Notebooks

The series comprises notebooks, 1877-1901, used by H. Clarence Whaite as president of the Royal Cambrian Academy containing details of exhibition dates, council meetings, Art Union meetings, notes for his reports and speeches, together with notes relating to the day to day running of the Academy.

Art Union

The file consists of both manuscript and printed papers relating to the Royal Cambrian Academy Art Union ballot for pictures, 1885-1897, including circulars, advertisements, and lists of prizes and winners. The RCA Art Union was formed for the purpose of aiding the development of the fine arts in Wales by the distribution of works of art, selected from the RCA's exhibitions, by means of an annual lottery.

Papers relating to Plas Mawr

The file comprises various papers relating to Plas Mawr, including a printed account of a proposed new gallery, together with plans, 1889; details of a proposed national institute for Wales, 1887, with a general outline of scheme; draft charter of the Royal Cambrian Academy, 1884, draft lease of the building, 1888, together with manuscript extracts from the lease; an article on the art gallery for North Wales, 1883; printed accounts of the origins of the building, and manuscript notes on how the Royal Cambrian Academy was established in 1881, drawings of Plas Mawr, and guide booklets to Plas Mawr.

Queen's jubilee

The file comprises a small amount of papers relating to the album presented to the Queen on the occasion of the jubilee year of her reign, 1886-1887, together with a draft of an address to her on the occasion of her diamond jubilee, 1897.

The series comprises catalogues, 1863-1912, of the exhibitions held at various galleries throughout Britain, together with a small number of catalogues of exhibitions held abroad.
