Poetry, essays and other compositions

The series comprises original compositions and copies of works both published and unpublished, written in English, Welsh and Latin, consisting of poems, translations, essays and stories about contemporary and historical events and local figures, [1660]-1925, a script for a public address, [1834], and suggestions for a commemorative inscription, 1815.

Plasnewydd trust papers

The file comprises papers relating to Plasnewydd and the property of Mary Wynne, including a rental of her estate, 1783, an abstract of deeds, 1791, valuations, accounts, bills and receipts, 1795-1826, an agreement for the sale of Plasnewydd to Sarah Heaton, 1807, and legal papers concerning administration and debts, 1806, 1814-1843, together with a copy of her will, 1803, and several codicils, 1805-1812. The accounts show general outgoings, and highlight such problems as the shortage of available funds for the education and maintenance of young William Wynne and for paying legacies due to him; one account of 1814 shows total debts of over £30,000 on the estate.

The family members who are most frequently represented here are Jane Griffith (nee Hughes), John Wynne Griffith, Jane Griffith (nee Wynne), George Griffith, Edward Humphrey Griffith, William Henry Griffith and William Douglas Wynne Griffith. Personal accounts

The file comprises personal accounts, 1762, 1787-1885, mainly bills for shoes and clothing for the Griffith family, children's school fees and hotel accommodation, but also including an account of money given to the nurse at Garthmeilio when Jane Wynne was born, 1762, and a list of medical expenses for John Wynne Griffith, 1787-1814.

Pentre Du and Aberdene, Llanefydd

The file comprises deeds for two properties called Pentre Du and Aberdene. They were sold in 1782 by Robert Evans of Gwyndu, Betws Abergele, to John Griffith (3) of Garn, together with an assignment in trust of the remaining term of a mortgage taken out in 1769. Presumably there was more than one property at Pentre Du, since another part belonged to the Plasnewydd estate, and was purchased, together with Merllyn, by George Griffith in 1837.

Penporchell, Llanefydd

The file comprises deeds relating to Penporchell, which had been purchased by Thomas Griffith from William Lloyd of Hendre in 1696. It was one of the premises settled by Edward Griffith of Plasnewydd on his daughter, Elizabeth, when she married Robert Wynne of Cwm Mein in 1713. By 1728, Penporchell, or at least part of it, was in the ownership of Thomas Williams of Meiriadog, who mortgaged it to Dorothy Jones in 1733. He settled Penporchell and lands in Twysog on his daughter, Mary, when she married Thomas Jones, son of Robert Jones of Dymeirchion, 1749. Several assignments and further mortgages were undertaken between 1766 and 1798, by which time the premises were in the hands of Thomas Jones, grandson of Thomas Jones of Cwm. In 1801, one of the assignees, John Lloyd Salusbury, purchased the lands in Twysog, hence their disappearance from the deeds at this point. There were further mortgages and assignments of Penporchell from 1803 to 1852. Thomas Jones died in 1860 and by his will appointed a trustee to sell or mortgage Penporchell to pay legacies and to hold the estate in trust for his eldest daughter, Miriam. She mortgaged it, with the trustee's consent, in 1863 to Gabriel Roberts, who immediately assigned the mortgage to Eliza Parry. George Griffith purchased the property in 1864 and leased the premises back to Miriam Jones at the same time. -- Another part of Penporchell, Penporchell Uchaf, remained in the possession of the Wynne family until the Plasnewydd estate was sold in 1808.
