Letters from John White to Eirene White

A file of letters from John White to his wife Eirene written during their occasional absences. They contain much personal, domestic and family news, with fairly frequent references to political and professional matters. Several of the letters were written during Eirene White's trips abroad, and some refer to John White's publishing career and activities.

The series comprises letters, 1929-1980, to and from Tristan Jones, papers concerning his death in 1990 and to the sale of his extensive collection of ceramic political figures in January 1991.

The series comprises stray family letters, 1901-1973, papers concerning the publication in 1929 of a memoir to Elphin Lloyd Jones, and material, 1938-1973, relating to the administration of the Elphin Lloyd Jones Memorial Fund.

Acquired printed material

The section comprises mainly printed materials 1919-1997, - pamphlets, invitations to events and tickets of admission, typescripts and press cuttings, acquired and preserved by Eirene White.

Typescripts

The file comprises a substantial group of typescript items, mainly circulars, mainly relating to political life. Of particular interest is a report, 'Trade Unions in Nationalised Industries' produced by the Intelligence Division of the Ministry of Labour in November 1919.

Letters from Eirene White to her parents and brother

The file comprises letters from Eirene Jones to her parents and brother Tristan Jones. Many were written during Continental travels and describe in some detail her experiences and activities; they include letters written at Paris, Edinburgh, Freiburg, Strasbourg, Heidelberg and Munich. There is also a small number of letters giving her initial impressions as an undergraduate student at Somerville College, Oxford, in the autumn of 1929.

The file comprises printed texts of the speeches delivered by King George V on the State Opening of Parliament, January 1924, February 1926 and August 1928, together with correspondence, 1919-1929, between Thomas Jones, Lord Stamfordham and Captain Evans relating to the drafting of the speeches and other related papers.

The file comprises correspondence and papers relating to the custody and the use of the Dr Thomas Jones CH Papers in the National Library of Wales. They include a large number of requests from scholars and researchers seeking permission from Eirene White or Tristan Jones to consult their father's papers. There are also a few miscellaneous stray papers concerning the Thomas Jones Memorial Fund, the question of publishing material in the Jones Papers, the cataloguing of the papers by Dr Gwyn A. Williams, and a group of press cuttings containing reviews of the published diaries.

This is interspersed with occasional references to personal and family events. There is also a single stray letter, 5 April 1951, from Thomas Jones to John White.

Notes and notebooks

The file comprises miscellaneous notes and notebooks kept by Eirene White between c. 1930 and c. 1990. They include an early address book and a pocket diary for 1944 bearing notes of appointments and engagements. There are also some draft notes prepared to deliver speeches.
