‘Lizzie the lifeboat’,

Two complete sets of typescript manuscripts of children’s stories; one original and one proof copy. Also included are the proof cover and inside illustrations for ‘Lizzie the lifeboat’, and correspondence with the publishers and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, July 1984-February 1985. This was the last book by Dora Thatcher as she died in July 1985. All the royalties for the book along with the copyright were donated to the R.N.L.I.

‘Miniature gardens’,

Correspondence and two typescript copies, with slight differences, of a factual article, and an extract from the issue of ‘Pembrokeshire Federation of Women’s Institutes – Produce Guild Bulletin’ (March 1956) in which it was published.

‘Miss Agatha Cherry’,

Correspondence and a typescript copy relating to a children’s story submitted to Brockhampton Press 9 July 1968 with no success, and also submitted unsuccessfully to BBC Schools in June 1970.

‘Savoury justice’,

Correspondence (1950-1963) and a typescript copy (1949) of a story for adults about Welsh valley characters broadcast by the BBC Welsh Home Service in June 1950. Reference made in correspondence in file 31.

‘Snow White – Retold’,

Typescript copy (1957) of a story that was accepted on 2 Jan 1958 but published under the name of Violet Williams (see ‘Sunny Stories correspondence 14 March 1958, file 99). The story was also published in ‘Sunny Stories’, 7 April 1958 and the ‘Fishguard County Echo’ in October 1958.

‘The Azalea tree’,

Typescript copy of a 1950’s romantic fiction story for adults submitted to ‘Women’s Own’ and Amalgamated Press, but not accepted.

‘The Bards’,

Correspondence and a typescript copy of a humorous Welsh story for adults that was submitted to the BBC but not accepted.

‘The contented scarecrow’,

Two typescript copies of a story about Raggety the scarecrow, the original has many corrections; an extract from Sunny Stories, and correspondence. The story was sent to Collins Feb 1956 but was not accepted, rewritten and accepted by Sunny Stories; also included is an extract from ‘Sunny Stories’, 1 March, 1956.

‘The gipsy Princess’,

Typescript copy (1956) of a children’s story and the issue of ‘Sunny Stories’ in which it appeared (4 March 1957); the original typescript had the title ‘The princess who wanted black hair’. The story was also published in the ‘Fishguard County Echo’ (October 1960).

‘The Gold Cup’,

Correspondence and a typescript copy of a humorous sailing story for adults that was submitted to ‘Yachting World’, but not accepted.

‘The golden shoemaker’,

Correspondence (1982-1984) and a typescript copy (1974) of a children’s play, a dramatized adaption of the story of Manawydan from the ‘Mabinogion’. Originally written for a Pembrokeshire Drama Playwriting Competition (1974) and also read by ‘Made in Wales’ (1984).
