Cricket: 'Stop the tour' campaign,

Material relating to the Anti-Apartheid Movement campaign to stop the English cricket team tour of South Africa in 1990 comprising press releases, copy letters, press cuttings and copy press cuttings. Also includes two copy letters relating to the International Cricket Council (ICC) decision to re-admit South Africa as a member in 1991.

Sports press cuttings,

Press cuttings relating to sport under Apartheid, from the Western Mail, South Wales Argus, Guardian, South Wales Echo and others, on various aspects of the sports boycott and South African sports men and women, including the Commonwealth Games and Zola Budd, 1984-1988. Also some copies of "Sport & Apartheid", the newsletter of the International Campaign against Apartheid Sport and the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee (SAN-ROC).

Amandla Choir,

Letters from local authorities, trade unions and some individuals regarding funding for the 1985 tour by 'Amandla', a cultural ensemble of the African National Congress (ANC). Also includes a brochure from 1983.

General cultural boycott,

Letters, bulletins, press-cuttings, posters, and theatre programmes relating mainly to Welsh and UK cultural events promoted and supported by the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Includes items relating to performances by the Jones Choir and SAWCO's 'The Long March Singers Tour', and the cultural agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and South Africa.

Poets against apartheid,

Material relating to an anthology, "Poets against Apartheid/Beirdd yn erbyn Apartheid", published by the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) including letters, typescripts of poetry, news cuttings and a photocopy of the front cover of the publication.

Economic campaigns and sanctions,

Material relating to campaigns of an economic nature, including those boycotting gold and jewelry of South African origin, campaigns against banks that were investing and operating in South Africa, campaigns supporting oil embargoes placed on South Africa and Namibia, campaigns discouraging foreign investment in South Africa, and campaigns calling for the implementation of sanctions against the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Also contains lists of companies trading in South Africa and information on the shareholdings of several British and European companies with suspected links to Apartheid.

Case for sanctions,

Material relating to calls for the implementation of economic sanctions against the Apartheid regime in South Africa, and the activities carried out at local and national levels in support of sanctions through the AAM "Isolate Apartheid South Africa: Sanctions Now" campaign and the organisation of a mass lobby of Parliament for sanctions against apartheid on 17 June 1986. Material includes letters, reports, memoranda, seminar and campaign papers, strategy papers, briefing documents, fact sheets, action plans, printed speeches and press releases. Also includes letters and background papers for the AAM "Isolate Apartheid" Trade Union Week of Action, 1981.

Disinvestment in South Africa,

Material relating to an Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) disinvestment campaign which sought to raise awareness of the extent of British investment in South Africa and how this supported the Apartheid regime there. This file contains material aimed mainly at students attending British universities, consisting of campaign briefings and instructions, correspondence between particular student unions and Barclays Bank, draft memoranda, and printed reports and studies by various organisations such as the AAM, Leeds University South Africa Disinvestment Group, and the United Nations. Also a Trades Union Congress (TUC) report on the withdrawal of all British investment from South Africa, which was circulated to Trade Union Pension Fund Trustees.

Loans to South Africa,

Material relating to campaigning by European Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO), End Loans to South Africa (ELTSA) and the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) against loans to South Africa and debt rescheduling. Includes campaign plans, newsletters, letters, briefings, reports and other strategic documents.

Oil embargo,

Printed and published material collected by WAAM in relation to the oil embargo placed on South Africa and Namibia in 1980. Includes reports by the AAM, the Shipping Research Bureau, the Counter Information Services (CIS) and studies published by the UN Centre Against Apartheid in their 'Notes and Documents' series.

Mozambique and Angola emergency campaigns,

Material relating to campaigns and initiatives of the Mozambique Angola Committee and the Anti-Apartheid Movement, including the Angola Emergency Campaign and the Mozambique Now! campaign. These campaigns focused on support for peaceful multi-party elections in Angola and Mozambique. Folder includes memoranda, order forms for campaign materials, campaign launch statements and bulletins, campaign plans and timetables, and printed leaflets.

Political prisoners and detainees,

Material relating to Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) campaigns for the release of political prisoners in South Africa including Walter Sisulu, the Sharpville 6, the Pretoria Twelve, the Moroka Three and James Mange amongst others. File comprises press cuttings, reports, press statements, circulars, copies of a letters written by various prisoners (including Ahmed Kathrada, from his cell in Robben Island Prison), a typescript copy of "Operation Mayibuye," SATIS publications, and letters and briefings from the ANC. Also Amnesty International reports concerning apartheid imprisonment and execution.

Libraries and apartheid,

Newsletter of the South Wales Association of Assistant Librarians, Autumn 1984; copies of articles extracted from the 'Library Association Record', Volume 86 (1984) containing articles relating to job advertisments and information on libraries in South Africa.

Local authorities against apartheid,

Material relating to the formation of a National Steering Committee on Local Authority Action Against Apartheid, and its work coordinating and assisting local authorities in developing anti-apartheid policies in the various areas over which they had control or influence - such as sporting and consumer links with South Africa, cultural exchanges and general purchasing policies. File includes correspondence, reports, membership lists, discussion papers and other printed material from a national conference held in 1985, a 'Week of Action' schedule of events, guidelines, UN survey results, and copies of papers relating to legal cases involving the Crown vs Leicester City Council, 1984, and Lewisham Council vs Shell UK, 1987.
