case of John Griffith against John Hosier

The file comprises the complaint of John Griffith (2) of Garn against John Hosier. J.G. was collector of rents for the Myddeltons of Chirk Castle estate until 1750, when he appointed John Hosier as his agent. The latter was also responsible for collecting rents of the Voelas estate, the financial management of a lead mining venture in which J.G. was a partner, and for ensuring payment of the mortgage encumbering Gwaun Dwysog. J.G. accused him of fraudulent accounting, mismanagement and acting in his name without authority. It seems that an attempt was made to settle by arbitration in 1753 before resorting to legal procedures in 1754. The file also includes abstracts and memoranda of accounts, 1733-1751, used as evidence.

Arbitration awards, agreements and opinions

The series comprises papers resulting from disputes settled by arbitration and private agreement, mainly concerning land boundaries, and solicitors' opinions on family settlements, 1677, 1761-1839.

Mortgage of Bryngwyn and other premises in Henllan

The file comprises a 500 year mortgage for £600, dated 1794, by John Wynne Griffith of Garn to Robert Williams of Gwasaney, of a recently purchased messuage and garden called Bryngwyn with several pieces of land in the parish of Henllan, including two messuages, a garden and smithy in the occupation of Thomas Hughes, smith, excepting a lease affecting the latter premises for 58 years still unexpired.

Mortgage of Coed

The file comprises a mortgage dated 1799 by John Wynne Griffith to Mary Lloyd of Penniarth for 500 years, for £600 which he has charged on a messuage called Coed in the parish of Llanefydd, in exercise of a power in his marriage settlement for raising a sum not exceeding £1000.

Mortgage of Hafod estate

The file comprises a mortgage, dated 1856, by George Griffith to Rev. George Powell and others for £5000 of Hafod, the mill, Tyn y Celyn, Vach, Pwll y Glomen, Bryn Deunydd and Erw'r Streat in the parish of Llanefydd , recently purchased from John Richard Heaton, subject to crown rent charge on Bryn Deunydd, with a reconveyance, 1862.

Maurice of Llanasa

The file comprises copies, made in 1838, of parish register entries and tombstone inscriptions, 1681-1682, of Dr David Maurice, his wife, Ales, son, William, and daughter, Grace, who married Edward Griffith of Plasnewydd in 1683/4.

Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm-mein and Plasnewydd

The file comprises two pedigrees of Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm Mein and Plasnewydd and the Parr Lynes family who were descended from them, with a list of family portraits, compiled between 1843 and 1880.

Lloyd of Gwrych, Abergele

The file comprises a heavily annotated printed pedigree of Lloyd of Gwrych, torn from a copy of The History of Powys Fadog, [1881x1887].

Letters by Jane Griffith (née Hughes)

The file comprises copies of letters, 1808-1809, sent to her grandson, Thomas Griffith, in India and the East Indies, with detailed items of family, local and social news.
