Pug research notes (George Featherstone),

Several exercise books and files of research notes on the pug, mainly extracted from published sources, 1950-1965, and relevant letters, 1951-1966, covering the history of the breed, its characteristics, pedigrees, breeding, care, showing, pug anecdotes, illustrations, models and administration of the Pug Club. One item of interest is a typescript copy of Louis Wain 's Puppy Dogs' Tales (published 1895). Much of the material in the file appears to have belonged to G. Featherstone.

The file includes an early book prospectus [c. 1837]; early journal articles, 1856-1902, including, by Charles Dickens, 'The Renowned Dog Caesar' in All the Year Round, 9 May 1863; and more recent notes, pedigrees, advertisements, letters and cuttings, 1932-1978, featuring canine anecdotes, breed characteristics, exports, working dogs, sport, shows, famous dogs, canine literature, illustrations and cats.

The file comprises a stud book of the Pytchley Hounds, listing the names of hounds with their parentage, 1846-1889, and hounds in kennel, 1894.

Newspaper and magazine articles,

The series comprises whole issues, individual pages, scrap books and loose cuttings of newspapers and magazines, 1816-1993, covering the biology of breeding, breed types, care, welfare, training, dog-loving celebrities, showing, clubs, animal photography, dogs and the law, working dogs, terriers, spaniels, anecdotes and a few, non-canine topics.

Australian papers,

The group comprises papers accumulated during and subsequent to Hubbard's five year stay in Australia, including order books, 1953-1956 and staff journals, 1957-1958, of the government printing office for which he worked, and notes, printed leaflets, and press cuttings, 1953-1956, relating to aspects of Australian culture.

The file includes letters from Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald, 1949-1950, and a description of a tame dingo (K. Woods), 1949.

The series comprises work-related letters from publishers, organisations, breeders and private individuals, already filed by Hubbard under subject, and mostly with original headings. The subjects include advertisment, publicity and distribution of the Dog Lover's Library via literature, the media, dog show stands and a travelling van, 1957-1959; proposals for a pocket book of dogs and for further publications relating to specific breeds, 1951-1960; book orders, 1950-1987; dog purchases, 1958-1959; identification and valuation of paintings in Hubbard's possession, 1957; and breed characteristics of Welsh Beagles, 1949.
