Book of memoranda in the hand of Rees Morgan, p. Glyncorrwg, co. Glam., yeoman, containing a variety of important business and personal entries. The majority of the writer's business entries relate to sheep, and especially to shearing at home, with his parents, and at Troed-rhiw-wrach, Blaengwrach, Glyn Neadd, Blaen Neadd, etc. Others contain memoranda of deliveries of planks and posts, the receipt of rents and of debts, wages promised to a servant (£1.12.6 for the year 1695, with 'earnes' of 1s.), the purchase of malt, the payment for repairs by tenants at Pwllva'r onn [p. Cadoxton iuxta Neath], etc., the delivery of coal to Sir H[umphrey] Mackworth (74 tons, 17 cwts, costing £6.4.9), etc.; and copies of bonds for the payment of debts. The writer's personal memoranda consist largely of the following 'Memorialls' or entries of births, baptisms, and deaths in his family: Margrett Morgan born 1 Sept. 1670; Rees Morgan born 2 June 1673; Sarah Morgan born Whitsun Eve 1675; Llewelyn Morgan born 10 Oct. 1677; William Morgan born 3 July 1679; Jennett Morgan born 9 Sept. 1681; Rees Morgan married to Margaret Thomas, 6 Dec. 1693, Wednesday after St Andrews. R. M. then aged 20 Years and 5 months; Sissill Rees born Sunday 16 Sept. 1694; Lewelyn Prees born Sunday morning, 8 March 1696; Thomas Preese born Sunday evening, 10 July 1698; Morgan Prees born Saturday morning , 7 Dec. 1700. Baptized 14 [Jan.] 1703; Jonathan Rees dec. 6 May 1703, aged 4 months and 4 days; Elizabeth Prees born Friday, 1 o'clock in the evening, 10 March 1704. Baptized 14 March 1704; 'My Deare Beloved Brother' William Morgan, dec. Tuesday morning, 29 May 1705, aged 25 years, 10 months, 28 days; Scissill Philip, 'my Mother in Law' dec. Friday morning, 15 March 1706, aged 67 years; 'My Deare and Loveinge father' Morgan Llewelyn dec. Wednesday morning, 27 March 1706, aged 59 years, 7 months, 26 days; Jane Rees born Thursday morning 10 Oct. 1706; Jonathan Rees born Tuesday morning 20 Dec. 1709; 'My Deare Beloved Sister' Jennett Morgan dec. Thursday 27 Dec. 1711, aged 30 years September last; Margrett Jones dec. Monday 9 Feb. 1713, aged 19 years on 28 March next following 'if shee had lived soe longe'; David Rees born Thursday evening 19 Feb. 1713; Catherine Rees born Tuesday at 2 a.m., 4 Oct. 1719; 'My Deare Jonathan' dec. Wednesday at 2 p.m., 9 March 1720, aged 10 years, 2 months, 3 weeks; 'My Deare and Loveing Mother' Catherine Deere, the only daughter of Stephen Deere of Lantwitt Major, dec. Friday morning, 15 April 1720, aged 81; James Prees born Monday morning, 29 April 1728. Dec. 29 March 1729; Catherine Deer christened 16 March 1639; 'this accompt I had from Lantwitt Major, by E. Le.'; Thomas John, 'my Sonne in Law', dec. Friday at 12 o'clock at night, at Aberavan, 30 Jan. 1730; 'My Deare Sonne Thomas Prees went to England on tuesday May ye 11th 1742, he setled himself Monday the 17th following. God by his foresight hath such order taken that true believers cannot be forsaken. RM aetat' suae 69'. The writer has recorded the following important entries which illustrate his connection with Dissent and throw new light on the early development of the cause at Neath: 'Lysted ... my selfe and my wieffe to be Members of a Congregation of Mr Lewis Dauies', 2 May 1703. RM chosen and elected and elder of the church, 21 June 1707. Thomas William was elected to be his assistant, 30 March 1731, in the '58 yeare of mine Age'. Mr Lewis Davies 'our much Endeared friend, Spirituall father, Pastor and Brother, in the fellowship of the Gospel, and Preacher of the word att Neathe New house', dec. on the Lord's Day at 10 am, 1 Feb. 1708. Mr Thomas Davies came to Neath 'In the roome of his Brother' on Friday, 30 Sept. 1709. Mr Thomas Davies dec. March 1726. There are also records of the writer's admission to the offices of chief constable, 1 May 1701, and reeve in Neath Ultra, 1702; a record of the burial in wool of Roger Thomas of p. Glyncorrwgge, 24 Sept. 1693; a 'pass for a traveler' issued by Penry Williams to RM, 4 July 1734, in respect of p's Ystrodvelltey and Cadoxton iuxta Neath; medical and veterinary recipes; Welsh and English poems, including a variant of an English carol in 'triban' metre preserved in Penrice and Margam document No. A.76 and said in the last line to have been written by 'William Wroath'; an assessment of tithe rent in Blaengwrach; 'The names of those that is to maintain for this ensuing yeare, A. Reeve', 30 Sept. 1698 (Bussy Mansell, £38.13.0; Rees Morgan, £9; William Morgan, in the right of his wife, £3.10.0); memoranda of wages due to workmen; particulars of English measures; a riddle; an acrostic; etc. [This vol. was received in June 1955.].

Essay entitled 'Enwau Lleoedd yn Nyffrynnoedd Nedd a Dulais, a'u hystyron' written by 'Einion Gam' [i.e. D. Arthen Evans, Barry], and submitted by him to the National Eisteddfod held at Neath in Aug. 1934; together with extracts in the author's hand from the adjudication of Sir Ifor Williams. The prize was divided equally between this and another composition submitted by 'Apabeti' [Beti Rhys, Nant-y-moel]. Pp. [viii], 296, [+2].
