Geraint Goodwin letters

Papers relating to correspondence between Geraint Goodwin and Edward Garnett, published in The Anglo-Welsh Review, vol. 22, no 49. The file mainly comprises correspondence, 1969-1970 and 1972-1973, mostly between Roland Mathias and Rhoda Goodwin, widow of Geraint Goodwin. The file also contains photocopies of letters from Edward Garnett to Geraint Goodwin, 1935-1937; George Moore, 1928-1929; Charles Morgan, 1929-1930 and 1935.

A ride through the wood

The file mainly comprises typescript drafts, [1977]-1985, of some of the articles which appeared in A ride through the wood : essays on Anglo-Welsh literature, (Bridgend, 1985), including essays on David Jones, Alun Lewis, and Emyr Humphreys. Also included is a reprint of the article 'David Jones - towards the 'holy diversities'' from Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion (1981); and a printed copy of the Annual Gwyn Jones lecture, The lonely editor: a glance at Anglo-Welsh magazines (Cardiff, 1984).

Dannie Abse

Typescript copy, [1970], of the entry for Dannie Abse in Contemporary poets, ed. R. Murphy and J. Vinson (London, 1970), together with additional notes, [1979x1990], which appear to have been compiled for a subsequent edition.

T. Harri Jones

Three copies of a script, [1972-1973], for a television programme about T. Harri Jones, which appears to have been written, and possibly presented, by Roland Mathias. Also included are typescript copies of poems by T. Harri Jones, 1973; and a cutting of a review by Roland Mathias, 1977, of The collected poems of T. Harri Jones.

Talks and lectures

Papers relating to talks and lectures by Roland Mathias, [1943]-1982 (with gaps), a number of which discuss Anglo-Welsh literature and writers. Also included is a typescript copy of poems for a poetry reading at the Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre, 1968, which include 'Absalom in the Tree' and 'Indictment' by Roland Mathias; and copies of the radio talk by him entitled 'The Best of the Anglo-Welsh?', 1963.

Honorary degree

Papers relating to the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa awarded to Roland Mathias by the University of Georgetown, 1985. Also included is a leaflet regarding Georgetown University Alumni College, 1987.

Evan Mathias

Manuscript notes of Welsh exercises, 1942, by Roland Mathias corrected by his father. Also included is a notebook containing sermons by the Rev. Evan Mathias, [1930x1960]; and manuscript and typescript notes by him, 1960, together with research papers, concerning the history of New Inn Congregational Chapel, Monmouthshire.

Includes telegrams and cards regarding the wedding of Roland and Molly Mathias. A printed article, 'To Conscientious Objectors imprisoned for refusing medical examination', is also enclosed.

Includes letters from the Central Board for Conscientious Objectors (4); Michael Gardner; and Glyn Jones (2). One letter contains cuttings about Caradoc Evans following his death, and some relate to applications made by Roland Mathias for teaching posts.
