The file comprises correspondence, 1972-1975, relating to the organising of the 'Paintings and Drawings' and 'Life and Times' exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, London, 1975, mainly letters from Roy Strong, its director, together with minutes of a meeting held in 1974 and a list of the main room titles for 'The Life and Times' exhibition and a 'Select list of paintings in Great Britain and Ireland'.

The file comprises a letter, 1995, from the archivist at the Gallery enclosing a photocopy of a letter, 1922, from Augustus John relating to the copyright of a painting sold to the Gallery and correspondence, 1923-1971, relating to the artist's cartoon 'Canadians opposite Lens', 1917-1918, and other works by him. Also included is a list of its Augustus John holdings.

The fonds comprises the research papers of Michael Holroyd mainly relating to his biography of Augustus John originally published in 1974-1975, other editions and the revised edition published in 1996. These include letters from the John family, researchers, British and foreign repositories, photocopies of letters from Augustus John to his family, letters to fellow artists, his writer friends and members of the Gypsy Lore Society; reminiscences of friends and family; press cuttings relating to his works; papers relating to Augustus John's autobiography Chiaroscuro published in 1952, including publishing contracts; photocopies of writings by Augustus John; publishing agreements and book reviews of the biography. Also included are exhibition addresses on the artist by Michael Holroyd; scripts written about him and Gwen John by others, papers relating to the book co-written by Michael Holroyd and Malcolm Easton, The art of Augustus John (London, 1974), together with some research papers relating to Gwen John and to other projects.

Letters to Scott Macfie

The file comprises photocopies of letters, [1907]-1912, from Augustus John to Scott Macfie, secretary and editor of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society, and from the latter to the artist, [1910]-[1912], together with a photocopy of Augustus John's article 'Russian gypsies at Marseilles and Milan' and 'The songs of Fabian de Castro, El Gypatano', Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society. Also included are extracts of a letter, 1914, from Augustus John to Scott Macfie.

Letters to Sara John

The file comprises transcripts of extracts from letters written by Augustus John to his granddaughter Sara John, [1959]-1961, discussing his painting of her. The original letters were purchased by NLW in January 2004 (NLW MS 23922D, ff. 12-25).
