Alun Lewis letters to Christopher Cheney

One hundred and eleven letters and cards (numbered 1-90), 1936-1943, from Alun Lewis to Christopher Cheney [Professor C. R. Cheney (1906-1987)], his tutor at Manchester and a close friend. Included are explanatory notes by C. R. Cheney on some of the letters. Topics include progress with his research thesis; his writing; career prospects - hopes, fears and aspirations; books he has read; his pleasure in art; the strain of an unwelcome romantic attachment; teacher training experiences; teaching at Pengam; the army.

Alun Lewis letters to his parents

Sixty-one airgraphs, letters and cards from Alun Lewis to his parents, December 1942-12 February 1944, the first written 'in transit' and the rest sent from India. The letters were arranged in chronological order and numbered 1-69 when acquired by NLW. Excerpts from letters 27, 65, 67-68 [see ff. 39-40, 82, 84-87] were published in In the Green Tree, pp. 42-43 and 57-63 passim.

Ninety-eight letters from Alun Lewis to his parents, almost all undated but written between May 1940 and December 1942, from Longmoor, Hampshire, and other Army Training Centres in England (ff. 1-121 verso) and en route to India (ff. 122-127 verso). The letters were arranged in a rough chronological order and numbered 1-96 when acquired by NLW and this order has been preserved although some letters are out of sequence.
