The series comprises a copy of a Chichester MP's letter, 1814, draft petitions to the House of Commons, draft minutes of a meeting convened by the High Sheriff of Denbigh, draft speeches and press cuttings, [c. 1826]-1897, concerning the Corn Laws, changes to the judicial system in Wales, heavy taxation on country landowners and the consequent decline in agricultural communities, the increase in manufacturing industries and competition from abroad; typed extracts from a newspaper, mainly concerning the General Strike, 1926.

The group comprises legal papers arising from court cases, mostly Chancery proceedings, 1672-1928, rules for court procedures, 1764, and papers resulting from disputes which did not take place in court, such as arbitration awards and agreements, 1677-1839, mainly concerning difficulties over title and encumbrances on properties such as Cae'rberllan and Cwyber in the late seventeenth century, Tyddyn Glan y Ffynnon and Gwaun Dwysog in the mid eighteenth century, and with problems of inheritance, for example, following the death of John Griffith (2) of Garn in 1758.

Pedigrees and family history notes (Griffith of Garn and related families)

The series comprises a pedigree roll, other manuscript and typed pedigrees, extracts from parish registers, copies of tombstone inscriptions and genealogical notes on the families of Griffith of Garn, [1792x1809]-[c. 1900], Hughes of Cae'r berllan, [post-1810], [c. 1934], Maurice of Llanasa, 1838, Myddelton of Gwaunynog, [pre-1614], Price of Llanrhaeadr Hall, 1887, Roberts of Bryn y Neuadd, post-1713, and Wynne of Garthmeilio, Cwm-mein and Plasnewydd, 1843, 1880.

Penporchell, Llanefydd

The file comprises deeds relating to Penporchell, which had been purchased by Thomas Griffith from William Lloyd of Hendre in 1696. It was one of the premises settled by Edward Griffith of Plasnewydd on his daughter, Elizabeth, when she married Robert Wynne of Cwm Mein in 1713. By 1728, Penporchell, or at least part of it, was in the ownership of Thomas Williams of Meiriadog, who mortgaged it to Dorothy Jones in 1733. He settled Penporchell and lands in Twysog on his daughter, Mary, when she married Thomas Jones, son of Robert Jones of Dymeirchion, 1749. Several assignments and further mortgages were undertaken between 1766 and 1798, by which time the premises were in the hands of Thomas Jones, grandson of Thomas Jones of Cwm. In 1801, one of the assignees, John Lloyd Salusbury, purchased the lands in Twysog, hence their disappearance from the deeds at this point. There were further mortgages and assignments of Penporchell from 1803 to 1852. Thomas Jones died in 1860 and by his will appointed a trustee to sell or mortgage Penporchell to pay legacies and to hold the estate in trust for his eldest daughter, Miriam. She mortgaged it, with the trustee's consent, in 1863 to Gabriel Roberts, who immediately assigned the mortgage to Eliza Parry. George Griffith purchased the property in 1864 and leased the premises back to Miriam Jones at the same time. -- Another part of Penporchell, Penporchell Uchaf, remained in the possession of the Wynne family until the Plasnewydd estate was sold in 1808.

Pentre Du and Aberdene, Llanefydd

The file comprises deeds for two properties called Pentre Du and Aberdene. They were sold in 1782 by Robert Evans of Gwyndu, Betws Abergele, to John Griffith (3) of Garn, together with an assignment in trust of the remaining term of a mortgage taken out in 1769. Presumably there was more than one property at Pentre Du, since another part belonged to the Plasnewydd estate, and was purchased, together with Merllyn, by George Griffith in 1837.

Personal accounts

The file comprises personal accounts, 1762, 1787-1885, mainly bills for shoes and clothing for the Griffith family, children's school fees and hotel accommodation, but also including an account of money given to the nurse at Garthmeilio when Jane Wynne was born, 1762, and a list of medical expenses for John Wynne Griffith, 1787-1814.

Personal papers

The group comprises personal papers, being letters written by and received by the Griffith family, 1724-1943, letters of families such as Hughes of Gwydir, Weeg, Llwyn Gronw and Cae'rberllan, Roberts of Bryn y neuadd, Wynne of Garthmeilio and Plasnewydd, and others, 1680-1882, small diaries, pocket notebooks and almanacks containing memoranda and personal notes, 1701-1853, a few photographs, postcards and other memorabilia, 1901-[c. 1940], school papers, certificates and appointments, 1746-1920. The family members who are most frequently represented here are Jane Griffith (nee Hughes), John Wynne Griffith, Jane Griffith (nee Wynne), George Griffith, Edward Humphrey Griffith, William Henry Griffith and William Douglas Wynne Griffith. The letters, notebooks and diaries are illustrative of late eighteenth and nineteenth century life, particularly with regard to the family and household, social engagements, sporting activities, travel, elections, contemporary local and national events, domestic organisation and estate management.
