Cases concerning estates of the Myddelton family of Chirk Castle

The file comprises a rent roll of the paternal estate of Robert Myddelton of Chirk Castle, who died in 1733, succeeded by his brother, John, and three separate cases involving John Myddelton, 1736-1744: demands by his brother's creditors for payment of debts, a dispute with his sister-in-law, Anne, concerning non-payment of rents and entitlement to lands in Denbighshire and Montgomeryshire, and his own attempt to recover estate profits from the widow and son of his former steward. The cases may have been of interest to John Griffith (2) of Garn who was a trustee of the will of Sir William Myddelton and collected Chirk rents until 1750.

Myddelton family, of Gwaenynog, Denbigh, Chirk and Ruthin, Denbighshire, London, and Essex

Case of John Griffith against John Hosier

The file comprises the complaint of John Griffith (2) of Garn against John Hosier. J.G. was collector of rents for the Myddeltons of Chirk Castle estate until 1750, when he appointed John Hosier as his agent. The latter was also responsible for collecting rents of the Voelas estate, the financial management of a lead mining venture in which J.G. was a partner, and for ensuring payment of the mortgage encumbering Gwaun Dwysog. J.G. accused him of fraudulent accounting, mismanagement and acting in his name without authority. It seems that an attempt was made to settle by arbitration in 1753 before resorting to legal procedures in 1754. The file also includes abstracts and memoranda of accounts, 1733-1751, used as evidence.

Case of ejectment from farm, Llandrillo and Llansanffraid Glan Conwy

The file comprises a case by Robert Hughes for John Trevor, lessee of Thomas Williams, Thomas Price and others, plt., against Thomas Jones of Mochdre, Robert Owen of Trebwll and others, defts., for forcible ejectment from farm of ten messuages, gardens, 100a. land, 50a. meadow, etc., in the parishes of Llandrillo and Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, co. Denbigh.

Case concerning the will of Mary Hughes of Weeg

The file comprises a request for opinion on the right of Elizabeth Hughes to a monetary bequest and personal estate of her aunt, Mary Hughes of Weeg, and on the source of the annuity granted to John Wynne Griffith under the terms of the will.

Case concerning Galltvaynan estate

The file comprises an opinion on drawing up deeds for properties in Llansannan and Ysbty [Ifan], with reference to the marriage settlement of John Jones and Elizabeth Welchman of Galltvaynan, made in 1730, to which John Griffith (2) of Garn and Robert Wynne of Plasnewydd were parties.

Case concerning estate of Jane Williams of Varchwel

The file comprises a complaint of fraud by Catherine Williams, daughter of Jane Williams of Varchwel, Caerhun (died 1711/12), against her brother, Thomas, and sister, Grace, who apparently during her absence had taken possession of their mother's goods, destroyed deeds and documents and concealed the true value of the estate. As executrix of her mother and administratrix of her deceased father's goods, Catherine submitted her complaint against them in 1714, claiming that there were still debts due to creditors which should be paid out of the estate.

Case concerning ejectment from farm in Denbigh

The file comprises a declaration in ejectment, 1763, by William Griffith, lessee of Edward Parry, plt., against John Edwards and Elizabeth his wife, Margaret Davies and Hugh Davies, defts., from farm of premises in Lower Ward, Denbigh.

Capital messuage in Castell

The file comprises a mortgage by John Parry to William ap Hugh ap Owen of a capital messuage, orchard and garden, and a house occupied by Evan ap Richard, clerk, with bond, dated 1618. There is a possibility that this property is the capital messuage called Tythin Harry ap David in a lease of 1737.

Cae'r berllan, Llanrwst

The file consists of documents relating to Cae'r berllan, the title to which was much disputed in the late seventeenth century. [In his will of 1670, Robert Hughes had devised all his property in Tybrith to his wife, Ann, but the will could not be proved. An entail created by a deed of 1529 meant that the lands descended to Jane, daughter of his brother, William, and wife to William John ap Richard. However, a nephew of Robert Hughes attempted to claim title under the terms of the will, and lengthy legal disputes ensued]. The documents comprise two bonds by William John ap Richard to lease Cae'r berllan, 1695 and 1698, a bond to release right and title back to him, 1703, and a later deed by John Griffith (3) of Garn, of part of Cae'r berllan for the purpose of a new turnpike road leading from Corwen to Llanrwst, in exchange for part of the old road lying near Caer Melwr Bridge, 1781.

Caeau Meifod, Denbigh

The file comprises an abstract of title of Edward Humphrey Griffith and his son, Capt. Edward Wynne Griffith, 1816-1859, of Caeau Meifod, contracted to be sold to Richard Lloyd Williams in 1871. [The property previously belonged to Robert Griffith, who had inherited it from his grandmother, Mary Wynne].
